Exodus 9

The Fifth Plague: Egyptian Livestock Die
1Then the Lord said to Moses, #ch. 8:1, 2“Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says #See ch. 7:16the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 2For if you refuse to let them go and still hold them, 3behold, #ch. 7:4the hand of the Lord will fall with a very severe plague upon your livestock that are in the field, the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the herds, and the flocks. 4#ch. 8:22; 11:7But the Lord will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing of all that belongs to the people of Israel shall die.”’” 5And the Lord set a time, saying, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this thing in the land.” 6And the next day the Lord did this thing. #[ver. 19]All the livestock of the Egyptians died, but not one of the livestock of the people of Israel died. 7And Pharaoh sent, and behold, not one of the livestock of Israel was dead. But #ch. 7:14the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.
The Sixth Plague: Boils
8And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from the kiln, and let Moses throw them in the air in the sight of Pharaoh. 9It shall become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and become #Lev. 13:18; Deut. 28:27; 2 Kgs. 20:7; Job 2:7; Isa. 38:21; Rev. 16:2boils breaking out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.” 10So they took soot from the kiln and stood before Pharaoh. And Moses threw it in the air, and it became boils breaking out in sores on man and beast. 11And #See ch. 7:11; 2 Tim. 3:9the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils came upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians. 12#See ch. 4:21But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not listen to them, as #ch. 4:21the Lord had spoken to Moses.
The Seventh Plague: Hail
13Then the Lord said to Moses, #ch. 7:15; 8:20“Rise up early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 14For this time I will send all my plagues on you yourself,#9:14 Hebrew on your heart and on your servants and your people, so #ch. 8:10that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth. 15For by now I could have put out my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth. 16#Cited Rom. 9:17; [ch. 10:1, 2; 11:9; 14:17; Prov. 16:4] But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so #[Ps. 83:18]; Isa. 63:12that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth. 17#[Neh. 9:10]You are still exalting yourself against my people and will not let them go. 18Behold, about this time tomorrow I will cause very heavy hail to fall, such as never has been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now. 19Now therefore send, #[ver. 4]get your livestock and all that you have in the field into safe shelter, for every man and beast that is in the field and is not brought home will die when the hail falls on them.”’” 20Then whoever feared the word of the Lord among the servants of Pharaoh hurried his slaves and his livestock into the houses, 21but whoever did not pay attention to the word of the Lord left his slaves and his livestock in the field.
22Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, so that there may be #Rev. 16:21hail in all the land of Egypt, on man and beast and every plant of the field, in the land of Egypt.” 23Then Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and the #Ps. 78:47, 48; 105:32; [Josh. 10:11; 1 Sam. 12:17; Ps. 18:13; 148:8; Isa. 30:30; Ezek. 38:22; Rev. 8:7]Lord sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth. And the Lord rained hail upon the land of Egypt. 24There was hail and fire flashing continually in the midst of the hail, very heavy hail, such as had never been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25The hail struck down everything that was in the field in all the land of Egypt, both man and beast. And the hail #Ps. 78:47; 105:33struck down every plant of the field and broke every tree of the field. 26#ver. 4, 6; ch. 8:22; 10:23; 11:7; 12:13; [Isa. 32:18]Only in the land of Goshen, where the people of Israel were, was there no hail.
27Then Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, “This time #ch. 10:16I have sinned; the #2 Chr. 12:6; Ps. 129:4; 145:17; Lam. 1:18; Dan. 9:14Lord is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong. 28#See ch. 8:8Plead with the Lord, for there has been enough of God’s thunder and hail. I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.” 29Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, #1 Kgs. 8:22, 38; Ps. 143:6; Isa. 1:15I will stretch out my hands to the Lord. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that #Ps. 24:1; 1 Cor. 10:26; [Deut. 10:14]the earth is the Lord’s. 30But as for you and your servants, #Isa. 26:10I know that you do not yet fear the Lord God.” 31(The flax and the barley were struck down, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud. 32But the wheat and the emmer#9:32 A type of wheat were not struck down, for they are late in coming up.) 33So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and #[See ver. 29 above]stretched out his hands to the Lord, and the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured upon the earth. 34But when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet again and #See ch. 7:14hardened his heart, #1 Sam. 6:6he and his servants. 35So #See ch. 4:21the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people of Israel go, just as the Lord had spoken through Moses.

