Zacchaeus Seeks Jesus
Jesus entered the city of Jericho and was passing through it.
A man named Zacchaeus was there. He was a chief tax collector—a supervisor over other tax collectors—and he was very wealthy.
Zacchaeus wanted to see who Jesus was, but he could not see over the crowd because he was short in stature.
So he ran ahead of the crowd and climbed up into a sycamore-fig tree to see Jesus, since Jesus was going to pass that way.
When Jesus reached that spot, He looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today."
So Zacchaeus came down quickly and welcomed Jesus gladly into his home.
All the people who saw this began muttering, "He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner."
But Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, "Look, Lord! Here and now I am giving half of my possessions to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone out of anything through false accusations, I will pay back four times the amount."
Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this household, because this man, too, is a true son of Abraham by faith.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save those who are lost."
The Parable of the Ten Minas
Matt. 25:14-30
While the people were listening to this encounter, Jesus went on to tell them a parable. He did this because He was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.
Jesus said: "A man of noble birth travelled to a distant country to be appointed as king and then to return home.
Before leaving, he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas—a substantial sum. He instructed them, 'Put this money to work in business until I return.'
But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to declare, 'We do not want this man to reign as king over us.'
Nevertheless, he was appointed king and returned home. Then he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what profit they had gained through trading.
The first servant came and reported, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more minas.'
His master commended him: 'Well done, my good servant! Because you have been trustworthy and faithful in a very small matter, I am putting you in charge of ten cities.'
The second servant came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more minas.'
His master told him, 'You are to be in charge of five cities.'
Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina. I have kept it safely laid away in a piece of cloth.
I was afraid of you, because you are a hard and demanding man. You take out what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.'
His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in and reaping what I did not sow?
Then why did you not put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned, I could have collected it with interest?'
Then he said to those standing nearby, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.'
They protested, 'Sir, he already has ten!'
The master replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has been faithful, more will be given. But from the one who has nothing—who has been unfaithful—even what he has will be taken away.
But those enemies of mine who did not want me to reign as king over them, bring them here and execute them in my presence.'"
The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
Matt. 21:1-11; Mk. 11:1-11; Jn. 12:12-19
After Jesus had said these things, He went on ahead of the group, going up towards Jerusalem.
As He approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples ahead,
saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here to Me.
If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' simply say, 'The Lord needs it.'"
Those who were sent went ahead and found everything just as Jesus had told them.
As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?"
They answered, "The Lord needs it."
They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks on it, and set Jesus on it.
As Jesus rode along, people spread their cloaks on the road as a carpet of honour.
When He came near the place where the road descends from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully praising God in loud voices for all the miracles they had witnessed:
"Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"
Some Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples and make them stop!"
Jesus replied, "I tell you, if they kept silent, the very stones would cry out in proclamation."
Jesus Weeps Over Jerusalem
As Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city spread before Him, He wept over it
and said, "If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes and you cannot see it.
The days will come upon you when your enemies will build siege walls against you. They will encircle you and hem you in on every side.
They will dash you to the ground—you and your children within your walls. They will not leave one stone standing on another, because you did not recognise the time when God visited you."
The Cleansing of the Temple
Matt. 21:12-17; Mk. 11:15-19; Jn. 2:13-22
When Jesus entered the temple courts, He began driving out those who were selling sacrificial animals and exchanging money.
He declared to them, "It is written in Scripture, 'My house shall be a house of prayer,' but you have made it 'a den of robbers.'"
Every day Jesus was teaching in the temple courts. But the chief priests, the teachers of the Law, and the leaders among the people were actively seeking to kill Him.
Yet they could not find any way to accomplish this, because all the people hung on His words and listened to Him intently.
