Prophecies Against the Nations
1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet about the nations: # Jr 25:15-38
Prophecies against Egypt
2About Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco, Egypt’s king, # 2Kg 23:29 which was defeated at Carchemish # 2Ch 35:20 on the Euphrates River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim son of Josiah: # Jr 45:1
3Deploy small shields # Jr 49:14; Ob 1 and large;
draw near for battle!
4Harness the horses;
mount the steeds; # Or mount up, riders
take your positions with helmets on!
Polish the lances;
put on armor! # Jb 41:13; Jr 51:3
5Why have I seen this?
They are terrified,
they are retreating,
their warriors are crushed,
they flee headlong,
they never look back,
terror is on every side! # Jr 6:25; 20:3-4,10; 49:29
This is the Lord’s declaration.
6The swift cannot flee,
and the warrior cannot escape! # Am 2:14
In the north by the bank of the Euphrates River,
they stumble and fall. # Dn 11:19
7Who is this, rising like the Nile, # Jr 47:2
like rivers whose waters churn?
8Egypt rises like the Nile, # Am 8:8
and its waters churn like rivers.
He boasts, “I will go up, I will cover the earth;
I will destroy cities with their residents.”
9Rise up, you cavalry!
Race furiously, you chariots!
Let the warriors go out —
Cush and Put, # Gn 10:6; Ezk 30:5
who are able to handle shields,
and the Ludim, # Gn 10:13; 1Ch 1:11
who are able to handle and string the bow. # Is 66:19
10That day belongs to the Lord, the God of Hosts,
a day of vengeance to avenge Himself
against His adversaries.
The sword will devour and be satisfied;
it will drink its fill of their blood,
because it will be a sacrifice # Is 34:5-8; Ezk 39:17-20; Zph 1:7 to the Lord, the God of Hosts,
in the northern land by the Euphrates River. # Zph 1:7
11Go up to Gilead and get balm, # Gn 37:25; Jr 8:22; 51:8
Virgin Daughter Egypt!
You have multiplied remedies in vain;
there is no healing for you.
12The nations have heard of your dishonor, # Jr 13:26; Hs 4:7; Nah 3:5
and your outcry fills the earth,
because warrior stumbles against warrior
and together both of them have fallen.
13This is the word the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to defeat the land of Egypt: # Jr 43:8-13
14Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol! # Jr 2:16; 43:7-9; 44:1
Proclaim it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes!
Say: Take positions! Prepare yourself,
for the sword devours all around you. # Jr 46:10
15Why have your strong ones been swept away?
Each has not stood,
for the Lord has thrust him down.
16He continues to stumble. # Lv 26:36-37
Indeed, each falls over the other.
They say, “Get up! Let’s return to our people
and to the land of our birth,
away from the sword that oppresses.” # Jr 50:16
17There they will cry out,
“Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise;
he let the opportune moment pass.”
18As I live —
this is the King’s declaration;
Yahweh of Hosts is His name. # Jr 48:15; 51:57
He will come like Tabor among the mountains
and like Carmel by the sea.
19Get your bags ready for exile,
inhabitant of Daughter Egypt! # Jr 48:18
For Memphis will become a desolation,
uninhabited ruins.
20Egypt is a beautiful young cow, # Hs 10:11
but a horsefly from the north is coming against her. # Some Hb mss, LXX, Syr; other Hb mss read is coming, coming # Jr 1:13-14
21Even her mercenaries among her
are like stall-fed calves.
They too will turn back;
together they will flee;
they will not take their stand,
for the day of their calamity is coming on them,
the time of their punishment. # Jr 50:27,31
22Egypt will hiss like a slithering snake, # Lit Her sound, she will go like a snake
for the enemy will come with an army;
with axes they will come against her
like those who cut trees. # Ps 74:5
23They will cut down her forest —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
though it is dense,
for they are more numerous than locusts;
they cannot be counted. # Jdg 6:5; 7:12
24Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,
handed over to a northern people. # Jr 1:15
25The Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to punish Amon, god of Thebes, # Ezk 30:14-16 along with Pharaoh, Egypt, her gods, and her kings — Pharaoh and those trusting in him. 26I will hand them over to those who want to take their lives # Jr 44:30; Ezk 32:11 — to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. But after this, # Ezk 29:8-14 it will be inhabited again as in ancient times.”
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Reassurance for Israel
27But you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid, # Is 41:8; 44:2; 45:4
and do not be discouraged, Israel,
for without fail I will save you from far away
and your descendants, from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
with no one to frighten him.
28And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
for I will be with you. # Jr 1:8,19; 30:11; 42:11
I will bring destruction on all the nations
where I have banished you,
but I will not bring destruction on you.
I will discipline you with justice,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished. # Jr 30:10-11

Judgment on Egypt
1The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against #Jer. 25:15the nations. 2Against #Jer. 25:17–19; Ezek. 29:2—32:32Egypt.
#2 Kin. 23:33–35Concerning the army of Pharaoh Necho, king of Egypt, which was by the River Euphrates in Carchemish, and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon #2 Kin. 23:29; 24:7; 2 Chr. 35:20defeated in the #Jer. 45:1fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:
3“Order the buckler and shield,
And draw near to battle!
