2 Mac. 8.1-7. And his son Judas, who was called Maccabæus, rose up in his stead. 2And all his brethren helped him, and so did #Cp. ch. 9.28.all they that clave unto his father, and they fought with gladness the battle of Israel. 3And he gat his people great glory, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and set battles in array, protecting the army with his sword. 4#Cp. 2 Mac. 11.11.And he was like a lion in his deeds, and as #See Gen. 49.9.a lion's whelp roaring for prey. 5And he pursued the lawless, seeking them out, and he #Cp. ch. 5.5.burnt up those that troubled his people. 6And the lawless shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of lawlessness were sore troubled, #Cp. ch. 14.36 & 16.2.and salvation prospered in his hand. 7And he angered many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and #Cp. Ecclus. 45.1 & 46.11.his memorial is blessed for ever. 8And he went about among the cities of Judah, and destroyed the ungodly #3.8 Gr. out of it.out of the land, and #Cp. Num. 25.11.turned away wrath from Israel: 9And he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he gathered together such as were ready to perish.
10And #2 Mac. 4.4,21 & 5.24.Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host from #2 Mac. 15.1.Samaria, to fight against Israel. 11And Judas perceived it, and he went forth to meet him, and smote him, and slew him: and many fell wounded to death, and the rest fled. 12And they took their spoils, and Judas took the sword of #2 Mac. 4.4,21 & 5.24.Apollonius, and therewith he fought all his days.
13And Seron, the commander of the host of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered a gathering and a congregation of faithful men with him, and of such as went out to war; 14And he said, I will make myself a name and get me glory in the kingdom; and I will fight against Judas and them that are with him, that set at nought the word of the king. 15And there went up with him also a mighty army of the ungodly to help him, to take vengeance on the children of Israel.
16And he came near unto #Cp. ver. 24. See Josh. 10.10.the going up of Bethhoron, and Judas went forth to meet him with a small company. 17But when they saw the army coming to meet them, they said unto Judas, What? shall we be able, being a small company, to fight against so great and strong a multitude? and we for our part are faint, having tasted no food this day. 18And Judas said, It is an easy thing for many #Cp. ch. 4.31.to be shut up in the hands of a few; #1 Sam. 14.6.and with #3.18 Some ancient authorities read the God of heaven.heaven it is all one, to save by many or by few; 19#Cp. Ps. 33.16.For victory in battle standeth not in the multitude of a host; but strength is from heaven. 20They come unto us in fulness of insolence and lawlessness, to destroy us and our wives and our children, for to spoil us: 21But we fight for our lives and #Cp. 2 Mac. 8.21 & 13.14.our laws. 22And he himself will discomfit them before our face: but as for you, be ye not afraid of them.
23Now when he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and Seron and his army were discomfited before him. 24And they pursued them in #Cp. ver. 16. See Josh. 10.11.the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, and there fell of them about eight hundred men; but the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.
25And #See Deut. 2.25.the fear of Judas and his brethren, and the dread of them, began to fall upon the nations round about them: 26And his name came near even unto the king, and every nation told of the battles of Judas.
27But when king #See ch. 1.10.Antiochus heard these words, he was full of indignation: and he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, an exceeding strong army. 28And he opened his treasury, and gave his forces pay for a year, and commanded them to be ready for every need. 29And he saw that the money failed from his treasures, and that the tributes of the country were small, because of the dissension and plague which he had brought upon the land, to the end that he might take away the laws which had been from the first days; 30And he feared that he should not have enough as at other times for the charges and the gifts which he gave aforetime with a liberal hand, and #Cp. Dan. 11.24.he abounded above the kings that were before him. 31And he was exceedingly perplexed in his mind, and he determined to go into #See ch. 6.1.Persia, and to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money. 32And he left #ch. 4.26,34 & 6.6,17,55 & 7.2.2 Mac. 10.11 & 11.1 & 13.2 & 14.2.Lysias, an honourable man, and one of the seed royal, to be over the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt, 33And to bring up his son #See ch. 1.10.Antiochus, until he came again. 34And he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and #See ch. 1.17.the elephants, and gave him charge of all the things that he would have done, and concerning them that dwelt in Judæa and in Jerusalem, 35That he should send a host against them, to root out and destroy the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and #ch. 12.53.to take away their memorial from the place; 36And that he should make strangers to dwell in all their coasts, and should divide their land to them by lot. 37And the king took the half that remained of the forces, and removed from #ch. 4.35 & 6.63 & 11.13,44,56., 2 Mac. 4.33., Acts 11.26, al.Antioch, from his royal city, #3.37 circa B. C. 166.the hundred and forty and seventh year; and he passed over the river Euphrates, and went through #ch. 6.1., 2 Mac. 9.23,25. Cp. Acts 19.1.the upper countries.
