1 Peter 2
The Living Stone and a Chosen People
1 # Eph 4.22; Jas 1.21; 4.11 Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. 2#Mk 10.15; 1 Cor 3.2Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— 3#Titus 3.4; Heb 6.5if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.#2.3 Or kind
4Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5#Phil 4.18; Heb 13.15like living stones let yourselves be built#2.5 Or you yourselves are being built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6#Isa 28.16; Eph 2.20For it stands in scripture:
“See, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
7 # Ps 118.22; Mt 21.42 This honor, then, is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,#2.7 Other ancient authorities read obey
“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the very head of the corner,”
8 # Isa 8.14; Rom 9.22; 1 Cor 1.23 and
“A stone that makes them stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
9 # Deut 10.15; Acts 26.18 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,#2.9 Gk a people for his possession in order that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
10 # Hos 1.9, 10 Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy.
Live as Servants of God
11 # Ps 39.12; Rom 12.1; Gal 5.16; Jas 4.1 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul.#2.11 Or one’s life 12#Mt 5.16; Phil 2.15; 1 Pet 3.16Conduct yourselves honorably among the gentiles, so that, though they malign you as evildoers, they may see your honorable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge.#2.12 Gk God on the day of visitation
13 # Rom 13.1 For the Lord’s sake be subject to every human authority,#2.13 Or every authority ordained for humans whether to the emperor as supreme 14or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. 15For it is God’s will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. 16#1 Cor 7.22; Gal 5.1As servants of God, live as free people, yet do not use your freedom as a pretext for evil. 17#Rom 12.10; Heb 13.1Honor everyone. Love the family of believers.#2.17 Gk Love the brotherhood Fear God. Honor the emperor.
The Example of Christ’s Suffering
18Slaves, be subject to your masters with all respect,#2.18 Or fear not only those who are good and gentle but also those who are dishonest. 19For it is a commendable thing if, being aware of God, a person endures pain while suffering unjustly. 20#1 Pet 3.17If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do good and suffer for it, this is a commendable thing before God. 21#Mt 16.24; Acts 14.22For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps.
22“He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth.”
23 # Isa 53.7; Lk 23.46; Heb 12.3 When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 24#Isa 53.5; Rom 6.2; Heb 9.28He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross,#2.24 Or carried up our sins in his body to the tree so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds#2.24 Gk bruise you have been healed. 25#Isa 53.6; 1 Pet 5.4For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.#2.25 Or lives
