The Ordination of Aaron and his Sons
(Ex 29.1–37)
1The LORD said to Moses, 2“Take Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the Tent of my presence and bring the priestly garments, the anointing oil, the young bull for the sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread. 3Then call the whole community together there.”
4Moses did as the LORD had commanded, and when the community had assembled, 5he said to them, “What I am now about to do is what the LORD has commanded.”
6Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and told them to take a ritual bath. 7He put the shirt and the robe on Aaron and the sash round his waist. He put the ephod#8.7 ephod: See Word List. on him and fastened it by putting its finely woven belt round his waist. 8He put the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim#8.8 Urim and Thummim: Two objects used by the priest to determine God's will; it is not known precisely how they were used. in it. 9He placed the turban on his head, and on the front of it he put the gold ornament, the sacred sign of dedication, just as the LORD had commanded him.
10Then Moses took the anointing oil and put it on the Tent of the LORD's presence and everything that was in it, and in this way he dedicated it all to the LORD. 11He took some of the oil and sprinkled it seven times on the altar and its equipment and on the basin and its base, in order to dedicate them to the LORD. 12He ordained Aaron by pouring some of the anointing oil on his head. 13Next, Moses brought the sons of Aaron forward and put shirts on them, put sashes round their waists, and tied caps on their heads, just as the LORD had commanded.
14Then Moses brought the young bull for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons put their hands on its head. 15Moses killed it and took some of the blood, and with his finger put it on the projections at the corners of the altar, in order to dedicate it. He then poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. In this way he dedicated it and purified it. 16Moses took all the fat on the internal organs, the best part of the liver, and the kidneys with the fat on them, and burnt it all on the altar. 17He took the rest of the bull, including its skin, flesh, and intestines, and burnt it outside the camp, just as the LORD had commanded.
18Next, Moses brought the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons put their hands on its head. 19Moses killed it and threw the blood on all four sides of the altar. 20-21He cut the ram in pieces, washed the internal organs and the hind legs with water, and burnt the head, the fat, and all the rest of the ram on the altar, just as the LORD had commanded. This burnt offering was a food offering, and the smell was pleasing to the LORD.
22Then Moses brought the second ram, which was for the ordination of priests, and Aaron and his sons put their hands on its head. 23Moses killed it and took some of the blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron's right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 24Then he brought Aaron's sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Moses then threw the rest of the blood on all four sides of the altar. 25He took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat covering the internal organs, the best part of the liver, the kidneys with the fat on them, and the right hind leg. 26Then he took one loaf of bread from the basket of unleavened bread dedicated to the LORD, one loaf made with oil, and one biscuit, and he put them on top of the fat and the right hind leg. 27He put all this food in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they presented it as a special gift to the LORD. 28Then Moses took the food from them and burnt it on the altar, on top of the burnt offering, as an ordination offering. This was a food offering, and the smell was pleasing to the LORD. 29Then Moses took the breast and presented it as a special gift to the LORD. It was Moses' part of the ordination ram. Moses did everything just as the LORD had commanded.
30Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his sons and on their clothes. In this way he consecrated them and their clothes to the LORD.
31Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Take the meat to the entrance of the Tent of the LORD's presence, boil it, and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of ordination offerings, just as the LORD commanded. 32Burn up any meat or bread that is left over. 33You shall not leave the entrance of the Tent for seven days, until your ordination rites are completed. 34The LORD commanded us to do what we have done today, in order to take away your sin. 35You must stay at the entrance of the Tent day and night for seven days, doing what the LORD has commanded. If you don't, you will die. This is what the LORD has commanded me.” 36So Aaron and his sons did everything that the LORD had commanded through Moses.

Ordination of Aaron and His Sons
1The Lord spoke to Moses: 2“Take Aaron, his sons with him, the garments, the anointing oil, # Ex 29:7 the bull of the sin # Or purification offering, the two rams, and the basket # Gn 40:16 of unleavened bread, 3and assemble the whole community # Ex 12:47 at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” 4So Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the community assembled at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 5Moses said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.”
