Psalms 76
76
Psalm 76
For the choir director; on stringed instruments; a psalm by Asaph; a song.
1God is known in Judah.
His name is great in Israel.
2His tent is in Salem.
His home is in Zion.
3There he destroyed flaming arrows,
shields, swords, and weapons of war. Selah
4You are the radiant one.
You are more majestic than the ancient mountains.#76:4 Greek, Syriac; Masoretic Text “mountains of prey.”
5Brave people were robbed.
They died.
None of the warriors were able to lift a hand.
6At your stern warning, O God of Jacob,
chariot riders and horses were put to sleep.
7You alone must be feared!
Who can stand in your presence when you become angry?
8From heaven you announced a verdict.
The earth was fearful and silent
9when you rose to judge, O God,
when you rose to save every oppressed person on earth. Selah
10Even angry mortals will praise you.
You will wear the remainder of ⌞their⌟ anger.
11Make vows to the Lord your God, and keep them.
Let everyone around him bring gifts to the one who must be feared.
12He cuts short the lives of influential people.
He terrifies the kings of the earth.

Psalms 76
76
For the music director. To be accompanied by stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.
1God is famous in Judah; his reputation is great throughout Israel.
2He lives in Jerusalem; his home is in Zion.
3There he broke the flaming arrows, the shields, the swords, and the weapons of war. Selah.
4You shine with light; you are more majestic than the everlasting#76:4. Septuagint reading. Hebrew has “mountains of prey.” mountains.
5Our most courageous enemies have been plundered. They sleep the sleep of death. Even the strongest of them could not raise a hand against us.
6At your command, God of Jacob, both horse and rider fell down dead.
7You are terrifying—who can stand before you when you are angry?
8From heaven you announced judgment. Everyone on earth was afraid and stood still,
9when you stood up to judge, to save the oppressed people of the earth. Selah.
10Even human anger against you makes you look glorious, for you wear it alike a crown.#76:10. The Hebrew text is unclear. The interpretation followed here is that human hostility to God ends up showing what he is truly like in the way that he deals with it.
11Make your promises to God and be sure to keep them. Everyone bring gifts to the awe-inspiring one.
12For he humbles proud leaders; he terrifies the kings of the earth.
