Dani’ĕl (Daniel) 11
11
1“And in the first year of Dareyawesh the Mede, I myself stood up to support and protect him.
2“And now I declare the truth to you: See, three more sovereigns are to arise in Persia, and the fourth is to become far richer than them all. And by his power, through his riches, he stirs up all against the rulership of Greece.
3“And a mighty sovereign shall arise, and he shall rule with great authority, and do as he pleases.
4“But when he has arisen, his rule shall be broken up and divided toward the four winds of the heavens, but not among his descendants nor according to his authority with which he ruled, because his rule shall be uprooted, even for others besides these.
5“And a sovereign of the South shall become strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong over him and shall rule – his rule shall be a great rule.
6“And at the end of years they shall join themselves together, and a daughter of the sovereign of the South shall come to the sovereign of the North to make an alliance. But she shall not retain the strength of her power, nor would he or his power stand. And she shall be given up, with those who brought her, and he who brought her forth, and he who supported her in those times.
7“But from a branch of her roots one shall arise in his place, and he shall come into the defence and come into a stronghold of the sovereign of the North, and shall act against them, and shall prevail,
8and also their mighty ones, with their princes and their precious utensils of silver and gold he shall seize and bring to Mitsrayim. And he shall stand more years than the sovereign of the North.
9“Then he shall enter the reign of the sovereign of the South, but shall return to his own land.
10“But his sons shall stir themselves up, and assemble a great army. And he shall certainly come and overflow and pass through, then return to his stronghold, and be stirred up.
11“Then the sovereign of the South shall be enraged and go out to fight with him, with the sovereign of the North, who shall raise a large army. But the army shall be given into the hand of his enemy,
12and he shall capture the army, his heart being exalted. And he shall cause tens of thousands to fall, but not prevail.
13“And the sovereign of the North shall return and raise an army greater than the former, and certainly come at the end of some years with a great army and much supplies.
14“And in those times many shall rise up against the sovereign of the South, while some violent ones among your people exalt themselves to establish the vision, but they shall stumble.
15“Then the sovereign of the North shall come in and build a siege mound, and capture a city of strongholds. And the arms of the South shall not stand, nor his choice people, for there is no strength to stand.
16“So his opponent shall do as he pleases – with no one standing against him – and stand in the Splendid Land with destruction in his hand.
17“And he shall set his face to enter with the strength of his entire rule, and make an alliance with him. And he shall do so, and give him the daughter of women to corrupt her. But she shall not stand, neither be for him.
18“Then he shall turn his face to the coastlands and capture many. But a ruler shall bring the reproach against them to an end. And with the reproach removed, he shall turn back on him.
19“Then he shall turn his face toward the strongholds of his own land, but shall stumble and fall, and not be found.
20“And in his place one shall stand up who imposes taxes on the adorned city of the rule, but within a few days he is destroyed, but not in wrath or in battle.
21“And in his place shall arise a despised one, to whom they shall not give the excellency of the rule. But he shall come in peaceably, and seize the rule by flatteries.
22“And the arms of the flood shall be swept away from before him and be broken, and also the prince of the covenant.
23“And after they joined him, he shall work deceit, and shall come up and become strong with a small nation.
24“He shall enter peaceably, even into the richest places of the province, and do what his fathers have not done, nor his forefathers: distribute among them plunder and spoil and supplies, and devise his plots against the strongholds, but only for a time.
25“And he shall stir up his power and his heart against the sovereign of the South with a great army, and the sovereign of the South shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army, but not stand, for they shall devise plots against him.
26“And those who have been eating his food shall destroy him, and his army be swept away, and many fall down slain.
27“And both these sovereigns’ hearts are to do evil, and speak lies at the same table, but not prosper, for the end is still for an appointed time.
28“Then he shall return to his land with much supplies, and his heart be against the set-apart covenant. And he shall act, and shall return to his land.
29“At the appointed time he shall return and go toward the south, but it shall not be like the former or the latter.
30“For ships from Kittim shall come against him, and he shall lose heart, and shall return in rage against the set-apart covenant, and shall act, and shall return and consider those who forsake the set-apart covenant.
