2 Corinthians 2

1 Yet I resolved this matter within myself: for your benefit, I chose not to make another visit that would bring renewed sorrow.

2 For if I am the cause of your pain, who then would be the source of my encouragement, except those whom I have saddened?

3 That is why I wrote as I did, so that when I eventually came, I would not be distressed by those who should have been my joy. I had confidence in all of you that my joy is inseparably tied to the joy of you all.

4 For I wrote to you out of deep affliction and inner anguish, with many tears, not with the intention of causing you pain, but so that you might fully understand the depth of my love for you.

Reaffirming Love for the Offender

5 Now if someone has caused sorrow, he has not brought sorrow upon me alone, but in part—and I say this gently—upon all of you.

6 The corrective discipline imposed by the majority is sufficient for such a person.

7 Therefore, instead of continuing in severity, you should forgive him and comfort him, so that he is not overwhelmed and crushed by excessive sorrow.

8 For this reason, I urge you to reaffirm your love toward him in a tangible way.

9 Indeed, this was one purpose of my earlier writing: to test the genuineness of your character and to see whether you would demonstrate obedience in all matters.

10 Now whoever you forgive, I also forgive. For whatever I have forgiven, if there was anything to forgive, I did so for your sake, standing before Christ.

11 This was so that Satan would not gain an advantage over us, for we are well aware of his schemes and intentions.

12 Now when I came to Troas for the proclamation of the gospel of Christ, even though an opportunity for ministry had been opened to me by the Lord,

13 my spirit found no rest because I did not find Titus, my brother. Therefore, I said farewell to them and went on into Macedonia.

14 But thanks be to God, who continually leads us as captives in His victorious procession in Christ, and who makes known through us the aroma of the knowledge of Him everywhere.

15 For we are, to God, the pleasing aroma of Christ among both those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

16 To the one group, we are a scent that issues from death and leads to death; to the other, a scent that issues from life and leads to life. And who is adequate for such a calling?

17 For we are not like the many who treat the word of God as a commodity for profit. Rather, we speak with sincerity, as those sent from God, speaking before God in union with Christ.
