1In thae days cam’ John the Baptist, preachin’ in the wilderness o’ Judea,
2An’ sayin’, Repent ye; for the kingdom o’ heaven is at han’.
3For this is he wha was spoken o’ by the prophet Esaias, sayin’, The voice o’ ane cryin’ in the wilderness, Mak’ ready the way o’ the Lord, mak’ his paths straught.
4An’ the same John had his claithin’ o’ camel’s hair, an’ a leather girdin’ about his loins; an’ his meat was locusts an’ wild hiney.
5Syne gaed out til him Jerusalem, an’ a’ Judea, an’ a’ the kintra roun’ about Jordan,
6An’ were baptizet o’ him in Jordan, confessin’ their sins.
7But whan he saw mony o’ the Pharisees an’ Sadducees come til his baptism, he said until them, O affspring o’ vipers, wha hath warnet you to flee frae the wrath to come?
8Bring furth therefore fruits fittin’ for repentance:
9An’ dinna think to say until yoursels, We hae Abraham til our father; for I say until you, that God is able o’ thae stanes to raise up childer until Abraham.
10An’ now alsua the axe is laid until the root o’ the trees; therefore ilka tree whilk dothna bring furth guid fruit is hewet doun, an’ coost intil the fire.
11I indeed baptize you wi’ water until repentance: but he wha cometh after me is michtier nor me, whase shoon I amna wordy to bear; he sall baptize you wi’ the Haly Ghaist, an’ wi’ fire:
12Whase fan is in his han’, an’ he will throughly purge his floor, an’ gather his wheat intil the girnall; but he will burn up the caff wi’ unslockenable fire.
13Syne cometh Jesus frae Galilee til Jordan until John to be baptizet o’ him.
14But John forbade him, sayin’, I hae need to be baptizet o’ thee, an’ comest thou til me?
15An’ Jesus answerin’ said until him, Let it be sae now; for sae it becometh us to fulfil a’ richteousness. Syne he let him.
16An’ Jesus, when he was baptizet, gaed up straughtway out o’ the water; an’, lo, the heavens were openet until him, an’ he saw the Spirit o’ God comin’ doun like a doo, an’ lichtin’ upon him:
17An’, lo, a voice frae heaven, sayin’, This is my belovet Son, in wham I am weel pleaset.
