Mark 8

8
The Feeding of the Four Thousand
Matt. 15:32-39
1 In those days, there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. Calling the disciples to Himself, He said to them, 2 “I have compassion for the crowd, because they have remained with Me for three days now and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their homes they will faint on the way, and some of them have come from a long distance.” 4 And His disciples answered Him, “From where can anyone provide sufficient bread to satisfy these people here in this deserted place?” 5 And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” So they said, “Seven.” 6 And He commanded the crowd to sit down in a relaxed posture on the ground. Taking the seven loaves and giving thanks, He broke them and kept giving them to His disciples to set before them. So they set them before the crowd. 7 And they had a few small fish, and after blessing them, He told them to set these also before them. 8 And they ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the leftovers of broken pieces, seven baskets.
9 Now there were approximately four thousand. And He dismissed them. 10 And immediately, He got into the boat with His disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha.
The Unbelief of the Pharisees
Matt. 16:1-4
11 Then the Pharisees came out and started to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. 12 And sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation!” 13 And leaving them, He got into the boat again, and went to the other side.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and the Herod
Matt. 16:5-12
14 Now they had forgotten to take bread,* and except for one loaf, they had none with them in the boat. 15 And He was issuing instructions to them, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod!” 16 And they were reasoning with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And knowing this, Jesus* said to them, “Why are you reasoning the fact that you have no bread? * Do you not yet consider or understand? Have your hearts been hardened? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 After I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” They said to Him, “Twelve.” 20 “After I also broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they said,* “Seven.” 21 So He was saying to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22 And they came to Bethsaida. And they brought to Him a blind man* and begged Him that He would touch him. 23 And taking hold of the blind man’s hand, He led him out of the village, and after spitting in his eyes and laying His hands on him, He was asking him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And looking up, he kept saying, “I see the men,* for I see them as trees, walking around.” 25 Then He laid His hands on his eyes again, and he saw clearly. He regained his sight and continued to see everything distinctly. 26 And He sent him away to his home, saying, “Do not even go into the village.” *
The Confession of Peter
Matt. 16:13-20; Lk. 9:18-21
27 And Jesus and His disciples went out to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and on the way He began to ask His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”* 29 And He continued to ask them, “But who do you say that I am?” In response, Peter said to Him, “You are the Christ!”* 30 Then He warned them that they should tell no one about Him.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection
Matt. 16:21-28; Lk. 9:22-27
31 And He began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be killed, and after three days to rise again. 32 And He was speaking openly about the matter, and Peter, after taking Him aside, began to reprimand Him. 33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He reprimanded Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you are not setting your thoughts on the matters * of God, but on the matters * of men.”
34 And when He had called the crowd to Himself with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone desires to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for the sake of Me and for the gospel will save it. 36 For what does it benefit a man * to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For what can a man give as an exchange for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father accompanied by the holy angels.”
Notes
14 Greek loaves
17 Some ancient manuscripts read He
17 Two ancient Greek manuscripts read: Why are you reasoning among yourselves that you did not take bread, O you of little faith? This was likely done in order to harmonise the text with a parallel in Matt. 16:8
20 Some ancient manuscripts insert at this point the prepositional phrase to Him
22 The word man is supplied to the text on a contextual basis for the purpose of clarification
24 Or people, as the term is generically understood
26 Some ancient manuscripts insert at this point the expression nor tell it to anyone in the village
28 Greek and others, that one of the prophets
29 Two ancient Greek manuscripts insert the Son of God at this point, while one other inserts the Son of the living God , in order to harmonise the text with a parallel reading in Matt. 16:16
33 Greek things. Used twice in this verse
36 Or a person, as generically understood. So also v. 37
