Paul's Desire and Supplication for the Salvation of Israel
1 Brothers and sisters, the deepest desire and longing of my heart, and my continual prayer and supplication to God on behalf of my fellow Israelites, is for their salvation and deliverance.
2 For I bear witness about them that they possess zeal for God, but their zeal is not based on true knowledge and understanding of God's way of salvation.
3 For being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God—the righteousness He provides through faith—and seeking to establish and achieve their own righteousness, they did not submit themselves to God's righteousness.
4 For Christ is the culmination, the goal, and the end of the Law as a means to righteousness for everyone who believes and trusts in Him—He fulfils what the Law pointed towards and brings the Law's purpose to completion.
Universal Invitation to Believe in Christ
5 For Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes by keeping the Law: "The person who does these things—who perfectly obeys all the Law's commands—will live by them and find life through them."*
6 But the righteousness that comes by faith speaks in a different manner, saying: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'"—as if you needed to bring Christ down from heaven,
7 Or "Who will descend into the abyss?"—as if you needed to bring Christ up from the dead and accomplish what only God can do.
8 But what does this righteousness of faith say? "The word is near you, it is in your mouth and in your heart"—that is, the message of faith, the gospel which we proclaim.
9 Because if you confess and openly declare with your mouth the truth that "Jesus is Lord"—acknowledging His deity and authority—and believe in your heart with genuine trust that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes and trusts, which leads to justification or declaration of righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses, which leads to salvation and deliverance.
11 For the Scripture declares, "Everyone who believes and trusts in Him will not be put to shame, disappointed, or disgraced."
12 For there is no distinction or difference between Jew and Greek—Gentile—in the way of salvation, for the same Lord is Lord over all people, generously dispensing and lavishing His spiritual riches upon all who call upon Him in faith.
13 "For everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord—whoever invokes His name in faith—will be saved."*
The Necessity of Preaching the Gospel
14 How then can they call upon Him in whom they have not yet believed and placed their trust? And how can they believe in Him of whom they have not heard the message? And how can they hear the gospel apart from someone who proclaims it?
15 And how can people preach unless they are sent with God's commission and authority? Just as it stands written in Scripture: "How beautiful and timely are the feet of those who bring good news and preach the gospel of good things."*
Israel's Rejection Despite Hearing
16 But not all who heard the gospel have obeyed and responded to it in faith, for Isaiah prophetically says, "Lord, who has believed our report and message?"*
17 So then, faith comes into being and arises from hearing the message, and the hearing comes through the word and message about Christ.
18 But I raise the question, have they—the people of Israel—never heard the gospel? Certainly they have heard! Scripture testifies:
"Their voice and proclamation has gone out into all the earth,
and their words have reached the ends of the inhabited world."*
19 But I ask further, did Israel not understand and know? First, Moses declares prophetically:
"I will provoke you to jealousy by means of those who are not a nation—the Gentiles;
by a foolish nation without understanding I will make you angry."*
20 And Isaiah speaks even more boldly and daringly, saying in God's voice:
"I was found by those who were not seeking Me;
I revealed Myself manifest to those who were not inquiring after Me
or asking for Me"—speaking of the Gentiles who found God.
21 But concerning Israel, God says through Isaiah:
"All day long I have stretched out My hands in invitation
and appeal to a people who are disobedient, obstinate,
and rebelliously insubordinate"—continually offering mercy to those who refuse to accept it.
