4
1Syne was Jesus led up o’ the Spirit intil the wilderness, to be temp’et o’ the deevil.
2An’ whan he had fastet forty days an’ forty nichts, he was afterwards an hunger’t.
3An’ whan the temp’er cam’ til him, he said, Gif thou be the Son o’ God, commaun’ that thae stanes be made bread.
4But he answer’t an’ said, It is written, Man sallna live by bread alane, but by ilka word that gaeth out o’ the mouth o’ God.
5Syne the deevil taketh him up intil the haly city, an’ setteth him on a pinnacle o’ the temple,
6An’ saith until him, Gif thou be the Son o’ God, cast thysel doun; for it is written, He sall gie his angels charge anent thee; an’ in their han’s they sall bear thee up, lest at ony time thou dash thy fit agayne a stane.
7Jesus said until him, It is written again, Thou salltna temp’ the Lord thy God.
8Again, the deevil taketh him up intil an unco high mountain, an’ shaweth him a’ the kingdoms o’ the warld, an’ the glory o’ them;
9An’ saith until him, A’ thae things will I gie thee, gif thou wilt fa’ doun an’ worship me.
10Syne saith Jesus until him, Get thee behint me, Satan; for it is written, Thou sallt worship the Lord thy God, an’ him alane sallt thou serve.
11Syne the deevil leaveth him; an’, behald, angels cam’ an’ minister’t until him.
12Now whan Jesus had hear’t that John was coost intil prison, he gaed awa intil Galilee.
13An’ leavin’ Nazareth, he cam’ an’ dwalt in Capernaum, whilk is upon the sea‐coast, in the marches o’ Zabulon an’ Nephthalim;
14That it micht be fulfillet whilk was spoken by Esaias the prophet, sayin’,
15The lan’ o’ Zabulon, an’ the lan’ o’ Nephthalim, by the way o’ the sea ayont Jordan in Galilee o’ the Gentiles;
16The folk wha sat in mirkness saw great licht; an’ til thae wha sat in the region an’ skaddow o’ death licht is sprung up.
17Frae that time Jesus begoude to preach an’ to say, Repent; for the kingdom o’ heaven is at han’.
18An’ Jesus, gangin’ by the sea o’ Galilee, saw twa brithren, Simon ca’d Peter, an’ Andrew his brither, castin’ a net intil the sea, (for they were fishers.)
19An’ he saith until them, Follow me, an’ I will mak’ ye fishers o’ men.
20An’ they straughtway quat their nets, an’ followet him.
21An’ gangin’ on frae there, he saw ither twa brithren, James the son o’ Zebedee, an’ John his brither, in a ship wi’ Zebedee their father, mendin’ their nets; an’ he ca’d them.
22An’ they straughtway quat the ship an’ their father, an’ followet him.
23An’ Jesus gaed about a’ Galilee, teachin’ in their synagogues, an’ preachin’ the gospel o’ the kingdom, an’ healin’ a’ kin’kind o’ ailment an’ disease amang the folk.
24An’ his fame gaed throughout a’ Syria; an’ they broucht until him a’ folk wha were ill, an’ thae wha were taen wi’ sindry diseases an’ torments, an’ thae wha were possesset wi’ deevils, an’ thae wha were lunatic, an’ thae wha had the palsy; an’ he healet them.
25An’ there followet him a meikle thrang o’ folk frae Galilee, an’ frae Decapolis, an’ frae Jerusalem, an’ frae Judea, an’ frae ayont Jordan.
