Philippians 1

1
Apostolic Greeting
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the overseers and deacons:
2 Grace to you, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Pauline Thanksgiving
3 I give thanks to my God in all my* remembrance of you, 4 always in every supplication of mine for all of you, making my supplication with joy, 5 because of your participation* in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that the One who commenced a good work in you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus. 7 Just as it is right for me to think this about all of you because I have you in my heart, since you all are fellow participants of grace with me, both in my imprisonment* and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affections of Christ Jesus.
Pauline Prayer
9 And this I pray, that your love may overflow still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes* through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
The Furtherance of the Gospel
12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that my situations* have actually led to the advancement of the gospel, 13 so that my imprisonment in Christ has become known throughout the entire imperial guard* and to all the rest; 14 and most of the brothers, relying on the Lord because of my imprisonment, dare all the more to speak the word* fearlessly.
15 Some, indeed, are preaching Christ even because of envy* and rivalry, but some also because of goodwill. 16 The latter* do so* out of love, realising that I am appointed for the defence of the gospel. 17 The former* proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not with pure motives, thinking to stir up distress for me in my imprisonment.** 18 What then? Only that in every way—whether in pretence or in truth—Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice.
19 For I know that this will result* in deliverance for me through your prayer and the provision* of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my intense expectation and hope, that I will be ashamed in nothing, but with all boldness—even now as always—Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if it is to live in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labour for me.* Yet what I shall choose, I do not know.* 23 But I am hard-pressed between the two options, having the desire to depart and to be with Christ, for that is far better. 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. 25 And being convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your advancement and joy in the faith, 26 so that your boasting in Christ Jesus may overflow because of me through my coming to you again.*
The Faith of the Gospel
27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your situations,* that you are standing firm in one spirit,* with one soul striving together for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not being frightened in any way by those who oppose you—which is a sign of destruction to them, but of salvation for you—and this is from God. 29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, 30 experiencing the same struggle which you saw in me, and now hear to be* in me.
