Social and Spiritual Corruption
1Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan # Ps 22:12; Ezk 39:18
who are on the hill of Samaria,
women who oppress the poor
and crush the needy, # Ex 23:3,6; Lv 19:15; 25:35; Dt 15:4-11; Am 5:11; 8:6
who say to their husbands,
“Bring us something to drink.” # Am 2:8; 6:6
2The Lord God has sworn # Am 6:8; 8:7 by His holiness: # Ps 89:35
Look, the days are coming # Lit coming on you
when you will be taken away with hooks, # Is 37:29; Ezk 38:4
every last one of you with fishhooks. # 2Kg 19:28; 2Ch 33:10-11
3You will go through breaches in the wall, # Jr 52:7
each woman straight ahead,
and you will be driven along toward Harmon.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
4Come to Bethel and rebel;
rebel even more at Gilgal! # Am 5:5
Bring your sacrifices every morning, # Am 5:21-22
your tenths every three days.
5Offer leavened bread as a thank offering, # Lv 7:12
and loudly proclaim your freewill offerings, # Lv 22:18-21
for that is what you Israelites love to do! # Jr 7:9-10; Hs 9:1,10
This is the Lord’s declaration.
God’s Discipline and Israel’s Apostasy
6I gave you absolutely nothing to eat # Lit you cleanness of teeth # Is 3:1; Jr 14:18
in all your cities,
a shortage of food in all your communities,
yet you did not return to Me. # Is 9:13; Jr 5:3; Hg 2:17
This is the Lord’s declaration.
7I also withheld the rain from you # Jr 3:1-3; 5:23-25
while there were still three months until harvest.
I sent rain on one city
but no rain on another. # Ex 9:4,26; 10:22-23
One field received rain
while a field with no rain withered. # Lv 26:18-19; Jl 1:10-12
8Two or three cities staggered
to another city to drink water # 1Kg 18:5; Jr 14:4
but were not satisfied, # Ezk 4:16; Hg 1:6
yet you did not return # Jr 3:7 to Me.
This is the Lord’s declaration.
9I struck you with blight and mildew; # Dt 28:22; Hg 2:17
the locust devoured # Jl 1:4; Am 7:1-2
your many gardens and vineyards,
your fig trees and olive trees, # Dt 28:38-42; Jl 1:4-7,12
yet you did not return to Me. # Jr 3:10
This is the Lord’s declaration.
10I sent plagues like those of Egypt; # Ex 11:4-5; Dt 28:27,60
I killed your young men with the sword, # Jr 11:22; 18:21; 48:15
along with your captured horses. # 2Kg 13:3,7
I caused the stench of your camp
to fill your nostrils, # Is 34:3
yet you did not return to Me. # Is 9:13
This is the Lord’s declaration.
11I overthrew some of you
as I # Lit God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, # Gn 19:24-25
and you were like a burning stick
snatched from a fire, # Zch 3:1-2
yet you did not return to Me # Is 9:13 —
this is the Lord’s declaration.
12Therefore, Israel, that is what I will do to you,
and since I will do that to you,
Israel, prepare to meet your God! # Is 32:11; 64:2; Jr 5:22
13He is here:
the One who forms the mountains, # Jb 38:4-7; Ps 65:6; Is 40:12
creates the wind, # Ps 135:7
and reveals His # Or his thoughts to man, # Ps 139:2; Dn 2:30
the One who makes the dawn out of darkness
and strides on the heights of the earth. # Mc 1:3
Yahweh, the God of Hosts, is His name. # Am 5:8-9,27; 9:5-6

Word for Worldly Women
1Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on Samaria’s hill, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their masters: “Bring, so we may drink.”
2My Lord Adonai has sworn by His holiness: “Behold, days are coming upon you when he will drag you away with meat-hooks, the last of you with fishhooks.
3You will go out through breaches— each woman straight ahead, and you will be cast to Harmon.” It is the declaration of Adonai.
4“Come to Bethel and transgress, in Gilgal multiply transgression. Every morning bring your sacrifices and your tithes every three days.
5Offer up hametz as a thank offering, call out about freewill offerings— boast about it! For so you love to do, Bnei-Yisrael.” It is the declaration of my Lord Adonai.
Yet You Have Not Returned
6“So also, I myself have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities and lack of bread in all your places— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
7“Also I myself have withheld from you the rain—when three months remain to the harvest, I caused it to rain on one city, while on another city I sent no rain; one piece of ground would get rain, while the portion not rained on would wither.
8So two or three cities go staggering to one city to drink water, but would not be satisfied— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
9“I struck you with blight and mildew. Your many gardens and vineyards, your fig-trees and olive trees the locust has devoured— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
10“I sent among you a plague in the manner of Egypt. I slew your young men by the sword, with your chariot-horses in captivity. I made the stench of your camp rise up even to your own nostrils— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
11I overthrew some of you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You became like a firebrand snatched from a blaze— yet you have not returned to Me,” declares Adonai.
Prepare to Meet Your God
12“Therefore here is what I will do to you, Israel. Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel!”
13For behold! He who forms mountains who creates the wind, who declares His thoughts to man, who makes dawn out of darkness, who walks above the heights of the earth—His Name is Adonai Elohei-Tzva’ot!
