The Parable of the Wedding Feast
Lk. 14:15-24
And in response, Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying,
"The kingdom of heaven is compared to a man, a king, who gave a wedding feast for his son.
And he sent his servants to summon those who had been invited to the wedding feast, but they refused the invitation.
Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fattened calves have been slaughtered, and all things are set and ready. Come to the wedding feast."'
But they were indifferent and paid no attention and went away, this one to his own field and that one to his business.
And the rest, having taken hold of his servants, treated them violently and killed them.
And the king was enraged and, having sent his forces, he destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire in judgment.
Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding feast is ready, but those who had been invited were not fit or worthy.
Go, therefore, to the intersections of the highways, and invite as many people as you find to the wedding feast.'
And those servants went out into the roads and gathered together everyone whom they found, both evil and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests reclining at the tables.
But when the king came in to see those guests reclining at the tables, he saw a man there who did not dress in wedding clothes provided by the host.
And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here, not having a wedding garment?' But he was speechless and had no excuse.
Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
Many are invited into the kingdom, but only a few are God’s chosen.”
Paying Taxes to Caesar
Mk. 12:13-17; Lk. 20:20-26
Then the Pharisees went and took counsel on how they might entrap Him in His speech and accuse Him.
And they sent their disciples to Him with the Herodians—political supporters of Herod, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are true and teach the way of God in truth, and You are not influenced by anyone, for You do not consider the external appearance of men and show no partiality.
Tell us, therefore, what You think. Is it lawful to pay tribute—taxes—to Caesar or not?"
But knowing their wicked intent by divine insight, Jesus said, "Hypocrites! Why are you testing Me with insincere flattery?
Show Me the coin for the tax." And they brought to Him a denarius.
And He said to them, "Of whom is this likeness and inscription?"
They said to Him, "Caesar's." Then He said to them, "Therefore, give back to Caesar the things that belong to Caesar, and to God the things that belong to God."
And when they heard this, they marvelled at His wisdom. So they left Him and went away.
Concerning the Resurrection
Mk. 12:18-27; Lk. 20:27-40
On that day, Sadducees, who assert that there is no resurrection and deny the afterlife, approached Him and posed a question to Him,
saying, "Teacher, Moses said in the Law if someone dies without having children, his brother is to marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers among us. And the first after getting married died, and since he had no offspring, he left his wife to his brother according to the Law.
So also the second brother married her and died, and the third, continuing up to the seventh.
At last, the woman also died.
In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her as wife."
But in response, Jesus said to them, "You are misled and in error, since you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God.
For in the resurrection, they neither enter into marriage nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven who do not marry.
Furthermore, concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what has been spoken to you by God, saying,
'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living—they are alive to Him."
And when the crowds heard this, they were struck with amazement at His teaching.
The Great Commandment
Mk. 12:28-34; Lk. 10:25-28
Now when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together.
And one of them, an authority in the Mosaic Law—an expert, posed a question, testing Him,
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"
And He said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.'
This is the great and first commandment in importance.
And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.'
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments—everything in Scripture is summarised by these."
The Davidic Son
Mk. 12:35-37; Lk. 20: 41-44
Now, while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus posed a question to them,
saying, "What do you think concerning the Christ—the Messiah? Whose Son is He?" They said to Him, "David's son."
He said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit—by inspiration—call Him 'Lord,' saying,
'The Lord God said to my Lord the Messiah, "Sit at My right hand in authority,
until I put Your enemies under Your feet as a footstool?"'*
If, therefore, David calls Him 'Lord,' how is He merely his Son?"
And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone venture to ask Him any further questions from that day on.
