Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre
1The word of the Lord came to me: 2#See ch. 2:1 “Son of man, say to #[ver. 12] the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:
# [Rev. 18:7] “Because your heart is proud,
and #[ver. 9] you have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
in the heart of the seas,’
yet #Isa. 31:3 you are but a man, and no god,
# ver. 6 though you make your heart like the heart of a god—
3 # [ver. 12; Zech. 9:2] you are indeed wiser #Dan. 1:17 than #ch. 14:14Daniel;
no secret is hidden from you;
4by your wisdom and your understanding
# [Zech. 9:3] you have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries;
5by your great wisdom in your trade
you have increased your wealth,
and #[See ver. 2 above]your heart has become proud in your wealth—
6therefore thus says the Lord God:
# ver. 2 Because you make your heart
like the heart of a god,
7therefore, behold, I will bring #ver. 10; ch. 7:21; 30:12; 31:12 foreigners upon you,
the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against #[ver. 17]the beauty of your wisdom
and defile #[ver. 17]your splendor.
8 # [ch. 32:18, 19] They shall thrust you down into the pit,
# [ch. 32:20] and you shall die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9 # [ver. 2] Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’
in the presence of those who kill you,
though #[See ver. 2 above]you are but a man, and no god,
in the hands of those who slay you?
10 # ch. 31:18; 32:19, 21, 24, 25 You shall die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hand of foreigners;
# See ch. 17:24 for I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”
A Lament over the King of Tyre
11Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12#See ch. 2:1 “Son of man, #See ch. 19:1 raise a lamentation over #[ver. 2] the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:
“You were the signet of perfection,#28:12 The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain
# [ver. 3] full of wisdom and #ch. 27:3perfect in beauty.
13You were in #ch. 31:8, 9; See Isa. 51:3 Eden, the garden of God;
# [ch. 27:16] every precious stone was your covering,
#
Rev. 4:3; 21:19, 20 sardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,#28:13 Or lapis lazuli #[ch. 27:16] emerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.#28:13 The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain
# ver. 15 On the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14You were an anointed #Ex. 25:20; 1 Kgs. 8:7 guardian cherub.
I placed you;#28:14 The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain you were on #[ch. 20:40]the holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15You were blameless in your ways
# ver. 13 from the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16In the abundance of #[ver. 5] your trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from #[See ver. 14 above] the mountain of God,
and I destroyed you,#28:16 Or banished you #[See ver. 14 above]O guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 # ver. 2, 5 Your heart was proud because of #[ver. 7]your beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so #[ch. 30:8, 14, 16; Rev. 18:8] I brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
# [ver. 17] in the sight of all who saw you.
19All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
# ch. 26:21; 27:36 you have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”
Prophecy Against Sidon
20The word of the Lord came to me: 21#See ch. 2:1 “Son of man, #See ch. 6:2 set your face toward #See Isa. 23:2Sidon, and #See ch. 6:2 prophesy against her 22and say, Thus says the Lord God:
“Behold, #See ch. 13:8 I am against you, O Sidon,
and #ch. 39:13; [Ex. 14:4, 17, 18] I will manifest my glory in your midst.
And #See ch. 6:7 they shall know that I am the Lord
# ver. 26 when I execute judgments in her
and #See ch. 20:41manifest my holiness in her;
23for I will send #ch. 38:22pestilence into her,
and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.
24“And for the house of Israel #Num. 33:55; Josh. 23:13 there shall be no more a brier to prick or #[2 Cor. 12:7] a thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors #ch. 16:57who have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.
Israel Gathered in Security
25“Thus says the Lord God: #See ch. 11:17 When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and #[See ver. 22 above] manifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, #ch. 36:28; 37:25then they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. 26#Jer. 23:6; 32:37 And they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, #ver. 22 when I execute judgments upon all their neighbors #[See ver. 24 above] who have treated them with contempt. #[See ver. 22 above]Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”
