Mark 13

13
The Destruction of the Temple Predicted
Matt. 24:1-2; Lk. 21:5-6
1 Then as He was going out of the temple,* one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see! What sort of stones and buildings are these?”* 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not a single stone will be left here * upon another stone, which will not be demolished.”
Eschatological Discourse: The Beginning of Woes
Matt. 24:3-14; Lk. 21:7-19
3 And as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were asking Him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “Watch out, lest anyone mislead you. 6 Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ * and they will mislead many. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened. This must occur, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places. There will be famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “But you, watch out for yourselves. * They will deliver you over to courts, * and you will be beaten in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings because of Me, as a witness to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but whatever is given to you in that hour, speak that. For you are not the ones speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver over brother to death, and a father his child, * and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all because of My name. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
Eschatological Discourse: The Great Tribulation
Matt. 24:15-28; Lk. 21:20-24
14 “Now when you see the abomination of desolation * standing where it ought not to be”—let the one who reads exercise discernment— “then let those in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let the one on the housetop not come down, nor enter to take anything out of his house, 16 and let the one in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 17 But alas for those women who are pregnant, * and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 18 But pray that it may not occur in winter. 19 For in those days, there will be such tribulation as has not occurred from the beginning of the creation which God created * until now, and never will occur. 20 And if the Lord had not shortened the days, no flesh would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has shortened the days. 21 “And at that time, if anyone says to you, “See, here is the Christ,’ ‘See, there He is,’ do not believe it! 22 For false christs and false prophets will emerge and will give signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, the elect. 23 But you, watch out; * I have told you all things in advance.
Eschatological Discourse: The Coming of the Son of Man
Matt. 24:29-31; Lk. 21:25-28
24 “Furthermore, in those days after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, * and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then He will send out the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of heaven. *
Eschatological Discourse: The Lesson of the Fig Trees
Matt. 24:32-35; Lk. 21:29-33
28 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also you, when you see these things occurring, know that He is near, at the gates. 30 Truly, I say to you that this generation will never pass away until all these things occur. 31 Heaven and earth * will pass away, but my words will never * pass away.
Eschatological Discourse: The Unknown Day and Hour
Matt. 24:36-44
32 “But concerning that day or the hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, except the Father. 33 Watch out! Keep awake! * For you do not know when the appointed time is. 34 It is like a man embarking on a journey, who left his house and entrusted his servants with authority, assigning * to each one his task, and commanded the doorkeeper to keep awake. 35 Therefore, keep awake, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or early in the morning, 36 lest coming suddenly, he finds you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Keep awake.”
