Obadiah 1

Edom's Pride and Punishment

1 # Is 34.5-17; 63.1-6; Jr 49.7-22; Ez 25.12-14; 35.1-15; Am 1.11,12; Ml 1.2-5. The Lord God gave Obadiah

a message#1 message: Or “vision.” about Edom,

and this is what we heard:

“I, the Lord, have sent

a messenger

with orders for the nations

to attack Edom.”

2The Lord said to Edom:

I will make you the weakest

and most despised nation.

3You live in a mountain fortress,#3 mountain fortress: The Hebrew text has “rocky cliff,” which sounds like “Sela,” the capital of Edom, a fortress city built on a mountain.

because your pride

makes you feel safe from attack,

but you are mistaken.

4I will still bring you down,

even if you fly higher

than an eagle

or nest among the stars.

I, the Lord, have spoken!

5If thieves break in at night,

they steal

only what they want.

And people who harvest grapes

always leave some unpicked.

But, Edom, you are doomed!

6Everything you treasure most

will be taken from you.

7Your allies can't be trusted.

They will force you out

of your own country.

And your best friends

will trick and trap you,

even before you know it.

8Edom, when this happens,

I, the Lord, will destroy

all your marvelous wisdom.

9Warriors from the city of Teman#9 Teman: A famous city in Edom.

will be terrified,

and you descendants of Esau#9 descendants of Esau: The people of Edom were descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob (Israel).

will be wiped out.

The Lord Condemns Edom's Cruelty

10You were cruel to your relatives,

the descendants of Jacob.#10 descendants of Jacob: Jacob and Esau were brothers (see the note on Esau at verse 9).

Now you will be destroyed,

disgraced forever.

11You stood there and watched

as foreigners entered Jerusalem

and took what they wanted.

In fact, you were no better

than those foreigners.

12Why did you celebrate

when such a dreadful disaster

struck your relatives?

Why were you so pleased

when everyone in Judah

was suffering?

13They are my people,

and you were cruel to them.

You went through their towns,

sneering and stealing

whatever was left.

14In their time of torment,

you ambushed refugees

and handed them over

to their attackers.

The Lord Will Judge the Nations

15The day is coming

when I, the Lord,

will judge the nations.

And, Edom, you will pay in full

for what you have done.

16I forced the people of Judah#16 I forced … Judah: Or “I will force the people of Edom.”

to drink the wine of my anger

on my sacred mountain.

Soon the neighboring nations

must drink their fill—

then vanish without a trace.

Victory for Israel

17The Lord's people who escape

will go to Mount Zion,

and it will be holy.

Then Jacob's descendants

will capture the land of those

who took their land.

18Israel#18 Israel: Hebrew “The descendants of Jacob and of Joseph.” will be a fire,

and Edom will be straw

going up in flames.

The Lord has spoken!

19The people of Israel

who live in the Southern Desert

will take the land of Edom.

Those who live in the hills

will capture Philistia,

Ephraim, and Samaria.

And the tribe of Benjamin

will conquer Gilead.

20Those who return from captivity

will control Phoenicia

as far as Zarephath.#20 Those who return … Zarephath: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.

Captives from Jerusalem

who were taken to Sepharad#20 Sepharad: Possibly the city of Sardis, the capital of Lydia, a country north and west of Media. This would refer to those captives from Judah who had been taken beyond the kingdom of Babylonia.

will capture the towns

of the Southern Desert.

21Those the Lord has saved

will live on Mount Zion

and rule over Edom.#21 Those the Lord … Edom: Or “Leaders on (from) Mount Zion will save the people and rule over Edom.”

Then the kingdom will belong

to the Lord.

Obadias 1

1Ang aklat na ito ay naglalaman ng pangitaing ibinigay ng Panginoong Yahweh kay Propeta Obadias tungkol sa Edom.

Paparusahan ni Yahweh ang Edom

May narinig kaming ulat buhat sa Panginoong Yahweh;

may isang sugo na ipinadala sa mga bansa:

“Humanda kayo at ang Edom ay salakayin!”

2Sinabi ni Yahweh sa Edom,

“Gagawin kitang pinakamahinang bansa,

at kamumuhian ka ng lahat ng mga tao.

3Nilinlang ka ng iyong kayabangan;

dahil ang kapitolyo mo'y nakatayo sa batong buháy;

dahil ang tahanan mo'y nasa matataas na kabundukan.

Kaya't sinasabi mo,

‘Sinong makakapagpabagsak sa akin?’”

