About the Book of Amos
Amos came from a town called Tekoa. It was near Jerusalem, the capital city of Judah. He was a shepherd who took care of sheep.
The country on the north side of Judah was called Israel. The capital city of Israel was Samaria. #1:0 After King Solomon died, the nation of Israel became two kingdoms. The nation in the north was called Israel. The nation in the south was called Judah. Jerusalem was the capital city of Judah. Samaria was another name for the Israelite kingdom in the north. Samaria was also the name of its capital city. Israel's king in Samaria was called Jeroboam. He was Israel's second king with that name. Judah's king in Jerusalem at that time was called Uzziah.
God's temple was in Jerusalem. The Israelites met there to worship God and to offer sacrifices. But the kings of Israel did not like it when their people went to Judah to worship God. So a long time ago, King Jeroboam I had made a place to worship God in Israel. It was in the town of Bethel. #1:0 See 1 Kings 12:31-33. Bethel means ‘God's house’. God was not happy about that. God chose Amos to leave his home in Judah and go and speak to the people of Israel. God told Amos what he should say to them.
In this book, we read God's message that Amos spoke to the people of Israel. Amos also explains the visions that God showed him.