38And Lysias chose #See 2 Mac. 10.12.Ptolemy the son of Dorymenes, and #ch. 7.26,33,39,43.2 Mac. 8.9,34 & 9.3, al.Nicanor, and #ch. 4.1,5,18 & 5.59.2 Mac. 8.9 & 10.14 & 12.32, al.Gorgias, mighty men of the king's #See ch. 2.18.Friends; 39And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horse, to go into the land of Judah, and to destroy it, according to the word of the king. 40And they removed with all their host, and came and pitched near unto #ver. 57. ch. 4.3 & 9.50.Emmaus in the plain country. 41And the merchants of the country heard the fame of them, and #Cp. 2 Mac. 8.11,25.took silver and gold exceeding much, with #3.41 Most of the authorities read servants.fetters, and came into the camp to take the children of Israel for servants: and there were added unto them the forces of Syria and of #ch. 4.21 & 5.66,68 (& mg. for mg.).the land of the #3.41 Gr. strangers.Philistines.
42And Judas and his brethren saw that evils were multiplied, and that the forces were encamping in their borders; and they took knowledge of the king's words which he had commanded, to destroy the people and make an end of them; 43And they said each man to his neighbour, Let us raise up the ruin of our people, and let us fight for our people and the holy place. 44And the congregation was gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask for mercy and compassion. 45#ch. 1.38,39 & 4.38.And Jerusalem was without inhabitant as a wilderness, there was none of her offspring that went in or went out; and the sanctuary was trodden down, and #See ch. 1.33-36.the sons of strangers were in the citadel, the Gentiles lodged therein; and joy was taken away from Jacob, and the pipe and the harp ceased. 46And they gathered themselves together, and came to Mizpeh, over against Jerusalem; for #Judg. 20.1. 1 Sam. 7.5 & 10.17.in Mizpeh was there a place of prayer aforetime for Israel. 47And they fasted that day, and #ch. 2.14. See 2 Sam. 3.31.put on sackcloth, and #ch. 4.39 & 11.71.2 Mac. 10.25 & 14.15. put ashes upon their heads, and #See Gen. 37.29.rent their clothes, 48And laid open the book of the law, concerning which the Gentiles were wont to inquire, seeking the likenesses of their idols. 49And they brought #Cp. Ex. 28.4.the priests' garments, #See Neh. 10.35.and the firstfruits, and #See Lev. 27.30.the tithes: and they stirred up #Num. 6.2,13.the Nazirites, who had accomplished their days. 50And they cried aloud #Cp. ver. 18.toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these men, and whither shall we carry them away? 51And #ch. 1.39 & 4.38.thy holy place is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness and brought low. 52And, behold, the Gentiles are assembled together against us to destroy us: thou knowest what things they imagine against us. 53How shall we be able to stand before them, except thou be our help? 54#ch. 4.13 & 5.33 & 9.13 & 16.8. Cp. Num. 10.9.And they sounded with the trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.
55And after this Judas appointed leaders of the people, #ch. 16.19.captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens. 56And he said to them #See Deut. 20.5-8.that were building houses, and were betrothing wives, and were planting vineyards, and #Cp. Judg. 7.3.were fearful, that they should return, each man to his own house, #See Deut. 20.5-8.according to the law. 57And the army removed, and encamped upon the south side of #See ver. 40.Emmaus. 58And Judas said, Gird yourselves, and #2 Sam. 10.12.be valiant men, and be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these Gentiles, that are assembled together against us to destroy us, and our holy place: 59For it is better for us to die in battle, than to look upon the evils of our nation and the holy place. 60#2 Sam. 10.12.Nevertheless, as may be the will #Cp. ver. 18.in heaven, so shall he do.
