Acts 18

18
Paul in Corinth
1 Following these events,* having departed from Athens, he came to Corinth. 2 And he found a certain Jew, Aquila by name, a native of Pontus,* who had recently come from Italy with Priscilla his wife, because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to depart from Rome. And he went to them, 3 and by virtue of the fact that he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade.* 4 And he argued in the synagogue every Sabbath, persuading both Jews and Greeks.
5 But when both Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began to devote himself exclusively to the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. 6 And when they opposed and vilified him, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am cleared of all responsibility! From now on, I will go to the Gentiles.” 7 And leaving there, he came to the house of a certain person, Titius Justus by name, a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue. 8 And Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with all his household. And many of the Corinthians when they heard, believed and were baptised. 9 And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not fear, but continue to speak, and do not be silent, 10 because I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, because there are many people who belong to Me in this city.” 11 And he remained there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
12 But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews rose up with one accord against Paul and brought him before the judgment seat,* 13 saying, “This man is inciting people to worship God contrary to the Law.” 14 But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of legal wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you. 15 But if it is questions concerning a word and names and with particular reference to your own Law, see to it yourselves. I do not wish to be a judge of these matters.”* 16 And he dismissed them from the judgment seat. 17 And they all seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and began beating him before the judgment seat. And none of these things mattered to Gallio.
The Return to Antioch
18 Now Paul, after staying many days longer, took leave of the brothers and sailed away to Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchrea, he shaved his head, for he had taken a vow. 19 And they arrived in Ephesus, and he left them there, but he himself entered the synagogue and discussed with the Jews. 20 And when they asked him to stay for a longer time, he did not assent. 21 But taking leave of them, he said,* “I will return to you again if God wills,” and he sailed from Ephesus.
22 And when he landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. 23 And having spent some time there, he departed, passing through one place after another in the Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
Apollos in Ephesus and Achaia (Corinth)
24 Now a certain Jew, Apollos by name, an Alexandrian, arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, powerful in the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John. 26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and expounded the way of God to him more accurately. 27 And when he wanted to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he came, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace. 28 For he was intensely refuting the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.
