The Transfiguration
Mk. 9:2-13; Lk. 9:28-36
1 And after six days, Jesus took along Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him. 4 And in response, Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is fitting that we are here. If You desire, I will make here three tents, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, the Beloved One, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!” 6 And when the disciples heard this, they fell down on their faces and were greatly afraid. 7 And Jesus approached and touched them, and said, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” 8 And when they raised their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus Himself alone.
9 And as they were descending from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell no one the vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” 10 And the disciples inquired of Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes assert that Elijah must come first?” 11 And in response, He* said, “Elijah indeed does come, and he will restore all things. 12 But I say to you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognise him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them concerning John the Baptist.
The Healing of a Demon-Possessed Boy
Mk. 9:14-29; Lk. 9:37-43a
14 And when they came to the crowd, a man came to Him, kneeling before Him 15 and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, because he has seizures and suffers miserably, for often he falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not heal him.” 17 And in response, Jesus said, “O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long * will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed from that hour.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, Why were we not able to cast it out?” 20 And He* said to them, “It is on account of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” *
Jesus Speaks Again of His Death and Resurrection
Mk. 9:30-32; Lk. 9:43b-45
22 Now when they gathered in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised.” And they were greatly sad.
Miraculous Payment of the Temple Tax
24 Now when they arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma temple tax?” 25 He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect tolls or poll-tax, from their own sons, or from foreigners?” 26 And when he said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are exempt from such obligation. 27 But so that we do not offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. And when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. * Take that and give it to them for Me and you.”

20 Some ancient manuscripts insert the name Jesus at this point, so that it reads: And Jesus said to them
20 Some ancient manuscripts interpolate Mk. 9:29 at the end of this verse, thus creating a new verse 21. Verse 21 then reads: This kind is able to come out by nothing except by prayer
