Mark 11

The Triumphal Entry
Matt. 21:1-11; Lk. 19:28-40; Jn. 12:12-19
1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied, on which no one * has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say ‘The Lord has need of it, and He will send it back here as soon as possible.’ ” 4 So they departed and found a colt tied at the door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 But some of those standing there began to say to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they spoke to them, as Jesus had said, and they granted them permission. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went ahead and those following were crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”
11 And He entered Jerusalem and proceeded into the temple.* And after looking around at everything, since the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.
The Cursing of the Fig Tree
Matt. 21:18-19
12 And on the next day, having departed from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 And seeing from a distance a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He might find anything on it. But when He came to it, He found nothing except leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And in response, He said to it, “May no one eat fruit from you any more forever!” ** And His disciples heard it.
The Cleansing of the Temple
Matt. 21:12-17; Lk. 19:45-48; Jn. 2:13-22
15 Then they came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple* and began to drive out those selling and those buying in the temple;* and He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 16 And He would not permit anyone to carry merchandise through the temple. 17 And He was teaching and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a hideout for robbers!” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard it, and they began to seek how to destroy Him; for they were afraid of Him, because all the crowd was struck with amazement at His teaching. 19 And when evening came, they would go out of the city.
The Significance of the Withered Fig Tree
Matt. 21:20-22
20 Now as they went along in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 And when he remembered, Peter said to Him, “Rabbi, see! The fig tree which You cursed has withered!” 22 And in response, Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you that whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and thrown into the sea’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. * 24 Therefore, I say to you, everything that you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be done for you. * 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, in order that your Father who is in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.” *
Jesus' Authority Questioned
Matt. 21:23-27; Lk. 20:1-8
27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And while He was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders approached Him 28 and began to say to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things, or who gave You this authority to do these things?” 29 But Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer Me, and I will tell You by what authority I am doing these things. 30 The baptism of John—did it originate from heaven, or from men?” Answer Me.” 31 And they began to reason this among themselves, saying,* “If we say ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From men’ ”—they were continually afraid of the crowd, for they all were holding that John really was a prophet. 33 And in response, they said to Jesus, “We do not know.” Then Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