31“And strong ones shall arise from him and profane the set-apart place, the stronghold, and shall take away that which is continual, and set up the abomination that lays waste.#See Dan. 8:13; Dan. 9:27; Mat. 24:15
32“And by flatteries he shall profane those who do wrong against the covenant, but the people who know their Elohim shall be strong, and shall act.
33“And those of the people who have insight shall give understanding to many. And they shall stumble by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering, for days.
34“And when they stumble, they shall be helped, a little help, but many shall join them, by flatteries.
35“And some of those who have insight shall stumble, to refine them, and to cleanse them, and to make them white, until the time of the end, for it is still for an appointed time.
36“And the sovereign shall do as he pleases, and exalt himself and show himself to be great above every mighty one, and speak incredible matters against the Ěl of mighty ones, and shall prosper until the wrath has been accomplished – for what has been decreed shall be done –
37and have no regard for the mighty ones of his fathers nor for the desire of women, nor have regard for any mighty one, but exalt himself above them all.
38“But in his place he shall give esteem to a mighty one of strongholds. And to a mighty one which his fathers did not know he shall give esteem with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts.
39“And he shall act against the strongest strongholds with a foreign mighty one, which he shall acknowledge. He shall increase in esteem and cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain.
40“At the time of the end the sovereign of the South shall push at him, and the sovereign of the North rush against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships. And he shall enter the lands, and shall overflow and pass over,
41and shall enter the Splendid Land, and many shall stumble, but these escape from his hand: Eḏom, and Mo’aḇ, and the chief of the sons of Ammon.
42“And he shall stretch out his hand against the lands, and the land of Mitsrayim shall not escape.
43“And he shall rule over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the riches of Mitsrayim, and Libyans and Kushites shall be at his steps.
44“Then reports from the east and the north shall disturb him, and he shall go out with great wrath to destroy and put many under the ban,
45and he shall pitch the tents of his palace between the seas and the splendid set-apart mountain, but shall come to his end with none to help him.

Daniel 11
11
1You also need to know that I protected and helped Darius the Mede#11.1 Darius the Mede: See 5.30. in his first year as king.
The Angel's Message to Daniel
Part One: The Four Kings and Their Successors
2What I am going to tell you is certain to happen. Four kings will rule Persia, one after the other, but the fourth one will become much richer than the others. In fact, his wealth will make him so powerful that he will turn everyone against the kingdom of Greece. 3Then a mighty king will come to power and will be able to do whatever he pleases. 4But suddenly his kingdom will be crushed and scattered to the four corners of the earth, where four more kingdoms will rise. But these won't be ruled by his descendants or be as powerful as his kingdom.
5The king of the south will grow powerful. Then one of his generals will rebel and will rule an even larger kingdom. 6Years later the southern kingdom and the northern kingdom will make a treaty, and the daughter of the king of the south will marry the king of the north. But she will lose her power. Then she, her husband, their child,#11.6 their child: One Hebrew manuscript and two ancient translations; most Hebrew manuscripts “her father.” and the servants who came with her will all be killed.
After this, 7one of her relatives will become the ruler of the southern kingdom. He will attack the army of the northern kingdom and capture its fortresses. 8Then he will carry their idols to Egypt, together with their precious treasures of silver and gold, but it will be a long time before he attacks the northern kingdom again. Some years later 9the king of the north will invade the southern kingdom, but he will be forced back to his own country.
10The sons of the king of the north will gather a huge army that will sweep down like a roaring flood, reaching all the way to the fortress of the southern kingdom. 11#3 Macc 1.1. But this will make the king of the south angry, and he will defeat this large army from the north. 12The king of the south will feel proud because of the many thousands he has killed. But his victories won't last long, 13because the king of the north will gather a larger and more powerful army than ever before. Then in a few years, he will start invading other countries.
14At this time many of your own people will try to make this vision come true by rebelling against the king of the south, but their rebellion will fail. 15Then the army from the north will surround and capture a fortress in the south, and not even the most experienced troops of the southern kingdom will be able to make them retreat. 16The king who invaded from the north will do as he pleases, and he will even capture and destroy the holy land.#11.16 the holy land: See the note at 8.9. 17In fact, he will decide to invade the south with his entire army. Then he will attempt to make peace by giving the king of the south a bride from the northern kingdom, but this won't be successful.