Exodus 9

Livestock, Boils, Hail
1Then Adonai said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, and tell him: This is what Adonai, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘Let My people go, so they may serve Me.’
2For if you refuse to let them go, and hold them still,
3behold, the hand of Adonai will fall upon your livestock that are in the field—on the horses, donkeys, camels, herds and flocks. There will be a crushing plague.
4But Adonai will make a distinction between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt, and nothing will die that belongs to Bnei-Yisrael.”
5Also Adonai set a specific time, saying, “Tomorrow Adonai will do this thing in the land.”
6Then the next day, Adonai did the deed. All the cattle of Egypt died, yet of the cattle of Bnei-Yisrael, not one died.
7When Pharaoh inquired, there was not so much as one of the cattle of Bnei-Yisrael dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was stubborn, and he did not let the people go.
8Then Adonai said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from the furnace, and have Moses throw it heavenward in the sight of Pharaoh.
9It will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and will become boils erupting with sores on both men and animals throughout all the land.”
10So they took soot from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh. When Moses threw it heavenward, it became boils erupting with sores on both men and animals.
11Moreover, the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, because they were on the magicians, as on all the Egyptians.
12But Adonai hardened the heart of Pharaoh, so he did not listen to them—just as Adonai had said to Moses.
13Then Adonai said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning, stand before Pharaoh and say to him: This is what Adonai the God of the Hebrews says: ‘Let My people go, so they may serve Me.
14For this time I will send all My plagues to your heart, and on your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth.
15Surely by now I could have stretched out My hand and struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth.
16However, I have let you stand for this reason: to show you My power, and that My Name might be proclaimed throughout all the earth.
17Yet still you exalt yourself over My people, by not letting them go.
18Behold, tomorrow at about this time, I will cause it to rain a very severe hailstorm, the likes of which has not occurred in Egypt since the day it was founded until now.
19Send word, shelter your cattle and all that you have in the field. For every person and animal found in the field and not brought home, when the hail comes down on them, they will die.’”
20Whoever feared the word of Adonai among the servants of Pharaoh had his own servants and cattle flee into the houses,
21but whoever disregarded the word of Adonai left his servants and cattle in the field.
22Then Adonai said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven and let there be hail in all the land of Egypt, on people, animals and every plant of the field, throughout all the land.”
23So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and Adonai sent thunder and hail. Fire came down on the earth, as Adonai rained hail on the land of Egypt.
24The hail fell very severely, with fire flashing up amidst the hail, the likes of which had not occurred in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.
25The hail struck down everything that was in the fields, both men and animals, all throughout the land of Egypt. It also struck every plant of the field and broke down every tree.
26Only in the land of Goshen, where Bnei-Yisrael were, was there no hail.
27So Pharaoh sent, called for Moses and Aaron and said to them, “I have sinned this time. Adonai is righteous, while I and my people are wicked.
28Pray to Adonai—there has been enough of God’s thunders and hail! I will let you go. You don’t have to stay any longer.”
29Moses said to him, “As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will stretch out my hands to Adonai. The thunder will cease and there will be no more hail—so you may know that the earth is Adonai’s.
30But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear Adonai Elohim.”
31(The flax and the barley were destroyed, because the barley was in the ear, and the flax was in bloom.
32But the wheat and the spelt were not destroyed, because they ripen later.)
33Moses went out of the city, away from Pharaoh, and stretched out his hands to Adonai. Then the thunder and hail ceased, and rain no longer poured down on the earth.
34But when Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail and the thunder had ceased, he increased his sin and hardened his heart, both he and his servants.
35So Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and he did not let Bnei-Yisrael go—just as Adonai had said by Moses’ hand.
