53
The Suffering Servant
1Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?
2For He grew up before Him like a tender #53:2 Lit sucklingshoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should desire Him.
3He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of #53:3 Or painssorrows and acquainted with #53:3 Or sicknessgrief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4¶Surely our #53:4 Or sicknessgriefs He Himself #53:4 Or carriedbore,
And our #53:4 Or painssorrows He #53:4 Or borecarried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
# 53:4 Or Struck down by Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5But He was #53:5 Or woundedpierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our peace fell upon Him,
And by His #53:5 Lit woundwounds we are healed.
6All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But Yahweh has caused the iniquity of us all
To #53:6 Lit encounter Himfall on Him.
7¶He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
8By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of #53:8 Or lifethe living,
That for the transgression of my people, striking was due to Him?
9So His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
10¶But #53:10 Or it was the desire of Yahweh, cf. Ps 40:6Yahweh was pleased
To crush Him, #53:10 Or He put Him to grief; lit He made Him sickputting Him to grief;
If You would place His soul as a guilt offering,
He will see His seed,
He will prolong His days,
And the #53:10 Or will of, desire of; cf. Ps 40:6good pleasure of Yahweh will succeed in His hand.
11As a result of the #53:11 Or toilsome laboranguish of His soul,
He will see #53:11 Or lightit and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will #53:11 Or declare the many righteous, cf. 53:11a; 5:23justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
12Therefore, I will divide for Him a portion with the many,
And He will divide the spoil with the strong;
Because He poured out His soul to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself #53:12 Or carriedbore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.
