The Resurrection of Jesus
Matt. 28:1-8; Lk. 24:1-12; Jn. 20:1-10
1 Now when the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome* bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb after the sun had risen. 3 And they were saying among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was exceedingly large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were overwhelmed with astonishment. 6 But he said to them, “Do not be overwhelmed with astonishment. You are seeking Jesus, the Nazarene,* the One who was crucified. He has been raised! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you to Galilee. There you will see Him, just as He said to you.” 8 And after going out, they fled from the tomb, for trembling and amazement had taken hold of them. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.*
The Appearance of Jesus to Mary Magdalene
Matt. 28:9-10; Jn. 20:11-18
9 [[Now when He arose early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. 10 She, having gone, reported it to those who were with Him, as they were grieving and weeping. 11 And they, having heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, disbelieved it.
12 Now after these things, He appeared in a different form to two of them as they were walking, while they were going into the country. 13 And they, having gone away, reported it to the rest, but they did not believe them.
The Great Commission
Matt . 28:16-20; Lk. 24:36-49; Jn. 20:19-23; Acts 1:6-8
14 And later, as they were reclining at the table, He appeared to the eleven. He then rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, for they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had been raised.* 15 And He said to them, “Going * into all the world, preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 The one who has believed and has been baptised will be saved, but the one who has not believed will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who have believed: In My name they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents with their hands; * and if they drink anything deadly, it will never hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well.”
19 So then, after the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven, and He sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they, having gone out, preached everywhere, while the Lord was working together with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it.*]]*
Notes
1 One ancient Greek manuscript, continuing the narrative from 15:47, omits the expression when the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, so that it reads from 15:47 as: Now Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joses, were watching where He was laid, and they bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him
6 Two ancient Greek manuscripts omit the appositive phrase the Nazarene
8 Some ancient manuscripts include the shorter ending of Mark, which is given as: And they promptly reported all the things they had been commanded to those around Peter. And after these things, Jesus Himself also sent out, through them, the holy and imperishable preaching of eternal salvation, extending from the east to the west. Amen.
14 Some ancient manuscripts insert at this point the prepositional phrase from the dead
15 Or go
18 Some ancient manuscripts omit the instrumental phrase with their hands
9-20 Some earliest manuscripts omit the longer ending of Mark, that is, vv. 9-20
20 Some ancient manuscripts insert Amen at the end of the verse
