Hosea 1:2-11 The Message (MSG)
The first time GOD spoke to Hosea he said: “Find a whore and marry her. Make this whore the mother of your children. And here’s why: This whole country has become a whorehouse, unfaithful to me, GOD.” Hosea did it. He picked Gomer daughter of Diblaim. She got pregnant and gave him a son. Then GOD told him: “Name him Jezreel. It won’t be long now before I’ll make the people of Israel pay for the massacre at Jezreel. I’m calling it quits on the kingdom of Israel. Payday is coming! I’m going to chop Israel’s bows and arrows into kindling in the valley of Jezreel.” * * * Gomer got pregnant again. This time she had a daughter. GOD told Hosea: “Name this one No-Mercy. I’m fed up with Israel. I’ve run out of mercy. There’s no more forgiveness. Judah’s another story. I’ll continue having mercy on them. I’ll save them. It will be their GOD who saves them, Not their armaments and armies, not their horsepower and manpower.” * * * After Gomer had weaned No-Mercy, she got pregnant yet again and had a son. GOD said: “Name him Nobody. You’ve become nobodies to me, and I, GOD, am a nobody to you. “But down the road the population of Israel is going to explode past counting, like sand on the ocean beaches. In the very place where they were once named Nobody, they will be named God’s Somebody. Everybody in Judah and everybody in Israel will be assembled as one people. They’ll choose a single leader. There’ll be no stopping them—a great day in Jezreel!”

Now when she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son. Then said God, Call his name Lo-ammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God. Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

I, the LORD their God, will save them.” After Gomer had stopped nursing Lo-Ruhamah, she became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. The LORD said, “Name him Lo-Ammi, because you are not my people, and I am not your God. “But the number of the Israelites will become like the grains of sand of the sea, which no one can measure or count. They were called, ‘You are not my people,’ but later they will be called ‘children of the living God.’

In the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘children of the living God.’

This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the LORD and worshiping other gods.” So Hosea married Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she became pregnant and gave Hosea a son. And the LORD said, “Name the child Jezreel, for I am about to punish King Jehu’s dynasty to avenge the murders he committed at Jezreel. In fact, I will bring an end to Israel’s independence. And the LORD said, “Name him Lo-ammi—‘Not my people’—for Israel is not my people, and I am not their God. “Yet the time will come when Israel’s people will be like the sands of the seashore—too many to count! Then, at the place where they were told, ‘You are not my people,’ it will be said, ‘You are children of the living God.’

This is the beginning of what YAHWEH spoke through Hosea. YAHWEH said to me, “Go and marry an adulterous woman and have children of adultery because the people of the land are adulterers. They have forsaken me.” So I married a woman named Gomer, Diblaim’s daughter. She became pregnant and bore a son. YAHWEH said to me, “Name him Jezreel because it will not be long before I punish the dynasty of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel and then destroy the kingdom of Israel. At that time, I will smash Israel’s military power in the Valley of Jezreel.” Later, Gomer became pregnant again and gave birth to a daughter. YAHWEH said to me: “Name her No-Tender-Mercy because I will no longer have tender mercy on the nation of Israel. I will certainly not forgive them. I will, however, have compassion on the nation of Judah. “I will rescue them! I will not give them victory through their weapons and military might. It will not be their horsemen and chariots that deliver them. I, YAHWEH their God, will save them!” After Gomer weaned her daughter, No-Tender-Mercy, she became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. Then YAHWEH said to me, “Name him Not-My-People because you, Israel, are not mine anymore, and I am not yours.” Yet someday, the number of the people of Israel will become as innumerable as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted. Although God named them Not-My-People, he will restore them and call them Children of the Living God.
