1 John 5
5
1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Messiah has been born of God, # 1Jn 2:29 and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of Him. 2This is how we know that we love God’s children when we love God and obey # Other mss read keep His commands. 3For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. Now His commands are not a burden, # Dt 30:11; Mt 11:30; 23:4,23 4because whatever has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. 5And who is the one who conquers the world # 1Co 15:57; 2Pt 2:20 but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? # Jn 5:19; 14:1; Heb 1:2
The Certainty of God’s Testimony
6Jesus Christ — He is the One who came by water and blood, not by water only, but by water # Mk 1:11; Jn 1:34 and by blood. # Jn 17:1; 1Jn 1:7; 4:10 And the Spirit is the One who testifies, # Jn 15:26; Ac 26:5 because the Spirit is the truth. 7For there are three that testify: # Other mss (Vg and a few late Gk mss) read testify in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are One. 8 And there are three who bear witness on earth: # Dt 19:15; Mt 18:16; Jn 8:17-18 8the Spirit, # Jn 1:32; 19:30; 20:22 the water, and the blood # Jn 19:34 — and these three are in agreement. 9If we accept the testimony of men, God’s testimony # Jn 5:36-37; 8:18 is greater, because it is God’s testimony that He has given about His Son. 10(The one who believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him. The one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, # Gn 3:4 because he has not believed in the testimony God has given about His Son.) 11And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
12The one who has the Son has life. # Jn 3:15,36; 5:24; 6:40,47 The one who doesn’t have the Son of God does not have life. 13I have written these things to you who believe in the name # 1Jn 3:23 of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Effective Prayer
14Now this is the confidence we have before Him: Whenever we ask # Mt 7:7; Jn 14:13; 1Jn 3:22 anything according to His will, He hears us. # Mt 7:8; Jn 9:31; 11:22 15And if we know that He hears whatever we ask, # Jms 1:5 we know that we have what we have asked Him for. # Jn 11:22; 16:24
16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not bring death, he should ask, and God # Lit He will give life to him — to those who commit sin that doesn’t bring death. There is sin # Or is a sin that brings death. I am not saying he should pray about that. 17All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin that does not bring death.
Conclusion
18We know that everyone who has been born of God does not sin, but the One # Jesus Christ who is born of God keeps him, # Other mss read himself # Or the one who is born of God keeps himself # Jn 17:12; 1Pt 1:5; Jd 24; Rv 3:10 and the evil one does not touch him.
19We know that we are of God, and the whole world is under the sway of the evil one.
20And we know that the Son of God has come # Jn 1:14; 8:42; 1Jn 1:2; 3:5,8 and has given us understanding so that we may know the true One. # Other mss read the true God We are in the true One — that is, in His Son Jesus Christ. # Jn 10:38; 15:9; 17:21; 1Th 1:1; 1Jn 2:23-24 He is the true God and eternal life.
21Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

1 John 5
5
1Every one who is believing that Jesus is the Christ, of God he hath been begotten, and every one who is loving Him who did beget, doth love also him who is begotten of Him:
2in this we know that we love the children of God, when we may love God, and His commands may keep;
3for this is the love of God, that His commands we may keep, and His commands are not burdensome;
4because every one who is begotten of God doth overcome the world, and this is the victory that did overcome the world — our faith;
5who is he who is overcoming the world, if not he who is believing that Jesus is the Son of God?
6This one is he who did come through water and blood — Jesus the Christ, not in the water only, but in the water and the blood; and the Spirit it is that is testifying, because the Spirit is the truth,
7because three are who are testifying [in the heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these — the three — are one;
8and three are who are testifying in the earth], the Spirit, and the water, and the blood, and the three are into the one.
9If the testimony of men we receive, the testimony of God is greater, because this is the testimony of God that He hath testified concerning His Son.
10He who is believing in the Son of God, hath the testimony in himself; he who is not believing God, a liar hath made Him, because he hath not believed in the testimony that God hath testified concerning His Son;
11and this is the testimony, that life age-during did God give to us, and this — the life — is in His Son;
12he who is having the Son, hath the life; he who is not having the Son of God — the life he hath not.
13These things I did write to you who are believing in the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that life ye have age-during, and that ye may believe in the name of the Son of God.
14And this is the boldness that we have toward Him, that if anything we may ask according to his will, He doth hear us,
15and if we have known that He doth hear us, whatever we may ask, we have known that we have the requests that we have requested from Him.
16If any one may see his brother sinning a sin not unto death, he shall ask, and He shall give to him life to those sinning not unto death; there is sin to death, not concerning it do I speak that he may beseech;
17all unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not unto death.
18We have known that every one who hath been begotten of God doth not sin, but he who was begotten of God doth keep himself, and the evil one doth not touch him;
19we have known that of God we are, and the whole world in the evil doth lie;
20and we have known that the Son of God is come, and hath given us a mind, that we may know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ; this one is the true God and the life age-during!
21Little children, guard yourselves from the idols! Amen.
