Christian Humility
1If, then, there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, # 2:1 Rm 5:8; 15:30; 2Th 2:16; 1Jn 3:16; 4:9–10,16 if any fellowship with the Spirit, # 2:1 1Co 12:13; 2Co 13:13; Eph 4:3 if any affection and mercy, # 2:1 Col 3:12 2make my joy complete by thinking the same way, # 2:2 Rm 12:16; 15:5; 2Co 13:11; Php 4:2 having the same love, # 2:2 2Th 1:3; 1Jn 3:16 united in spirit, intent on one # 2:2 Jn 11:52 purpose. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition # 2:3 Rm 2:8 or conceit, # 2:3 Gl 5:26 but in humility # 2:3 Col 3:12 consider others as more important # 2:3 Rm 13:1; Php 3:8; 4:7; 1Pt 2:13 than yourselves. 4Everyone should look not to his own interests, # 2:4 Rm 15:1 but rather to the interests of others. # 2:4 Lv 19:18; Mk 10:45; 12:31; 1Co 10:24; 13:5; Php 2:21
Christ’s Humility and Exaltation
5Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus,
6who, existing in the form of God,
did not consider equality with God # 2:6 Is 9:6; Jn 1:1,14; 20:28; Rm 9:5; Col 1:15–16; Ti 2:13; Heb 1:2–13; 2Pt 1:1; 1Jn 4:14–15
as something to be exploited. # 2:6 Or to be grasped, or to be held on to
7Instead he emptied himself # 2:7 Mk 9:12; 2Co 8:9; 13:4
by assuming the form of a servant, # 2:7 Is 42:1; 53:12; Mt 20:28; Mk 10:45
taking on the likeness of humanity. # 2:7 Jn 1:14; Rm 8:3; Gl 4:4; 1Tm 2:5; Heb 2:17
And when he had come as a man,
8he humbled himself by becoming obedient
to the point of death —
even to death on a cross. # 2:8 Lk 23:26; Php 3:10
9For this reason God highly exalted him # 2:9 Is 52:13; 53:12; Dn 7:14; Ac 2:32–33; 5:30–31; Eph 1:20–21; Heb 2:9
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10so that at the name of Jesus
every knee will bow # 2:10 Is 45:23 —
in heaven # 2:10 2Co 5:1; Eph 1:20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12; Heb 3:1; 12:22 and on earth
and under the earth # 2:10 Mt 28:18; Eph 1:10; Rv 5:13 —
11and every tongue # 2:11 Is 45:23; Rm 10:9; 14:11; 1Co 12:3 will confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory # 2:11 Lk 9:32; Jn 17:24; 2Co 3:18; 2Pt 3:18 of God the Father.
Lights in the World
12Therefore, my dear friends, # 2:12 Phm 1 just as you have always obeyed, # 2:12 Mk 1:27; Ac 16:14,32–33; Rm 6:12 so now, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose. 14Do everything without grumbling # 2:14 Jn 7:12; Ac 6:1; 1Pt 4:9 and arguing, # 2:14 1Tm 2:8 15so that you may be blameless # 2:15 Lk 1:6 and pure, # 2:15 Mt 10:16; Rm 16:19 children of God who are faultless # 2:15 Jd 24 in a crooked # 2:15 Lk 3:5; Ac 2:40; 1Pt 2:18 and perverted # 2:15 Mt 17:17 generation, # 2:15 Dt 32:5 among whom you shine like stars in the world, 16by holding firm to the word # 2:16 Lk 8:21; Jn 18:32; Ac 17:11; Heb 4:12 of life. Then I can boast # 2:16 Rm 2:17; Gl 6:4; Php 1:26 in the day of Christ # 2:16 Php 1:6,15 that I didn’t run or labor for nothing. 17But even if I am poured out # 2:17 Php 1:7 as a drink offering # 2:17 Ex 25:29; Nm 28:7 on the sacrificial service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18In the same way you should also be glad and rejoice with me.
Timothy and Epaphroditus
19Now I hope in the Lord Jesus # 2:19 Lk 24:3 to send Timothy # 2:19 Ac 16:1; 1Tm 1:2 to you soon so that I too may be encouraged by news about you. 20For I have no one else like-minded who will genuinely care about your interests; 21all seek their own interests, # 2:21 Rm 15:1; 2Tm 3:2 not those of Jesus Christ. # 2:21 1Co 10:24; Php 1:15 22But you know his proven character, because he has served with me in the gospel ministry like a son with a father. 23Therefore, I hope to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. 24I am confident in the Lord that I myself will also come soon. # 2:24 Php 1:7
25But I considered it necessary to send you Epaphroditus # 2:25 Php 4:18 — my brother, coworker, and fellow soldier, as well as your messenger and minister to my need # 2:25 Mt 6:8 — 26since he has been longing for all of you and was distressed because you heard that he was sick. 27Indeed, he was so sick that he nearly died. However, God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. 28For this reason, I am very eager to send him so that you may rejoice again when you see him and I may be less anxious. 29Therefore, welcome him in the Lord with great joy and hold people like him in honor, 30because he came close to death for the work # 2:30 Mk 14:6; 2Co 9:8; Gl 3:10; Jms 2:14–26 of Christ, risking his life to make up what was lacking in your ministry to me.

