The Parable of the Lost Sheep
Matt. 18:12-14
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were approaching to hear Jesus.
But the Pharisees and the scribes were complaining, saying, "This person receives sinners and shares meals with them."
So He communicated this parable to them:
"What person among you, possessing a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not abandon the ninety-nine in the wilderness and pursue the lost one until he locates it?
And having found it, he lays it on his shoulders with joy.
And arriving at his home, he summons his friends and neighbours, declaring to them, 'Share in my joy, because I have located my sheep that was lost!'
I declare to you that in this same manner, there will be greater joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous individuals who have no need of repentance."
The Parable of the Lost Coin
"Or what woman, possessing ten silver coins and losing one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and conduct a thorough search until she discovers it?
And having discovered it, she gathers her friends and neighbours, declaring, 'Share in my joy, because I have discovered the coin I had lost!'
In this same manner, I declare to you, joy occurs in the presence of God's angels over one sinner who repents."
The Parable of the Prodigal Son
Jesus went on to say: “There was a man who had two sons.
The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of the inheritance that belongs to me.’ So the father apportioned his estate between them.
A short time later, the younger son gathered everything he owned and left for a far-off land. There he wasted his wealth through irresponsible and self-indulgent living.
When he had exhausted all his resources, a severe famine swept through that region, and he found himself in desperate need.
He went and attached himself to a citizen of that country, who sent him out to his fields to tend pigs.
He was so hungry that he wished he could eat the food given to the pigs, but no one offered him anything.
When he finally came to his right mind, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have food to spare, while I am perishing here from hunger!
I will rise, return to my father, and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.
I am no longer deserving to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’
He got up and went back to his father. While he was still far away, his father saw him and was moved with deep compassion. He ran to him, embraced him, and kissed him warmly.
The son said, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
But the father said to his servants, ‘Hurry! Bring the finest robe and put it on him. Place a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
Bring the fattened calf and slaughter it. Let us celebrate with a feast,
because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.
Meanwhile, the older son was working in the field. As he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.
He called one of the servants and asked what all this meant.
The servant said to him, ‘Your brother has returned, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and well.’
The older son became angry and refused to enter the house. His father came out and urged him to come in.
But he answered his father, ‘Look, I have served you all these years and never ignored your commands. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so that I could celebrate with my friends.
But when this son of yours returned—after wasting your property with immoral living—you slaughtered the fattened calf for him!’
The father said to him, ‘My son, you are always with me, and everything I have belongs to you.
But it was right for us to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and has now been found.’”
