Prophecies against the Philistines
1This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet about the Philistines # Jr 25:20 before Pharaoh defeated Gaza. # Am 1:6-7; Zph 2:4 2This is what the Lord says:
Look, waters are rising from the north # Jr 1:13; 4:6,20; 6:1; 50:3,9,41; 51:48
and becoming an overflowing wadi.
They will overflow the land and everything in it, # Is 8:7-8
the cities and their inhabitants.
The people will cry out,
and every inhabitant of the land will wail.
3At the sound of the stomping hooves of his stallions, # Jdg 5:22; Jr 8:16; 50:11
the rumbling of his chariots,
and the clatter of their wheels, # Nah 3:2-3
fathers will not turn back for their sons,
because they will be utterly helpless # Lit because of laziness of hands
4on account of the day that is coming
to destroy all the Philistines,
to cut off from Tyre and Sidon
every remaining ally. # Jr 25:22; Jl 3:4; Am 1:8-10
Indeed, the Lord is about to destroy the Philistines,
the remnant of the islands of Caphtor. # Probably Crete # Gn 10:14; Am 9:7
5Baldness # Jr 48:37 is coming to Gaza.
Ashkelon will become silent, # Jdg 1:18; Jr 25:20
a remnant of their valley.
How long will you gash yourself?
6Oh, sword of the Lord! # Ezk 21:3-5
How long will you be restless?
Go back to your sheath;
be still; be silent!
7How can it # LXX, Vg; MT reads you rest
when the Lord has given it a command? # Ezk 14:17
He has assigned it # Mc 6:9
against Ashkelon and the shore of the sea.

Judgment on Philistia
1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet #Is. 14:29–31; Ezek. 25:15–17; Zeph. 2:4, 5; Zech. 9:6against the Philistines, #Amos 1:6before Pharaoh attacked Gaza.
2Thus says the Lord:
“Behold, #Is. 8:7, 8; Jer. 46:7, 8waters rise #Jer. 1:14out of the north,
And shall be an overflowing flood;
They shall overflow the land and all that is in it,
The city and those who dwell within;
Then the men shall cry,
And all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.
3At the #Judg. 5:22; Jer. 8:16; Nah. 3:2noise of the stamping hooves of his strong horses,
At the rushing of his chariots,
At the rumbling of his wheels,
The fathers will not look back for their children,
Lacking courage,
4Because of the day that comes to plunder all the #Is. 14:29–31Philistines,
To cut off from #Is. 23:1–18; Jer. 25:22; Ezek. 26:1–21; 28:20–24; Amos 1:9, 10; Zech. 9:2–4Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains;
For the Lord shall plunder the Philistines,
#Ezek. 25:16; Amos 1:8The remnant of the country of #Gen. 10:14; Deut. 2:23; Amos 9:7Caphtor.
5#Jer. 48:37; Mic. 1:16; Zeph. 2:4Baldness has come upon Gaza,
#Judg. 1:18; Jer. 25:20; Amos 1:7, 8; Zech. 9:5Ashkelon is cut off
With the remnant of their valley.
How long will you cut yourself?
6“O you #Deut. 32:41; Judg. 7:20; Jer. 12:12; Ezek. 21:3–5sword of the Lord,
How long until you are quiet?
Put yourself up into your scabbard,
Rest and be still!
7How can it be quiet,
Seeing the Lord has #Is. 10:6; Ezek. 14:17given it a charge
Against Ashkelon and against the seashore?
There He has #Mic. 6:9appointed it.”
