Wisdom 7

7
1I myself also am #7.1 Many authorities read a mortal man.mortal, like to all,
And am sprung from one #Ecclus. 17.1. Cp. 2 Esd. 10.10 & Ecclus. 40.1. See Gen. 2.7.born of the earth, #ch. 10.1. the man first formed,
2And in the womb of a mother was I moulded into flesh in the time of ten months,
Being #Cp. Job 10.10.compacted in blood of the seed of man and pleasure that came with sleep.
3And I also, when I was born, drew in the common air,
And fell upon #See ver. 1.the #7.3 Gr. of like qualities.kindred earth,
Uttering, like all, for my first voice, the selfsame wail:
4In swaddling clothes was I nursed, and #7.4 Gr. in.with watchful cares.
5For no king had any other first beginning;
6But #Cp. Job 1.21 & Ecclus. 40.1.all men have one entrance into life, and a like departure.
7 # 1 Kin. 3.9,12. Cp. Ecclus. 51.13. For this cause I prayed, and understanding was given me:
I called upon God, and there came to me a spirit of wisdom.
8I preferred her before sceptres and thrones,
# Cp. 1 Kin. 3.11. See Job 28.15-19 & Prov. 3.13-15. And riches I esteemed nothing in comparison of her.
9Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem,
# Cp. Bar. 3.30. Because all the gold of the earth in her presence is a little sand,
And silver shall be accounted as clay before her.
10 # Cp. Prov. 4.22. Above health and comeliness I loved her,
And I chose to have her rather than light,
# Cp. ver. 26 & ch. 6.12. Because her bright shining is never laid to sleep.
11But #1 Kin. 3.13. Prov. 3.16. Cp. Mat. 6.33.with her there came to me all good things together,
And in her hands innumerable riches:
12And I rejoiced over them all because wisdom leadeth them;
Though I knew not that she was the #7.12 Some authorities read first origin.mother of them.
13As I learned without guile, I impart #Cp. ch. 6.23.without grudging;
# Cp. Ecclus. 20.30. I do not hide her riches.
14For she is unto men a treasure that faileth not,
And #See ver. 27.they that use it #7.14 Gr. prepare for themselves.obtain friendship with God,
Commended to him #7.14 Gr. for the sake of the presents that come of discipline.by the gifts which they through #ch. 6.17.discipline present to him.
15 # Cp. Eph. 6.19,20. But to me may God give to speak #7.15 Or according to his mind Or according to my mindwith judgement,
And to conceive thoughts worthy of what #7.15 Some authorities read is said.hath been given me;
Because himself is one that guideth even wisdom and that correcteth the wise.
16For in his hand are both we and #See Ex. 4.12.our words;
# Cp. Ex. 35,31,33 & Is. 28.26. All understanding, and all acquaintance with divers crafts.
17 # Cp. 1 Kin. 4.29 & Eccles. 1.13. For himself gave me an unerring knowledge of the things that are,
To know the constitution of the world, and the operation of the elements;
18The beginning and end and middle of times,
The alternations of the solstices and the changes of seasons,
19The circuits of years and the #7.19 Or constellations #ver. 29 (for mg.).positions of stars;
20 # Cp. 1 Kin. 4.33. The natures of living creatures and the ragings of wild beasts,
The violences of #7.20 Or spiritswinds and the thoughts of men,
# Cp. 1 Kin. 4.33. The diversities of plants and the virtues of roots:
21All things that are either secret or manifest I learned,
22For she that is #ch. 8.5 & 14.2. Cp. Prov. 8.30.the artificer of all things taught me, even wisdom.
For there is in her a spirit quick of understanding, holy,
# 7.22 Gr. Sole-born. Alone in kind, #See 1 Cor. 12.4-11.manifold,
Subtil, #Cp. ver. 24.freely moving,
# Cp. ch. 10.21. Clear in utterance, #ch. 1.4. James 3.17.unpolluted,
Distinct, unharmed,
Loving what is good, #Cp. Heb. 4.12.keen, unhindered,
# James 3.17. Beneficent, 23#ch. 1.6 (mg.).loving toward man,
Stedfast, sure, #Cp. ch. 6.15.free from care,
All-powerful, all-surveying,
And penetrating through all spirits
That are quick of understanding, pure, most subtil:
24 # Cp. ver. 22. For wisdom is more mobile than any motion;
Yea, #Cp. ch. 8.1 & Ecclus. 1.9.she pervadeth and penetrateth all things by reason of her pureness.
25For she is #Cp. Ecclus. 24.3.a #7.25 Gr. vapour.breath of the power of God,
And a clear effluence of the glory of the Almighty;
Therefore can #See ver. 22.nothing defiled find entrance into her.
26For she is an #Cp. Heb. 1.3.effulgence from everlasting light,
And an unspotted mirror of the working of God,
And an #Cp. 2 Cor. 4.4 & Col. 1.15.image of his goodness.
27And she, being one, #ver. 22.hath power to do all things;
And remaining in herself, #Ps. 104.30. Cp. Rev. 21.5.reneweth all things:
And from generation to generation passing into holy souls
She maketh men #ver. 14. Cp. Ex. 33.11 & James 2.23.friends of God and prophets.
28For nothing doth God love save him that dwelleth with wisdom.
29For she is fairer than the sun,
And above #7.29 Gr. every arrangement of stars.all #ver. 19 (mg.).the constellations of the stars:
Being compared with light, she is found to be before it;
30For #7.30 Gr. to this.to the light of day succeedeth night,
But against wisdom evil doth not prevail;
