The Resurrection
Matt. 28:1-10; Mk. 16:1-8; Jn. 20:1-10
At daybreak on the first day of the week, the women arrived at the tomb carrying the aromatic spices they had made ready.
They found that the stone blocking the tomb's entrance had been rolled aside.
Upon entering, they were unable to locate the body of the Lord Jesus.
As they stood there completely bewildered by this situation, two men dressed in garments that gleamed brilliantly suddenly appeared standing next to them.
Filled with terror, the women dropped to the ground with their faces downwards. The men asked them, "Why are you searching for the Living One in a place of death?
He is not in this place—He has risen! Recall what He told you when He was still with you in Galilee.
He declared that the Son of Man had to be handed over to sinful people, undergo crucifixion, and be raised to life on the third day."
At that moment the women recalled His words.
They hurried back from the tomb and recounted everything to the eleven and to everyone else who was with them.
The ones reporting these events to the apostles were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women in their company.
But the apostles regarded their account as utter foolishness and refused to believe them.
Peter, however, jumped up and raced to the tomb. When he bent down to peer inside, he observed nothing except the linen burial cloths lying by themselves. He departed, deeply puzzled about what had taken place.
On the Road to Emmaus
Mk. 16:12-13
That same day, two of His followers were making their way to a village named Emmaus, located approximately seven miles distant from Jerusalem.
They were engaged in conversation about everything that had occurred.
As they talked and reasoned together, Jesus Himself drew near and joined them on their journey.
Yet their eyes were restrained so they could not recognise His identity.
He asked them, "What matters are you debating with each other as you travel?" They came to a halt, their expressions filled with sadness.
The one called Cleopas responded, "Are You the only person visiting Jerusalem who remains unaware of the events that have unfolded there during these past few days?"
He asked them, "What events?" They replied, "The events involving Jesus of Nazareth, who demonstrated Himself to be a prophet powerful in both action and teaching before God and all the people.
The chief priests and our leaders handed Him over to receive a death sentence, and they had Him crucified.
Yet we were holding onto the hope that He was the one destined to liberate Israel. What is more, this is now the third day since all this took place.
Furthermore, certain women from our group have left us astounded. They visited the tomb at first light this morning
but failed to find His body there. They returned claiming they had witnessed a vision of angels who announced that He is alive!
Some of our companions then went to the tomb and discovered conditions exactly as the women had described, but Him they did not see."
He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how sluggish your hearts are to trust everything the prophets declared!
Was it not ordained that the Messiah should endure these sufferings and then enter into His glory?"
Then, starting with Moses and continuing through all the Prophets, He interpreted for them what was written about Himself throughout all the Scriptures.
As they drew near to the village that was their destination, He gave the impression He intended to continue farther.
But they pressed Him earnestly, saying, "Remain here with us, because evening is approaching and the day has nearly ended." So He entered to lodge with them.
As He reclined at the table with them, He took bread, offered a blessing, broke it into pieces, and distributed it to them.
At that instant their eyes were fully opened, and they recognised Him. But immediately He disappeared from their view.
They said to each other, "Did not our hearts feel as though they were aflame within us as He conversed with us along the road and unfolded the meaning of the Scriptures for us?"
They rose up that very hour and made their way back to Jerusalem, where they located the eleven and their companions assembled together.
These were declaring, "The Lord has genuinely risen! He has made an appearance to Simon!"
Then the two recounted what had transpired on the road and how they had come to recognise Jesus when He broke the bread.
Jesus' Appearance to the Disciples and the Great Commission
Matt. 28:16-20; Mk. 16:14-18; Jn. 20:19-23; Acts 1:6-8
As they were discussing these matters, Jesus Himself took His place among them and said, "Peace to you."
They were shocked and overcome with fear, convinced they were witnessing a ghostly apparition.
He asked them, "Why are you so disturbed? Why do questions of doubt surface in your minds?
Examine My hands and My feet—confirm that it is truly I! Put your hands on Me and verify this for yourselves. A spirit does not possess flesh and bones, which you can plainly see I have."
Having said this, He displayed His hands and feet to them.
While they remained unable to believe because of their overwhelming joy and continued to marvel, He asked, "Have you any food available here?"
They handed Him a portion of cooked fish.
He accepted it and consumed it before their eyes.
Then He told them, "This is what I explained to you while I was still among you: everything recorded about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to reach fulfilment."
Then He opened their understanding so they could comprehend the Scriptures.
He explained to them, "It stands written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from death on the third day,
and that repentance leading to forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, commencing in Jerusalem.
You are witnesses to all these events.
Take notice: I am sending upon you what My Father has promised. Remain in the city until you have been clothed with power from heaven."
The Ascension
Mk. 16:19-20; Acts 1:9-11
Then He led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, and lifting His hands, He pronounced a blessing upon them.
While He was in the act of blessing them, He parted from them and was taken up into heaven.
After worshiping Him, they returned to Jerusalem filled with immense joy.
They spent their time constantly in the temple, offering praise and glory to God.
