The Destruction of the Temple Predicted
1 And as#*Here “as” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“was going out”) he was going out of the temple courts,#*Here “courts” is supplied to distinguish this area from the interior of the temple building itself one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look! What great stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here on another stone that will not be thrown down!”
Signs of the End of the Age
3And as#*Here “as” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“was sitting”) he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4“Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5So Jesus began to say to them, “Watch out that no one deceives you! 6Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and they will deceive many. 7And when you hear about wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must happen, but the end is not yet. 8For nation will rise up against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places. There will be famines. These things are the beginning of birth pains.
Persecution of Disciples Predicted
9“But you, watch out for yourselves! They will hand you over to councils and you will be beaten in the synagogues and will have to stand before governors and kings because of me, for a witness to them. 10And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all the nations.#Or “Gentiles”; the same Greek word can be translated “nations” or “Gentiles” depending on the context 11And when they arrest you and#*Here “and” is supplied because the participle (“hand you over”) has been translated as a finite verb in keeping with English style hand you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you should say, but whatever is given to you at that hour, say this. For you are not the ones who are speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12And brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his#*The word “his” is not in the Greek text but is implied child, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 13And you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end—this one will be saved.
The Abomination of Desolation
14“But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be” (let the one who reads understand), “then those in Judea must flee to the mountains! 15The one#Some manuscripts have “And the one” who is on his#Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun housetop must not come down or go inside to take anything out of his house, 16and the one who is in the field must not turn back to pick up his cloak. 17And woe to those who are pregnant#Literally “who have in the womb” and to those who are nursing their babies#*The words “their babies” are not in the Greek text but are supplied as a necessary clarification in those days! 18But pray that it will not happen in winter. 19For in those days there will be tribulation of such a kind as has not happened from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will happen. 20And if the Lord had not shortened the days, no human being would be saved.#Literally “every flesh would not be saved” But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he has shortened the days.
21“And at that time if anyone should say to you, “Behold, here is the Christ,’ ‘Behold, there he is,’ do not believe him!#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation 22For false messiahs and false prophets will appear, and will produce signs and wonders in order to mislead, if possible, the elect. 23But you, watch out! I have told you everything ahead of time!
The Arrival of the Son of Man
24“But in those days, after that tribulation,
‘the sun will be darkened
and the moon will not give its light,
25and the stars will be falling from heaven,
and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.’#A quotation from Isa 13:10; 34:4

The Unknown Day and Hour
32“But concerning that day or hour no one knows—not even the angels in heaven nor the Son—except the Father. 33Watch out! Be alert, because you do not know when the time is! 34It is like a man away on a journey, who left his house and gave his slaves authority—to each one his work—and to the doorkeeper he gave orders that he should be on the alert. 35Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or early in the morning—36lest he arrive suddenly and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“arrive”) has been translated as a finite verb find you sleeping. 37And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be on the alert!”

Mark 13
13
1As Jesus was leaving the Temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look at these massive stones and magnificent buildings!”#13:1. Literally, “what sort of stones and what sort of buildings.”
2“You see all these great buildings?” Jesus replied. “Not one stone will be left on top of another. Everything will be torn down.”
3As Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives overlooking the Temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him in private, 4“Tell us: When this will happen? What's the sign that all this is about to be fulfilled?”#13:4. Because the disciples' question merges the two events, Jesus' answer combines aspects of the destruction of the Temple and the final end-time.
5Jesus began telling them, “Make sure no one deceives you. 6Many will come in my name claiming, ‘I am the Christ.’ They will deceive many people. 7Don't be troubled when you hear of wars nearby and wars far away. These things must happen but this is not the end. 8Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines too. These are the beginnings of the world's birth pains.
9Watch out for yourselves! They will hand you over to the courts to be tried. You will be beaten in synagogues. Because of me you will have to stand before governors and kings, and you will be witnesses to them.
10The good news must first be announced in every nation. 11When they come to arrest you and put you on trial, don't worry about what to say. Just say what you're told at that time, because it's not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
12Brother will betray brother to death, and a father will betray his child. Children will turn against their parents and have them condemned to death. 13You will be hated by everyone because of me, but whoever endures until the end will be saved.
14But when you see the ‘idolatry that causes devastation’#13:14. Or “the idolatry that causes desolation.” See Daniel 9:27, Daniel 11:31, and Daniel 12:11. standing where it shouldn't be (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea should run to the mountains. 15Those who are on the roof—don't go back inside the house to get anything. 16Those who are out in the fields—don't go home to get a coat. 17How hard it will be for those who are pregnant or nursing at that time! 18Pray that this won't happen during the winter. 19For these will be days of trouble like never before since the beginning of God's creation until now, and they won't ever come again. 20If God doesn't cut short these days, no one will survive. However, for the sake of those God has chosen, he has cut them short.
21So if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘Look, there he is,’ don't believe it. 22For false Messiahs and false prophets will appear, and they will perform miraculous signs and wonders to deceive the chosen of God, if that were possible. 23Watch out! I've told you everything before it happens.
24This is what will happen after those troubles: ‘The sun will become dark, the moon won't shine, 25the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.’#13:25. See Isaiah 13:10.
26Then they will see the Son of man as he comes on the clouds, possessing great power and glory.#13:26. See Daniel 7:13-14. 27He will send out the angels, and gather together all his chosen ones from wherever they are,#13:27. Literally, “from the four winds.” from the most distant part of the earth to the farthest point of heaven.
28Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches grow soft and send out leaves, you know that summer is near. 29In the same way, when you see these things happening, you know that it's near—right outside the door! 30I tell you the truth, this generation won't come to an end until all these things have happened. 31Heaven and earth will come to an end, but my teachings will not.
32No one knows the day or hour when this will happen—not even the angels in heaven, not even the Son; only the Father knows. 33Keep watch! Stay awake! For you don't know when this will happen. 34It's like a man who went away on a journey. He left his house, and gave each of his servants the authority to do what he told them. He told the doorkeeper to stay awake.
35So keep watch, because you don't know when the owner of the house is coming back. It may be in the evening, in the middle of the night, before dawn, or in the morning. 36You don't want to be caught sleeping if he returns unexpectedly. 37What I'm telling you, I'm telling everyone: Watch!”
