Mary Anoints Jesus

Lk 7.37–39; Jn 11.55 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2#Lk 10.38There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him. 3#Mk 14.3; Jn 11.2Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’s feet, and wiped them#12.3 Gk his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” 6(He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7#Jn 19.40Jesus said, “Leave her alone. The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well, 11#v 18; Jn 11.45since it was on account of him that many of the Jews were deserting and were believing in Jesus.
Jesus’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
12The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13#Ps 118.25, 26; Jn 1.49So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord—
the King of Israel!”
14Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:

“Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion.
Look, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt!”

Mk 9.32; Jn 2.22; 7.39; 14.26 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written of him and had been done to him. 17So the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify.#12.17 Other ancient authorities read with him began to testify that he had called…from the dead 18It was also because they heard that he had performed this sign that the crowd went to meet him. 19#Jn 11.48The Pharisees then said to one another, “You see, you can do nothing. Look, the world has gone after him!”
Some Greeks Wish to See Jesus

Jn 7.35; Acts 11.20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip went and told Andrew, then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23#Mk 12.24; 14.35, 41; Jn 13.1, 32; 17.1; 1 Cor 15.36Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain, but if it dies it bears much fruit. 25#Mt 10.39; Mk 8.35; Lk 9.24; 14.26Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26#Jn 14.3; 17.24; 1 Thess 4.17Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Jesus Speaks about His Death

No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28#Mt 3.17; 17.5; Mk 1.11; 9.7; Lk 3.22; 9.35Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. The Unbelief of the People
After Jesus had said this, he departed and hid from them. 37Although he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. 38#Isa 53.1; Rom 10.16This was to fulfill the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
“Lord, who has believed our message,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39And so they could not believe, because Isaiah also said,

and hardened their heart,
so that they might not look with their eyes
and understand with their heart and turn—
and I would heal them.”

Isaiah said this because#12.41 Other ancient witnesses read when he saw his glory and spoke about him. 42#Jn 7.13, 48; 9.22Nevertheless many, even of the authorities, believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue, 43for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God.
