2 Samuel 9

David Is Kind to Saul’s Family
1David asked, “Is there anyone still left in Saul’s family? I want to show kindness to this person. I want to do it for Jonathan.”
2There was a servant named Ziba from Saul’s family. David’s servants called Ziba to David. King David said to Ziba, “Are you Ziba?”
Ziba said, “Yes, I am your servant Ziba.”
3The king said, “Is there anyone left in Saul’s family? I want to show God’s kindness to this person.”
Ziba said to King David, “Jonathan has a son still living. He is crippled in both feet.”
4The king said to Ziba, “Where is this son?”
Ziba said to the king, “He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.”
5Then King David sent some of his officers to Lo Debar to bring Jonathan’s son from the house of Makir son of Ammiel. 6Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth came to David and bowed with his face low to the floor.
David said, “Mephibosheth?”
Mephibosheth said, “Yes sir, it is I, your servant Mephibosheth.”
7David said to Mephibosheth, “Don’t be afraid. I will be kind to you because of your father Jonathan. I will give back to you all the land of your grandfather Saul. And you will always be able to eat at my table.”
8Mephibosheth bowed to David again and he said, “I am no better than a dead dog, but you are being very kind to me.”
9Then King David called Saul’s servant Ziba and said, “I have given Saul’s family and everything he owns to your master’s grandson, Mephibosheth. 10You will farm the land for Mephibosheth. Your sons and servants will do this for him. You will harvest the crops. Then your master’s grandson will have plenty of food to eat, but Mephibosheth will always be allowed to eat at my table.”
Ziba had 15 sons and 20 servants. 11He said to King David, “I am your servant. I will do everything that my lord the king commands.”
So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons. 12Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica. All the people in Ziba’s family became Mephibosheth’s servants. 13Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem. He was crippled in both feet, and every day he ate at the king’s table.

David’s Kindness to Mephibosheth
1Now David said, “Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may #1 Sam. 30:14; 1 Kin. 1:38show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
2And there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was #1 Sam. 18:3; 20:14–16; 2 Sam. 21:7; (Prov. 27:10)Ziba. So when they had called him to David, the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?”
He said, “At your service!”
3Then the king said, “Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I may show #2 Sam. 16:1–4; 19:17, 29the kindness of God?”
And Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is #1 Sam. 20:14lame in his feet.”
4So the king said to him, “Where is he?”
And Ziba said to the king, “Indeed he is in the house of #2 Sam. 4:4Machir the son of Ammiel, in Lo Debar.”
5Then King David sent and brought him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo Debar.
6Now when #2 Sam. 17:27–29Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, had come to David, he fell on his face and prostrated himself. Then David said, “Mephibosheth?”
And he answered, “Here is your servant!”
7So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.”
8Then he bowed himself, and said, “What is your servant, that you should look upon such #2 Sam. 16:4; 19:24–30a dead dog as I?”
9And the king called to Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, #2 Sam. 16:9“I have given to your master’s son all that belonged to Saul and to all his house. 10You therefore, and your sons and your servants, shall work the land for him, and you shall bring in the harvest, that your master’s son may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s son #2 Sam. 16:4; 19:29shall eat bread at my table always.” Now Ziba had #2 Sam. 9:7, 11, 13; 19:28fifteen sons and twenty servants.
11Then Ziba said to the king, “According to all that my lord the king has commanded his servant, so will your servant do.”
“As for Mephibosheth,” said the king, “he shall eat at my table like one of the king’s sons.” 12Mephibosheth had a young son #2 Sam. 19:17whose name was Micha. And all who dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants of Mephibosheth. 13So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem, #1 Chr. 8:34for he ate continually at the king’s table. And he #2 Sam. 9:7, 10, 11; 1 Kin. 2:7; 2 Kin. 25:29was lame in both his feet.
