About the Book of Esther
The book of Esther tells us about a Jewish woman called Esther.
The king of Babylon had taken the Israelites away from Judah as prisoners. #1:0 The Israelites were the descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel. Jacob's 12 sons became the ancestors of Israel's 12 tribes. The land that God gave to them as their home was called Israel. After King Solomon died, the nation of Israel became two kingdoms. The nation in the north was called Israel. The nation in the south was called Judah. He took them to Babylon. #1:0 Babylon: a city on the Euphrates River which was very rich and powerful and rich. The king of Babylon ruled many other countries. Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon who attacked Jerusalem. That happened in about the year 586 BC. The book tells us what happened when King Xerxes ruled Persia, a country near Babylon. He ruled from about 486 to 465 BC.
The Book of Esther does not use the word ‘God’ at all. But it shows us how God was working at that time. He kept his people, the Jews, safe when they were in danger. #1:0 A Jew was someone who belonged to the Israelite tribe of Judah. The name was first used at the time of their exile in Babylon. The people of Israel who still remain after that time are called Jews.
It shows us that God listens to our prayers. It shows us that he has the power to make things happen as he wants them to. It shows us that he loves his own people and he keeps them safe. And it shows us that he has a purpose for his people.
