The Temptation of Jesus
Mk. 1:12-13; Lk. 4:1-13
1 Subsequently, Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry afterwards.* 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, speak that these stones become bread.” 4 But in response, He said, “It is written:
‘Man shall not live on bread alone,
but on every word which proceeds out of the mouth * of God.” *
5 After this, the devil took Him to the holy city and placed Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and he said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down, for it is written:
‘He will give orders to His angels concerning you,’
and
‘On their hands they will carry you, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”*
7 Jesus said to him, “Once more, it is written,
‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” *
8 Once more, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, 9 and he said to Him, “All these things I will give to You, if You will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him,
“Depart, Satan! For it is written:
‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and Him only you shall serve.’ ” *
11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and began attending to Him.*
The Beginning of Jesus' Galilean Ministry
Mk. 1:14-15; Lk. 4:14-15
12 Now, having heard that John had been arrested, He* withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was* to fulfil what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, which says,
15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people sitting* in darkness have seen a great light,
and the ones sitting* in the territory and shadow of death,
a light has dawned on them.”*
17 From that time on, Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”
Jesus Calls the Four Fishermen
Mk. 1:16-20; Lk. 5:1-11
18 Now, as He was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And He spoke to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” * 20 And immediately, they left the nets and followed Him. 21 And going on from there, He saw two other brothers: James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, in the boat with Zebedee, their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 And immediately, they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.*
Jesus' Three-fold Ministry
Lk. 6:17-19
23 And He went around through all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every illness* among the people. 24 And the report regarding Him spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to Him all the sick: those who had various diseases and pains, those who were afflicted and demon-possessed, and those who were epileptic and paralysed.* And He healed them. 25 And large crowds followed Him from Galilee and Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
Notes
2 The word afterwards is used in the Greek text and is retained in this translation for exegetical purposes, though it may sound redundant in English
4 One ancient Greek manuscript reads but on every word of God , thus expunging from the text the participial phrase translated as which proceeds out of the mouth
4 Quoted from Deut. 8:3
6 Quoted from Ps. 91:11-12
7 Quoted from Deut. 6:16
10 Quoted from Deut. 6:13
11 Or began attending to His needs
12 Some ancient manuscripts insert the name Jesus , so that the reading becomes Jesus instead of He
14 The expression This was is contextually supplied for the purpose of clarification
16 Or residing . Used twice in this verse
15-16 Quoted from Is. 9:1-2
19 Or people, as the term is generically understood
