Traditions and Commandments
1 # For ver. 1-20, see Mark 7:1-23 Then Pharisees and #Mark 3:22scribes came to Jesus #Mark 3:22from Jerusalem and said, 2#[ch. 9:11] “Why do your disciples break #Gal. 1:14; Col. 2:8 the tradition of the elders? #Luke 11:38For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4For God commanded, #Cited from Ex. 20:12 ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, #Cited from Ex. 21:17‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”#15:5 Or is an offering 6he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have #Gal. 3:17 (Gk.); [Rom. 2:23]made void the word#15:6 Some manuscripts law of God. 7#ch. 23:13You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
8 # Cited from Isa. 29:13; [Ezek. 33:31] “‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
9 in vain do they worship me,
teaching as # Col. 2:22; Titus 1:14 doctrines the commandments of men.’”
What Defiles a Person
10And he called the people to him and said to them, #ch. 13:51“Hear and understand: 11#See Acts 10:14, 15it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” 12Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were #[ch. 13:57; Luke 7:23]offended when they heard this saying?” 13He answered, #[Isa. 60:21; 61:3; John 15:1, 2; 1 Cor. 3:9] “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted #Jude 12will be rooted up. 14Let them alone; #ch. 23:16, 24; [Isa. 56:10; Mal. 2:8] they are blind guides.#15:14 Some manuscripts add of the blind And #Luke 6:39if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 15But Peter said to him, #[ch. 13:36]“Explain the parable to us.” 16And he said, #ch. 16:9“Are you also still without understanding? 17Do you not see that #[1 Cor. 6:13]whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?#15:17 Greek is expelled into the latrine 18But #ch. 12:34; James 3:6what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19For out of the heart come #James 2:4 evil thoughts, #ch. 5:22, 28; See Ex. 20:13-16 murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, #Eph. 4:31; Col. 3:8; 1 Tim. 6:4slander. 20#1 Cor. 6:9, 10 These are what defile a person. But #Mark 7:2, 5to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”
The Faith of a Canaanite Woman
21 # For ver. 21-28, see Mark 7:24-30 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22And behold, #Gen. 10:15, 19; Judg. 1:30-33 a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, #See ch. 9:27“Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 23But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, #[ch. 14:15]“Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 24He answered, #Rom. 15:8; See ch. 10:5, 6“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25But she came and #See ch. 8:2knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and #ch. 7:6throw it to the dogs.” 27She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat #[Luke 16:21]the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, #See ch. 9:2 great is your faith! #[ch. 8:13] Be it done for you as you desire.” #ch. 9:22; 17:18; [John 4:52, 53]And her daughter was #[ch. 8:13] healed instantly.#15:28 Greek from that hour
Jesus Heals Many
29 # For ver. 29-31, [Mark 7:31-37] Jesus went on from there and walked #ch. 4:18; John 6:1 beside the Sea of Galilee. Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand
32 # For ver. 32-39, see Mark 8:1-10; [ch. 14:14-21] Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, #[ch. 9:36]“I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” 34And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, #ch. 16:10“Seven, and a few small fish.” 35And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and #ch. 26:27; Mark 14:23; Luke 22:17, 19; John 6:11, 23; Acts 27:35; Rom. 14:6; 1 Cor. 10:30; 11:24; 14:16; 1 Tim. 4:3, 4having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37And #[2 Kgs. 4:42-44]they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 38Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of #[Mark 8:10]Magadan.
