1 John 4

The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error
1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits # 1Th 5:21 to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has # Or confesses Jesus to be the Christ come in the flesh # Jn 1:14; Php 2:7; 3:3 is from God. # 1Co 12:3 3But every spirit who does not confess Jesus # Other mss read confess that Jesus has come in the flesh is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist; # 1Jn 2:18,22; 2Jn 7 you have heard that he is coming, and he is already in the world now.
4You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the One who is in you # Rm 8:31; Col 1:27; 1Jn 3:20 is greater than the one who is in the world. # Jn 12:31 5They are from the world. # Jn 17:6; 2Pt 2:20 Therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them. 6We are from God. Anyone who knows God listens to us; # Jn 8:47 anyone who is not from God does not listen to us. From this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deception. # Mk 13:5-6; 1Co 2:12; 1Tm 4:1
Knowing God through Love
7Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God # 1Jn 2:29 and knows God. 8The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9God’s love was revealed among us in this way: # Or revealed in us God sent # Mk 9:37 His One and Only Son # Jn 1:14,18; 3:16,18 into the world so that we might live # Jn 10:28 through Him. 10Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us # Jn 3:16 and sent His Son to be the # Or a propitiation # 2Co 5:21; 1Jn 2:2 for our sins. 11Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another. # Jn 13:14; 15:12; Rm 13:8; 1Th 4:9; 1Pt 1:22 12No one has ever seen God. # Since God is an infinite being, no one can see Him in His absolute essential nature; Ex 33:18-23. # Ex 33:20 If we love one another, God remains in # Or remains among us and His love is perfected in us.
13This is how we know that we remain in Him # Jn 15:4-7; 1Jn 2:6,24,27-28; 3:6,24; 4:15-16 and He in us: He has given assurance to us from His Spirit. # Rv 3:22 14And we have seen and we testify that the Father has sent His Son # Rm 1:3 as the world’s Savior. 15Whoever confesses # Or acknowledges # Jn 9:22; Php 2:6 that Jesus is the Son of God — God remains in him and he in God. 16And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
17In this, love is perfected with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, # Mt 10:15; 11:22,24; 12:36; 2Pt 2:9; 3:7; Jd 6 for we are as He is in this world. # Jn 14:10-11; 15:9-10; 17:11,15,18 18There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, # Rm 8:15 because fear involves punishment. # Or fear has its own punishment or torment So the one who fears has not reached perfection in love. # Eph 4:11-16 19We love # Other mss add Him because He first loved us. # 2Th 2:13
Keeping God’s Commands
20If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, # 1Jn 2:9,11; 3:15 he is a liar. # 1Jn 1:10 For the person who does not love his brother # 1Jn 2:10; 3:10,14-17 he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen. # Other mss read has seen, how is he able to love . . . seen? (as a question) 21And we have this command from Him: The one who loves God must also love his brother.

1 John 4
4
1Beloved, every spirit believe not, but prove the spirits, if of God they are, because many false prophets have gone forth to the world;
2in this know ye the Spirit of God; every spirit that doth confess Jesus Christ in the flesh having come, of God it is,
3and every spirit that doth not confess Jesus Christ in the flesh having come, of God it is not; and this is that of the antichrist, which ye heard that it doth come, and now in the world it is already.
4Ye — of God ye are, little children, and ye have overcome them; because greater is He who [is] in you, than he who is in the world.
5They — of the world they are; because of this from the world they speak, and the world doth hear them;
6we — of God we are; he who is knowing God doth hear us; he who is not of God, doth not hear us; from this we know the spirit of the truth, and the spirit of the error.
7Beloved, may we love one another, because the love is of God, and every one who is loving, of God he hath been begotten, and doth know God;
8he who is not loving did not know God, because God is love.
9In this was manifested the love of God in us, because His Son — the only begotten — hath God sent to the world, that we may live through him;
10in this is the love, not that we loved God, but that He did love us, and did send His Son a propitiation for our sins.
11Beloved, if thus did God love us, we also ought one another to love;
12God no one hath ever seen; if we may love one another, God in us doth remain, and His love is having been perfected in us;
13in this we know that in Him we do remain, and He in us, because of His Spirit He hath given us.
14And we — we have seen and do testify, that the Father hath sent the Son — Saviour of the world;
15whoever may confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God in him doth remain, and he in God;
16and we — we have known and believed the love, that God hath in us; God is love, and he who is remaining in the love, in God he doth remain, and God in him.
17In this made perfect hath been the love with us, that boldness we may have in the day of the judgment, because even as He is, we — we also are in this world;
18fear is not in the love, but the perfect love doth cast out the fear, because the fear hath punishment, and he who is fearing hath not been made perfect in the love;
19we — we love him, because He — He first loved us;
20if any one may say — ‘I love God,’ and his brother he may hate, a liar he is; for he who is not loving his brother whom he hath seen, God — whom he hath not seen — how is he able to love?
21and this [is] the command we have from Him, that he who is loving God, may also love his brother.
