Becoming Like Jesus

Becoming more like Jesus is something that the Holy Spirit helps us with. The more we spend time in the presence of God, the more our character and behaviour can reflect His.

It is like when you are spending a lot of time with someone, you will slowly start speaking like them and doing what they do. It’s the same with God. As you spend time with Him, in prayer and reading the Bible the Holy Spirit will slowly guide your desires to be more like Him. This can sometimes be a slow process and sometimes a quick one. One analogy the Bible uses to describe this is ‘fruit’. In Galatians 5 you will read what is called the “Fruit of the Spirit” and it is something that we don’t need to try to make happen, instead ‘good fruit’ is a byproduct of letting God’s Spirit influence your life.

In John 15 Jesus introduces us to the idea of “Abiding in Him”, and in doing this we will bear fruit. What does it mean then to abide?? It means to remain. To stay connected. This is speaking about intimacy between God and the believer. That as we stay and remain close to Him, we will continue to become more like Him.
