ACT 20
20
Paul in Macedonia and Greece
1 After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, encouraged them, said farewell, and set out for Macedonia.
2 He travelled through those regions, speaking many words of encouragement to the believers, and arrived in Greece,
3 where he spent three months. Because the Jews had formed a plot against him as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.
4 Accompanying him were Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.
5 These men went ahead and were waiting for us at Troas.
6 We sailed from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread and joined them five days later in Troas, where we stayed seven days.
Eutychus Raised
7 On the first day of the week, when we had gathered to break bread, Paul spoke to them. Since he was planning to leave the next day, he extended his message until midnight.
8 There were many lamps in the upper room where we had assembled.
9 A young man named Eutychus was sitting in a window. As Paul continued speaking, Eutychus sank into a deep sleep. Overcome by sleep, he fell from the third story and was picked up dead.
10 Paul went down, threw himself on him, and embracing him said, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him."
11 After going back upstairs, breaking bread, and eating, Paul talked with them for a considerable time, until dawn. Then he departed.
12 They brought the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.
13 We went ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, intending to take Paul aboard there. He had arranged this because he intended to travel by land.
14 When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went to Mitylene.
15 Sailing from there, we arrived off Chios the next day. The following day we crossed over to Samos, and the day after that we came to Miletus.
16 Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in Asia, because he was hurrying to be in Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of Pentecost.
Paul's Farewell Speech to the Ephesian Elders
17 From Miletus, Paul sent word to Ephesus and summoned the elders of the church.
18 When they came to him, he said to them: "You know how I lived among you the entire time from the first day I set foot in Asia,
19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears, enduring the trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews.
20 You know that I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was beneficial, teaching you publicly and from house to house,
21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks about repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus.
22 And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,
23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that chains and afflictions await me.
24 However, I do not consider my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus—to testify to the gospel of God's grace.
25 Now I know that none of you among whom I went about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again.
26 Therefore I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of all,
27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the entire counsel of God.
28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to the entire flock, among which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.
29 I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.
30 Even from your own number, men will arise speaking twisted things to draw away the disciples after them.
31 Therefore be vigilant, remembering that for three years I never ceased admonishing each one night and day with tears.
32 And now I commend you to God and to the message of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified.
33 I have coveted no one's silver or gold or clothing.
34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to those who were with me.
35 In every way I showed you that by working hard like this, we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, 'There is greater blessing in giving than in receiving.'"
36 After he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with all of them.
37 They all began weeping loudly and embraced Paul, kissing him repeatedly.
38 They were grieving most of all because of his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.
