God’s Reasons for Punishing Israel
1Listen to this message that the Lord has spoken against you, Israelites, against the entire clan that I brought from the land of Egypt: # Am 2:10
2I have known only you # Ex 19:5-6; Dt 4:32-37
out of all the clans of the earth;
therefore, I will punish you for all your iniquities. # Jr 14:10; Ezk 20:36; Dn 9:12
3Can two walk together # Lv 26:23-24
without agreeing to meet? # LXX reads without meeting
4Does a lion roar # Ps 104:21; Hs 5:14; 11:10 in the forest
when it has no prey?
Does a young lion growl from its lair
unless it has captured something?
5Does a bird land in a trap on the ground
if there is no bait for it?
Does a trap spring from the ground
when it has caught nothing?
6If a ram’s horn # Jr 4:5,19,21; 6:1; Hs 5:8; Zph 1:16 is blown in a city,
aren’t people afraid? # Nm 10:9; Jr 4:19; Jl 2:1
If a disaster # Is 14:24-27; 45:7 occurs in a city,
hasn’t the Lord done it? # Lm 3:37-39
7Indeed, the Lord God does nothing
without revealing His counsel
to His servants the prophets. # Gn 18:17; Jr 23:18,22; Jnh 1:2
8A lion has roared; # Am 1:2
who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken; # Jnh 1:1-3; 3:1-3
who will not prophesy? # Jr 6:10-11; 20:9
9Proclaim on the citadels in Ashdod # 1Sm 5:1; Am 1:8
and on the citadels in the land of Egypt:
Assemble on the mountains of Samaria # Am 4:1; 6:1
and see the great turmoil in the city
and the acts of oppression within it. # Am 5:11; 6:8
10The people are incapable of doing right # Ps 14:4; Jr 4:22; Am 5:7; 6:12 —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
those who store up violence and destruction # Hab 2:8-10; Zph 1:9; Zch 5:3-4
in their citadels.
11Therefore, the Lord God says:
An enemy # Am 6:14 will surround the land;
he will destroy # Am 2:14 your strongholds
and plunder your citadels. # 2Kg 17:5-6; 18:9-12
12The Lord says:
As the shepherd snatches two legs
or a piece of an ear
from the lion’s mouth, # 1Sm 17:34-37
so the Israelites who live in Samaria
will be rescued
with only the corner of a bed # Ps 132:3
or the # Or Israelites will be rescued, those who sit in Samaria on a corner of a bed or a cushion # Hb obscure of a couch. # LXX, Aq, Sym, Theod, Syr, Tg, Vg read or in Damascus # Est 1:6; 7:8; Am 6:4
13Listen and testify # Ezk 2:7 against the house of Jacob —
this is the declaration of the Lord God,
the God of Hosts.
14I will punish the altars of Bethel # Hs 10:5-8,14-15; Am 4:4; 5:5-6; 7:10,13
on the day I punish Israel for its crimes;
the horns of the altar # Lv 8:15; 16:18-19; 1Kg 1:50-51; 2:28; Ps 118:27 will be cut off
and fall to the ground. # Hs 10:1-2
15I will demolish the winter house # Jr 36:22
and the summer house; # Jdg 3:20
the houses inlaid with ivory # 1Kg 22:39; 2Ch 9:17; Am 6:4 will be destroyed,
and the great houses # Am 2:5; 6:11 will come to an end.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

The Prophet Reveals Destruction
1Hear this word that Adonai has spoken against you, Bnei Yisrael, against the whole family that I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying:
2“Only you have I known from among all the families of the earth. Therefore, I will punish you for all your iniquities.
3Can two walk together unless they meet by appointment?
4Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion growl from his den unless he has taken prey?
5Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground if it has no bait? Will a snare spring up from the ground without taking anything?
6If a shofar alarm sounds in a city, will people not tremble? If there is calamity in a city, has not Adonai caused it?
7For the Lord Adonai, will do nothing, unless He has revealed His counsel to His servants the prophets.
8A lion has roared, who will not fear? My Lord Adonai has spoken, who shall not prophesy?
9Proclaim on the citadels in Ashdod and the citadels in the land of Egypt: “Assemble on Samaria’s mountains: Behold the great tumult within it, even the oppression within it.”
10They do not know how to be honest, —declares Adonai— those who are saving up violence and destruction in their citadels.
11Therefore thus says my Lord Adonai: “An adversary will surround the land! He will bring down your strength. Your citadels will be plundered
12Thus says Adonai: “Just as the shepherd snatches out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so will Bnei-Yisrael dwelling in Samaria escape with the corner of a bed or a head of a couch.
13Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob.” It is the declaration of my Lord Adonai Elohei-Tzva’ot.
14“For in a day I shall punish Israel for the transgressions of Israel, and attend to the altars of Bethel— the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.
15I will also strike the winter house together with the summer house. The houses of ivory will perish, and great houses will be demolished.” It is the declaration of Adonai.