6Then Moses presented Aaron and his sons and washed them with water. 7He put the tunic on Aaron, wrapped the sash around him, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod # Ex 28:4 on him. He put the woven band of the ephod around him and fastened it to him. 8Then he put the breastpiece on him and placed the Urim and Thummim # Ex 28:30; Nm 27:21; Dt 33:8; 1Sm 28:6; Ezr 2:63; Neh 7:65 into the breastpiece. 9He also put the turban # Lv 16:4 on his head and placed the gold medallion, the holy diadem, on the front of the turban, as the Lord had commanded Moses. # Ex 28:1-43; 29:1-8; 39:1-31
10Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it to consecrate # Ex 19:10,14,23; 20:11 them. 11He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar with all its utensils, and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them. # Ex 30:18-28; 38:8; 40:7-11 12He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed and consecrated him. # Ex 29:7; 30:30; Lv 21:10-12 13Then Moses presented Aaron’s sons, clothed them with tunics, wrapped sashes around them, and fastened headbands on them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
14Then he brought the bull near for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull for the sin offering. 15Then Moses slaughtered it, # Or offering, and he slaughtered it . 15 Then Moses took the blood, and applied it with his finger to the horns of the altar on all sides, purifying # Ex 29:36; Lv 14:49,52; Nm 19:19; Ps 51:7; Ezk 43:22-23; 45:18 the altar. He poured out the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it so that atonement can be made on it. # Or it by making atonement for it # Ex 29:10-12,36-37; Lv 4:7 16Moses took all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys # Lv 7:4 with their fat, and he burned them on the altar. # Ex 29:13; Lv 4:7-10 17He burned up the bull with its hide, flesh, and dung outside the camp, # Ex 29:14; 33:7; Lv 4:12,21; 6:4; 9:11; 10:4-5; 13:46; 14:3; 16:27; 17:3; 24:14,23 as the Lord had commanded Moses.
18Then he presented the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 19Moses slaughtered it and # Or ram, 19 and he slaughtered it. Moses sprinkled the blood on all sides of the altar. 20Moses cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces, and the suet, # Lv 1:8 21but he washed the entrails and shanks with water. He then burned the entire ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a pleasing aroma, a fire offering to the Lord as He had commanded Moses.
22Next he presented the second ram, the ram of ordination, # Ex 29:22,26-34; Lv 7:37; 8:28-33 and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23Moses slaughtered it, # Or ram, 23 and he slaughtered it . Moses took some of its blood, and put it on Aaron’s right earlobe, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. # Ex 29:20; Lv 14:14,17,25,28 24Moses also presented Aaron’s sons and put some of the blood on their right earlobes, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Then Moses sprinkled the blood on all sides of the altar. 25He took the fat — the fat tail, # Lv 3:9 all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat — as well as the right thigh. 26From the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord he took one cake of unleavened bread, one cake of bread made with oil, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat portions and the right thigh. # Ex 29:3,23; Lv 7:32; Nm 6:15-19 27He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons and waved them before the Lord as a presentation offering. 28Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar with the burnt offering. This was an ordination offering for a pleasing aroma, a fire offering to the Lord. 29He also took the breast and waved it before the Lord as a presentation offering; it was Moses’ portion of the ordination ram as the Lord had commanded him.
30Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments, as well as on his sons and their garments. In this way he consecrated Aaron and his garments, as well as his sons and their garments. # Ex 29:21; Is 6:6-7; Heb 10:22
31Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket for the ordination offering as I commanded: # LXX, Syr, Tg read was commanded ; Ex 29:31-32 Aaron and his sons are to eat it. # Lv 6:16,18; 10:12; 1Co 9:13-14 32You must burn up what remains of the meat and bread. # Ex 29:34 33You must not go outside the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the time your days of ordination are completed, because it will take seven days to ordain you. # Lit because he will fill your hands for seven days 34The Lord commanded what has been done today in order to make atonement for you. # Ex 29:35-37; Heb 7:28 35You must remain at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and keep the Lord’s charge # Gn 26:5 so that you will not die, # Lv 10:1-2 for this is what I was commanded.” 36So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord had commanded through Moses.
