2 Peter 1

Greeting

1 Simeon Peter, one who belongs entirely to Jesus Christ as His servant, and is sent with apostolic authority,

To those who have received a faith equally precious as ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

2 May grace and peace be abundantly increased to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

3 His divine power has granted to us all things necessary for living and for godliness through the knowledge of the One who summoned us to His own glory and virtue,

4 through which He has bestowed on us His precious and magnificent promises, so that through these you might become sharers in God’s nature, having fled from the spiritual and moral decay that is in the world through sinful craving.

Spiritual Qualities in Increasing Measure

5 For this precise reason, apply all diligence to add to your faith moral excellence, and to moral excellence add knowledge,

6 and to knowledge add self-discipline, and to self-discipline add patient endurance, and to patient endurance add godliness,

7 and to godliness add brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness add love.

8 For if these qualities belong to you and are increasing, they keep you from being useless or barren in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 For whoever lacks these qualities is spiritually shortsighted to the point of blindness, having become forgetful of the cleansing he received from his former sins.

10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be even more zealous to make certain your calling and election, for if you practice these things, you will absolutely never stumble.

11 For in this manner, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

Peter’s Imminent Death

12 Therefore, I intend to keep reminding you concerning these matters, even though you already know them and stand firm in the truth that is present with you.

13 I regard it as right, as long as I remain in this bodily tent, to awaken you by means of reminder,

14 knowing that the putting off of my bodily tent is coming soon, just as our Lord Jesus Christ revealed to me.

15 And I will endeavor to ensure that after my departure you will always have the ability to remember these things.

Christ’s Honor and Glory, and the Prophetic Word

16 For we did not follow artfully fabricated myths when we made known to you the power and appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had become eyewitnesses of His magnificence.

17 For He received honor and glory from God the Father when a voice came to Him from the magnificent glory, declaring, “This is My Son, My Beloved One, in whom My delight rests”*—

18 and we ourselves heard this voice borne from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

19 And we possess the prophetic word made more reliable, to which you do well to pay careful attention, as to a lamp giving light in a murky place, until the day breaks and the morning star arises in your hearts.

20 Understanding this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture originates from one’s private interpretation.

21 For prophecy never came by human initiative, but people spoke from God as they were borne along by the Holy Spirit.
