Nahum 1:6-15

Nahum 1:2-15 The Message (MSG)

GOD is serious business. He won’t be trifled with. He avenges his foes. He stands up against his enemies, fierce and raging. But GOD doesn’t lose his temper. He’s powerful, but it’s a patient power. Still, no one gets by with anything. Sooner or later, everyone pays. Tornadoes and hurricanes are the wake of his passage, Storm clouds are the dust he shakes off his feet. He yells at the sea: It dries up. All the rivers run dry. The Bashan and Carmel mountains shrivel, the Lebanon orchards shrivel. Mountains quake in their roots, hills dissolve into mud flats. Earth shakes in fear of GOD. The whole world’s in a panic. Who can face such towering anger? Who can stand up to this fierce rage? His anger spills out like a river of lava, his fury shatters boulders. GOD is good, a hiding place in tough times. He recognizes and welcomes anyone looking for help, No matter how desperate the trouble. But cozy islands of escape He wipes right off the map. No one gets away from God. Why waste time conniving against GOD? He’s putting an end to all such scheming. For troublemakers, no second chances. Like a pile of dry brush, Soaked in oil, they’ll go up in flames. Nineveh’s an anthill of evil plots against GOD, A think tank for lies that seduce and betray. And GOD has something to say about all this: “Even though you’re on top of the world, With all the applause and all the votes, you’ll be mowed down flat. “I’ve afflicted you, Judah, true, but I won’t afflict you again. From now on I’m taking the yoke from your neck and splitting it up for kindling. I’m cutting you free from the ropes of your bondage.” * * * GOD’s orders on Nineveh: “You’re the end of the line. It’s all over with Nineveh. I’m gutting your temple. Your gods and goddesses go in the trash. I’m digging your grave. It’s an unmarked grave. You’re nothing—no, you’re less than nothing!” Look! Striding across the mountains— a messenger bringing the latest good news: peace! A holiday, Judah! Celebrate! Worship and recommit to God! No more worries about this enemy. This one is history. Close the books.

Nahum 1:6-15 Amplified Bible (AMP)

Who can stand before His indignation [His great wrath]? And who can stand up and endure the fierceness of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire And the rocks are destroyed by Him. The LORD is good, A strength and stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows [He recognizes, cares for, and understands fully] those who take refuge and trust in Him. [Ps 1:6; Hos 13:5; John 10:14, 27] But with an overwhelming flood [of judgment through invading armies] He will make a complete destruction of its site And will pursue His enemies into darkness. ¶Whatever [plot] you [Assyrians] devise against the LORD, He will make a complete end of it; Affliction [of God’s people by the hand of Assyria] will not occur twice. Like tangled thorn branches [gathered for fuel], And like those drowned in drunkenness, The people of Nineveh are consumed [through fire] Like stubble completely withered and dry [in the day of the LORD’S wrath]. [Mal 4:1] From you [O Nineveh], One has gone forth who plotted evil against the LORD, A malevolent counselor [the king of Assyria]. [2 Kin 19:20-23; Is 10:5-7; 36:15-20] This is what the LORD says, “Though they are at full strength and many in number, Even so, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you and caused you grief [O Jerusalem], I will afflict you no longer. [2 Kin 19:35-37; John 5:14] “Now, I will break his yoke [of taxation] off you, And I will tear off your shackles.” [Is 14:25] ¶The LORD has given a command concerning you [O king of Nineveh]: “Your name will no longer be perpetuated. I will cut off the carved idols and cast images From the temple of your gods; I will prepare your grave, For you are vile and unworthy.” [Is 37:38; Ezek 32:22, 23] ¶Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news [telling of Assyria’s destruction], Who announces peace and prosperity! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; Perform your vows. For the wicked one [the king of Assyria] will never again pass through you; He is completely cut off. [Is 52:7; Rom 10:15]

Nahum 1:6-15 New Living Translation (NLT)

Who can stand before his fierce anger? Who can survive his burning fury? His rage blazes forth like fire, and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence. The LORD is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him. But he will sweep away his enemies in an overwhelming flood. He will pursue his foes into the darkness of night. Why are you scheming against the LORD? He will destroy you with one blow; he won’t need to strike twice! His enemies, tangled like thornbushes and staggering like drunks, will be burned up like dry stubble in a field. Who is this wicked counselor of yours who plots evil against the LORD? This is what the LORD says: “Though the Assyrians have many allies, they will be destroyed and disappear. O my people, I have punished you before, but I will not punish you again. Now I will break the yoke of bondage from your neck and tear off the chains of Assyrian oppression.” And this is what the LORD says concerning the Assyrians in Nineveh: “You will have no more children to carry on your name. I will destroy all the idols in the temples of your gods. I am preparing a grave for you because you are despicable!” Look! A messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is bringing a message of peace. Celebrate your festivals, O people of Judah, and fulfill all your vows, for your wicked enemies will never invade your land again. They will be completely destroyed!

Nahum 1:6-15 The Passion Translation (TPT)

Who can stand before an angry God? Who can face his fiery fury? When his wrath erupts, it pours out like lava, and boulders are broken to bits as he approaches. The goodness of YAHWEH is beyond belief! For when trouble comes, we run into his heart and hide. He always cares for those who seek refuge in him. But with an overwhelming flood, he will make a complete end of Nineveh, and darkness will overtake his enemies. Whatever evil plot you hatch against YAHWEH, he will so completely thwart that it will not rise up a second time. They will be like drunkards from their carousing— like entangled thorns, they will be consumed as dry stubble. From you, Nineveh, came one who plotted evil against YAHWEH, a wicked, worthless strategist. YAHWEH says, “Although your enemies are many and secure in their alliances, they will nonetheless be mowed down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, my people, I will not do it again. And now I will break his yoke of bondage from your neck and tear away your shackles of Assyrian oppression.” YAHWEH has decreed against you, Nineveh: “Your dynasty is over! Every idol in the temple of your gods I will destroy, your carved and engraved idols. I will dig your grave, for you are nothing to me.” What a beautiful sight to behold— the precious feet of the messenger coming over the mountains to announce good news and to proclaim peace! People of Judah, celebrate your feasts, keep your solemn promises to God, for the wicked one will never pass through you again; he is completely cut off.