4Harness the horses,
And mount up, you horsemen!
Stand forth with your helmets,
Polish the spears,
#Is. 21:5; Jer. 51:11, 12; Joel 3:9; Nah. 2:1; 3:14Put on the armor!
5Why have I seen them dismayed and turned back?
Their mighty ones are beaten down;
They have speedily fled,
And did not look back,
For #Jer. 49:29fear was all around,” says the Lord.
6“Do not let the swift flee away,
Nor the mighty man escape;
They will #Jer. 46:12, 16; Dan. 11:19stumble and fall
Toward the north, by the River Euphrates.
7“Who is this coming up #Is. 8:7, 8; Jer. 47:2; Dan. 11:22like a flood,
Whose waters move like the rivers?
8Egypt rises up like a flood,
And its waters move like the rivers;
And he says, ‘I will go up and cover the earth,
I will destroy the city and its inhabitants.’
9Come up, O horses, and rage, O chariots!
And let the mighty men come forth:
The Ethiopians and the Libyans who handle the shield,
And the Lydians #Is. 66:19who handle and bend the bow.
10For this is #Is. 13:6; Joel 1:15the day of the Lord God of hosts,
A day of vengeance,
That He may avenge Himself on His adversaries.
#Deut. 32:42; Is. 31:8; Jer. 12:12The sword shall devour;
It shall be satiated and made drunk with their blood;
For the Lord God of hosts #Is. 34:6; Zeph. 1:7; Ezek. 39:17has a sacrifice
In the north country by the River Euphrates.
11“Go#Jer. 8:22 up to Gilead and take balm,
#Is. 47:1; Jer. 31:4, 21O virgin, the daughter of Egypt;
In vain you will use many medicines;
#Ezek. 30:21You shall not be cured.
12The nations have heard of your #Jer. 2:36; Nah. 3:8–10shame,
And your cry has filled the land;
For the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty;
They both have fallen together.”
Babylonia Will Strike Egypt
13The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon would come and #Is. 19:1; Jer. 43:10, 11; Ezek. 29:1–21strike the land of Egypt.
14“Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in #Jer. 44:1Migdol;
Proclaim in Noph and in #Ezek. 30:18Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Stand fast and prepare yourselves,
For the sword devours all around you.’
15Why are your valiant men swept away?
They did not stand
Because the Lord drove them away.
16He made many fall;
Yes, #Lev. 26:36, 37; Jer. 46:6one fell upon another.
And they said, ‘Arise!
#Jer. 51:9Let us go back to our own people
And to the land of our nativity
From the oppressing sword.’
17They cried there,
‘Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is but a noise.
He has passed by the appointed time!’
18“As I live,” says the King,
#Is. 47:4; Jer. 48:15; Mal. 1:14Whose name is the Lord of hosts,
“Surely as Tabor is among the mountains
And as Carmel by the sea, so he shall come.
19O #Jer. 48:18you daughter dwelling in Egypt,
Prepare yourself #Is. 20:4to go into captivity!
For Noph shall be waste and desolate, without inhabitant.
20“Egypt is a very pretty #Hos. 10:11heifer,
But destruction comes, it comes #Jer. 1:14from the north.
21Also her mercenaries are in her midst like fat bulls,
For they also are turned back,
They have fled away together.
They did not stand,
For #(Ps. 37:13); Jer. 50:27the day of their calamity had come upon them,
The time of their punishment.
22#(Is. 29:4)Her noise shall go like a serpent,
For they shall march with an army
And come against her with axes,
Like those who chop wood.
23“They shall #Is. 10:34cut down her forest,” says the Lord,
“Though it cannot be searched,
Because they are innumerable,
And more numerous than #Judg. 6:5; 7:12; Joel 2:25grasshoppers.
24The daughter of Egypt shall be ashamed;
She shall be delivered into the hand
Of #Jer. 1:15the people of the north.”
25The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will bring punishment on Amon of #Ezek. 30:14–16; Nah. 3:8No, and Pharaoh and Egypt, #Ex. 12:12; Jer. 43:12, 13; Ezek. 30:13; Zeph. 2:11with their gods and their kings—Pharaoh and those who #Is. 30:1–5; 31:1–3trust in him. 26#Jer. 44:30; Ezek. 32:11And I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of his servants. #Ezek. 29:8–14Afterward it shall be inhabited as in the days of old,” says the Lord.
God Will Preserve Israel
27“But#Is. 41:13, 14; 43:5; 44:2; Jer. 30:10, 11 do not fear, O My servant Jacob,
And do not be dismayed, O Israel!
For behold, I will #Is. 11:11; Jer. 23:3, 4; Mic. 7:12save you from afar,
And your offspring from the land of their captivity;
Jacob shall return, have rest and be at ease;
No one shall make him afraid.
28Do not fear, O Jacob My servant,” says the Lord,
“For I am with you;
For I will make a complete end of all the nations
To which I have driven you,
But I will not make #Jer. 10:24; Amos 9:8, 9a complete end of you.
I will rightly #Jer. 30:11correct you,
For I will not leave you wholly unpunished.”