4Kasintaas man ng pugad ng agila ang iyong bahay,

o maging ang mga bituin man ay iyong kapantay,

hahatakin kitang pababa at ikaw ay babagsak.

5“Kung sa gabi'y dumating ang magnanakaw,

ang kinukuha lamang nila'y ang kanilang magustuhan.

Kapag ang mga tao'y namimitas ng ubas,

kahit kaunting bunga'y nagtitira sila.

Ngunit ang mga kaaway mo'y walang ititira kahit isa.

6O lahi ni Esau, ang yaman mo'y sasamsamin;

at ang lahat ng sa iyo'y kukuhanin.

7Nilinlang ka ng iyong mga kapanalig,

itinaboy ka mula sa iyong lupain.

Nasasakop ka na ngayon ng iyong mga kakampi.

Ang iyong mga kaibigang noo'y kasalo, ngayo'y naglagay ng patibong para sa iyo;

at kanila pang sinasabi, ‘Nasaan na ang kanyang katusuhan?’”

8Sinabi ni Yahweh:

“Darating ang araw na paparusahan ko ang Edom,

lilipulin ko ang kanyang mga matatalinong tao,

at ang kaalaman nila'y aking papawiin.

9Mga mandirigma ng Teman ay pawang nasisindak,

at ang mga kawal ng Edom ay malilipol na lahat.

Bakit Pinarusahan ang Edom

10“Dahil sa ginawa mong karahasan sa angkan ng kapatid mong si Jacob,

sa kahihiya'y malalagay ka,

at mahihiwalay sa akin magpakailanman.

11Pinanood mo lamang sila,

nang araw na pasukin ng mga kaaway.

Kasinsama ka ng mga dayuhan

na nananamsam at naghahati-hati

sa kayamanan ng Jerusalem na kanilang tinangay.

12Hindi mo dapat ikinatuwa ang#1:12 Hindi mo dapat ikinatuwa ang: Sa Hebreo ay Ngunit huwag kang matutuwa sa. kapahamakang sinapit

ng iyong mga kapatid sa lupain ng Juda.

Hindi ka dapat nagalak sa araw ng kanilang pagkawasak;

hindi ka dapat naging palalo sa araw ng kanilang kasawian.

13Hindi mo dapat pinasok ang lunsod ng aking bayan,

ni pinagtawanan ang kanilang kasawian.

At sinamsam mo pa ang kanilang kayamanan

sa panahon ng kanilang kapahamakan.

15“Malapit na ang araw ng aking paghatol sa lahat ng bansa,” sabi ni Yahweh.

“Ang ginawa mo Edom, sa iyo'y gagawin din;

ang ibinigay mo sa iba, siya mo ring tatanggapin.

16Sa banal na bundok ko ay nalasap ng aking bayan

ang mapait na alak na sa kanila'y kaparusahan.

Ngunit ang mga bayan na dito'y nakapaligid,

higit na parusa ang kanilang matitikman;

iinom sila nito at lubos na mapaparam.

Ang Tagumpay ng Israel

17“Ngunit sa Bundok Zion ay may ilang makakatakas,

at ang bundok na ito'y magiging banal na dako.

Muling aariin ng lahi ni Jacob

ang lupaing sa kanila ay ipinagkaloob.

18At maglalagablab naman ang lahi ni Jose.

Lilipulin nila ang lahi ni Esau,

at susunugin ito na parang dayami.

Walang matitira isa man sa kanila.

Akong si Yahweh ang maysabi nito.

19“Sasakupin ng mga taga-Negeb ang Bundok ng Edom.

Sasakupin ng mga nasa kapatagan ang lupain ng mga Filisteo.

Makukuha nila ang lupain ng Efraim at Samaria.

Ang Gilead nama'y sasakupin ng lahi ni Benjamin.

20Magbabalik ang hukbong binubuo ng mga dinalang-bihag, sila na nagmula sa hilagang Israel.

Sila ang sasakop sa lupain ng Fenicia hanggang sa Zarefat doon sa hilaga.

Ang mga taga-Jerusalem na itinapon sa Sardis#1:20 Sardis: Sa ibang manuskrito'y Sefarad.

ang siya namang sasakop sa mga lunsod sa timog ng Juda.

21Ang matagumpay na hukbo ng Jerusalem,

sasalakay sa Edom at doo'y mamamahala.

Si Yahweh mismo ang doo'y maghahari.”
