2 Timothy 1

Greeting

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s sovereign choice and appointment, commissioned in accordance with the promise of eternal life that is available in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my beloved spiritual son:

May you experience grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

Stir into Flame the Gift of God in You

3 I express gratitude to God, whom I worship with a conscience free from guilt just as my forefathers did, as I make mention of you constantly in my prayers both during the night hours and throughout the day.

4 I am filled with longing to see you again, remembering the tears you shed at our parting, so that I might be filled with complete joy.

5 I hold in my memory the sincere and authentic faith that resides in you, the same faith that first made its home in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I remain fully convinced that this faith now lives powerfully in you as well.

6 It is for this very reason that I remind you to fan into flame and keep ablaze the spiritual gift that God placed within you when I laid my hands upon you in commissioning.

7 For the Spirit that God has imparted to us does not produce cowardice or timidity, but rather produces power, love, and disciplined thinking.

Instructions for Timothy

8 So do not be embarrassed about bearing witness to our Lord, nor be ashamed of me who am imprisoned because of Him, but join with me in accepting hardship for the sake of the gospel, drawing strength from the power that God supplies,

9 who has rescued us from condemnation and summoned us with a calling that is holy and set apart, not because of anything we have accomplished, but in accordance with His own predetermined plan and the grace He freely gave us in Christ Jesus from before the ages of time began,

10 and this grace has now been openly revealed through the arrival of our Savior Christ Jesus, who has abolished the power and authority of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

11 It is for the sake of this gospel that I was designated as a public proclaimer, as an apostle with authority, and as an instructor of truth.

12 It is because of my commitment to this gospel that I am experiencing these present hardships, yet I feel no shame, for I have intimate knowledge of the One in whom I have invested my confidence, and I stand fully persuaded that He possesses the ability to safeguard what I have placed in His care until the day of His return.

13 Maintain as your standard the collection of healthy teachings that you received from me, holding them in the context of the faith and love that are experienced in Christ Jesus.

14 Protect the precious deposit of truth that has been entrusted to your care, doing so by the power of the Holy Spirit who makes His dwelling within us.

The Household of Onesiphorus and Paul

15 You are aware of this reality, that all the believers in the province of Asia have abandoned me, and among these are Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord extend compassion to the family of Onesiphorus, for he repeatedly brought refreshment to my spirit and felt no embarrassment about the chains I wear as a prisoner.

17 On the contrary, when he came to the city of Rome, he pursued me with great determination until he located me.

18 May the Lord allow him to experience divine mercy from the Lord on the day of final judgment. And you are thoroughly aware of the many ways he ministered to me during my time in Ephesus.
