1 Timothy 2

Praying for All People

1 I strongly urge, then, as the first priority, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be made for all human beings,

2 for kings and for all who occupy positions of governmental authority, in order that we might live a peaceful and quiet life marked by full godliness and dignity in every respect.

3 This practice is good and finds acceptance in the presence of God our Savior,

4 who wants all human beings to be saved and come to possess full and accurate knowledge of the truth.

5 For one God exists, and one mediator stands between God and humanity, the man Christ Jesus,

6 who surrendered Himself as the price of redemption for all people—this declaration was made at the time appointed by God—

7 and it is for the proclamation of this truth that I was appointed as a herald and as an apostle (I am telling the truth and not lying), as an instructor of the Gentile nations in the realm of faith and truth.

Instructions for Christian Men and Women

8 My desire, then, is that in every place of gathering the men should offer prayers, raising up hands that are set apart and holy, free from anger and from contentious argument.

9 In the same way, I desire that women should present themselves in clothing that is fitting and proper, adorning themselves with modesty and sensible restraint, not with intricately braided hairstyles or with gold jewelry or with pearls or with expensive clothing,

10 but instead with what is appropriate for women who profess to revere God—that is, through deeds that demonstrate goodness and virtue.

11 A woman should receive instruction in a quiet and peaceful manner with an attitude of full submission to the teaching.

12 I do not allow a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

13 For Adam was fashioned and formed first, and only afterward was Eve created.

14 And it was not Adam who was deceived and led into transgression; rather, it was the woman who was completely deceived and fell into violation of God’s command.

15 Yet she will be preserved through the bearing of children, if they continue in faith and love and holiness, accompanied by self-control.*

15 The shift from the singular pronoun she to the plural pronoun they reflects normal usage in Koine Greek, where she refers specifically to Eve and they extends the application to women as a category.
