Jesus Speaks About the Destruction of the Temple
Mk. 13:1-2; Lk. 21:5-6
1 And after Jesus had departed from the temple courts and was going away, His disciples came to draw His attention to the edifices of the temple and its magnificent buildings.
2 But in response, He said to them, "You see all these things, do you not? Truly, I say to you, not a single stone will be left here upon another stone, which will not be thrown down."
Eschatological Discourse: The Beginning of Woes
Mk. 13:3-13; Lk. 21:7-19
3 And while He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him in private, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the consummation—the end—of the age?"
4 And in response, Jesus said to them, "Watch out, lest anyone lead you astray.
5 For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ—the Messiah,' and they will mislead many people.
6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for this must occur according to God's plan, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in diverse locations throughout the world.
8 But all these events are merely the beginning of birth pains—the initial signs before the final culmination.
9 "Then they will deliver you over to persecution and tribulation and will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations because of My name.
10 And then many will fall away from the faith, and betray one another, and hate one another.
11 And many false prophets will emerge and mislead many people;
12 and because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold and their devotion will wane.
13 But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Eschatological Discourse: The Abomination of Desolation
Mk. 13:14-23; Lk. 21:20-24
15 "Therefore, when you see the abomination of desolation—the sacrilege—spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place"—let the one who reads exercise discernment and understanding—
16 "then let those in Judea flee to the mountains immediately.
17 Let the one on the housetop not come down to take things out of his house,
18 and let the one in the field not turn back to take his cloak.
19 And alas for those women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants during those days of tribulation!
20 But pray that your escape may not take place in winter—when travel is difficult or on a Sabbath—when movement is restricted.
21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not occurred from the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will occur again.
22 And unless those days were shortened by God's mercy, no flesh would be saved or survive. But for the sake of the elect—the chosen ones, those days will be shortened.
23 "If anyone says to you at that time, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or 'Here He is,' do not believe it.
24 For false christs and false prophets will emerge and give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.
25 Behold, I have told you in advance—you have been warned.
26 So, if they say to you, 'Behold, He is in the wilderness,' do not go out; or 'Behold, He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it.
27 For just as the lightning comes from the east and is visible as far as the west instantaneously, so will be the coming of the Son of Man—sudden and unmistakable.
28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will be gathered.
Eschatological Discourse: The Coming of the Son of Man
Mk. 13:24-27; Lk. 21:25-28
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will cease to shine, the stars will fall from the heavens, and the cosmic powers will be violently disturbed.
30 Then the sign announcing the Son of Man will appear in the heavens. At that moment, all the peoples of the earth will mourn, and they will behold the Son of Man arriving upon the clouds of heaven, clothed with divine power and overwhelming glory.
31 He will then send His angels with a resounding trumpet blast, and they will assemble His elect from every direction—from the farthest reaches of the heavens to their furthest boundaries.
Eschatological Discourse: The Lesson of the Fig Tree
Mk. 13:28-31; Lk. 21:29-33
32 Take instruction from the fig tree: when its branches become tender and new leaves emerge, you recognise that the season of summer is approaching.
33 In the same way, when you observe all these events unfolding, understand that the time is near—right at the threshold.
34 I assure you with certainty that this generation will not disappear before all these matters are brought to fulfilment.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away—they are eternally true.
Eschatological Discourse: The Unknown Day of the Son of Man's Coming
Mk. 13:32-37; Lk. 17:26-30, 34-36
36 "But concerning that day and hour of My return, no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son in His earthly ministry, but the Father alone.
37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For as in those days prior to the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark.
39 And they were unaware and unprepared until the flood came and carried them all away in judgment. So also will be the coming of the Son of Man.
40 In that moment, two men will be working side by side in the field—one will be taken, while the other will remain.
41 Likewise, two women will be grinding grain together—one will be taken, and the other will be left behind.
42 For this reason, remain spiritually awake, because you do not know the day on which your Lord will arrive.
43 Understand this: If the owner of a house had known the hour during the night when a thief would come, he would have stayed awake and would not have allowed his home to be broken into.
44 Therefore, you too must live in a state of readiness, for the Son of Man will come at a time when you are not anticipating Him.
Eschatological Discourse: Lesson from the Faithful and Wicked Servants
Lk. 12:41-48
45 "Who then is the faithful and wise servant whom the master has set over his household to give to them their food at the right time?
46 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing—faithfully serving—upon his return.
47 I assure you that the master will reward such a servant by placing him in charge of all his possessions.
48 But if that servant is corrupt and reasons within himself, ‘My master is taking a long time to return,’
49 and he begins to abuse his fellow servants while indulging himself with drunkards in reckless living,
50 the master of that servant will come on a day he does not anticipate and at an hour he has not perceived,
51 and will cut him in two in severe judgment and assign his share with the hypocrites. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