18Afterwards, this proud king of the north will invade and conquer many of the nations along the coast, but a military leader will defeat him and make him lose his pride. 19He will retreat to his fortresses in his own country, but on the way he will be defeated and never again be seen.
20The next king of the north will try to collect taxes for the glory of his kingdom. However, he will come to a sudden end in some mysterious way, instead of in battle or because of someone's anger.
Part Two: The Evil King from the North
21The successor of this king of the north will be a worthless nobody, who doesn't even come from a royal family. He will suddenly appear and gain control of the kingdom by treachery. 22Then he will destroy armies and remove God's chosen high priest. 23He will make a treaty, but he will be deceitful and break it, even though he has only a few followers. 24Without warning, he will successfully invade a wealthy province, which is something his ancestors never did. Then he will divide among his followers all of its treasures and property. But none of this will last very long.
25He will gather a large and powerful army, and with great courage he will attack the king of the south. The king of the south will meet him with a much stronger army, but he will lose the battle, because he will be betrayed 26by members of the royal court. He will be ruined, and most of his army will be slaughtered.
27The two kings will meet around a table and tell evil lies to each other. But their plans will fail, because God has already decided what will happen. 28Then the king of the north will return to his country with great treasures. But on the way, he will attack the religion of God's people and do whatever else he pleases.
29At the time God has decided, the king of the north will invade the southern kingdom again, but this time, things will be different. 30#2 Macc 5.11. Ships from the west will come to attack him, and he will be discouraged. Then he will start back to his own country and take out his anger on the religion of God's faithful people, while showing kindness to those who are unfaithful. 31#Dn 9.27; 12.11; Mt 24.15; Mk 13.14. He will send troops to pollute the temple and the fortress, and he will stop the daily sacrifices. Then he will set up that “Horrible Thing” that causes destruction. 32The king will use deceit to win followers from those who are unfaithful to God, but those who remain faithful will do everything possible to oppose him.
33Wise leaders will instruct many of the people. But for a while, some of these leaders will either be killed with swords or burned alive, or else robbed of their possessions and thrown into prison. 34They will receive only a little help in their time of trouble, and many of their followers will be treacherous. 35Some of those who are wise will suffer, so that God will make them pure and acceptable until the end, which will still come at the time he has decided.
36 #
2 Th 2.3,4;
Rev 13.5,6. This king will do as he pleases. He will proudly claim to be greater than any god and will insult the only true God. Indeed, he will be successful until God is no longer angry with his people. 37This king will reject the gods his ancestors worshiped and the god preferred by women.#11.37 god preferred by women: Perhaps Tammuz or Adonis, which were popular among the women of that time. In fact, he will put himself above all gods 38and worship only the so-called god of fortresses, who was unknown to his ancestors. And he will honor it with gold, silver, precious stones, and other costly gifts. 39With the help of this foreign god, he will capture the strongest fortresses. Everyone who worships this god will be put in a position of power and rewarded with wealth and land.
Part Three: The Time of the End
40At the time of the end, the king of the south will attack the kingdom of the north. But its king will rush out like a storm with war chariots, cavalry, and many ships. Indeed, his forces will flood one country after another, 41and when they reach the holy land,#11.41 the holy land: See the note at 8.9. tens of thousands will be killed. But the countries of Edom and Moab and the ruler of Ammon#11.41 the ruler of Ammon: Or “what is left of Ammon.” will escape.
42The king of the north will invade many countries, including Egypt, 43and he will take its rich treasures of gold and silver. He will also conquer Libya and Ethiopia.#11.43 Ethiopia: The Hebrew text has “Cush,” which was a region south of Egypt that included parts of the present countries of Ethiopia and Sudan. 44But he will be alarmed by news from the east and the north, and he will become furious and cause great destruction. 45After this, he will set up camp between the Mediterranean Sea and Mount Zion. Then he will be destroyed, and no one will be able to save him.