1If, therefore, there is any idud (encouragement) in Moshiach, if any nechamah (comfort) of ahavah (love), if any deveykus (attachment to G-d) in the Messianic chavrusashaft (association) of the Ruach Hakodesh, if any warmth of affection and rachamanut (compassion, mercy), 2Then make my simcha (joy) shleimah (complete) by having the same lev, the same ahavah, being an agudah association with one neshamah, thinking the same machshavot (thoughts), 3Doing nothing according to anochiyut#2:3 Pp 1:17 (selfishness) nor according to empty ga'avah (conceit, haughtiness, arrogance), but in anavah (humility), fergin (graciously grant) each other esteem above yourselves.#2:3 Ro 12:10 4Let each of you talmidim look after not only your own interests, but also the best interests of others.#2:4 2:21; 1C 10:24,33 5Let this mind be in you which was also in Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua, 6Who, though existing in the demut of the mode of being of Elohim,#2:6 His etzem or essential nature, Yn 1:1-2; 17:5 nevertheless Moshiach did not regard being equal with G-d as a thing to be seized,#2:6 Gn 3:5 7But poured out and emptied himself,#2:7 2C 8:9 taking the demut of the mode of being of an eved,#2:7 Isa 52:13—53:12 T.N. see the AVDI TZADDIK TZEMACH DOVID MOSHIACH Jer 23:5; Zech 3:8 and was born in the likeness of Bnei Adam,#2:7 Yn 1:14; Ro 8:3; MJ 2:14-17 and having been found in appearance as an Adam, 8Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach humbled himself and took the path of shiflut (lowliness), unto mishma'at#2:8 Pp 2:12 (obedience)#2:8 cf. Gn 3:17 even unto death,#2:8 Yn 10:17; MJ 5:8; 12:2 and that, a death on HaEtz.#2:8 the Tree, Dt 21:23; 27:26; Ga 3:13; Pp 3:18 9Therefore, also Hashem exalted#2:9 Isa 52:13; 53:12; Dan 9:26; 7:14; Ac 2:33; MJ 1:3 Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, and gave to him haShem#2:9 Ep 1:21; MJ 1:4 above every name, 10That at haShem of Yehoshua, KOL BERECH (every knee) will bow,#2:10 Isa 45:23 of beings b'Shomayim and ba'Aretz and mitachat la'Aretz (in the world below), 11And KOL LASHON#2:11 Isa 45:23 (every tongue) shall make hoda'ah (confession) with an Ani Ma'amin that is an open and public admission that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua (Yeshua) is Adoneinu, to the kavod of Elohim Avinu.
12Therefore, Chaverim, just as you have always had mishma'at#2:12 Pp 2:8 (obedience) concerning me, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own Yeshu'ah (Salvation)#2:12 1:19[28] B'YIR'AH (with fear) and BIRA'DAH “with trembling”.#2:12 Ps 2:11 13For Hashem is the one working in you, both to will and to work according to His chafetz (good pleasure of His will).#2:13 Ezra 1:5
14Do all things without murmurings and madon, 15That you may be innocent and without michshol of blame,#2:15 1:10 bnei haElohim TAMIM U'MUM#2:15 Ex 12:5; Lv 22:20; Isa 53:7-9 (unblemished and unspotted) in the midst of a DOR IKKESH UFETALTOL (warped and crooked generation),#2:15 Dt 32:5 among whom you shine as the ZOHAR#2:15 Dan 12:3 in the Olam Hazeh, 16Holding fast the Dvar HaChayyim. This is so that I will have reason for glorying on the Yom HaMoshiach,#2:16 Pp 1:6,10 that I neither ran nor labored L'TOHU (in vain).#2:16 Isa 49:4; 65:23 17And, indeed, if my neshamah is to be poured out as a nesekh (libation wine) offering upon the korban (sacrifice) of the avodas kodesh (kohenʼs service, ministry) of your emunah, I have simcha, rejoicing together with you all.#2:17 cf. Ro 15:16; 2Ti 4:6 18And in the same way also you have simcha, rejoicing together with me.#2:18 1:4,18; 1:25; 2:2,17
19I have tikvah b'Adoneinu Yehoshua to send Timotiyos to you soon, that I also may be cheered up in the da'as of the things concerning you. 20For I have no one like-minded who will emesdik (genuinely) care for your spiritual welfare. 21All of them are seeking their own interest,#2:21 2:4 not those of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Yehoshua. 22But of the proven mamashus (real worth) of Timotiyos you have da'as, because as a ben with his abba, Timotiyos served with me in the Besuras HaGeulah. 23Therefore, I have tikvah to send him, as soon as I see how things will go with me. 24But I have bitachon in Hashem that indeed I will come quickly.
25But I considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, the Ach b'Moshiach and fellow po'el (worker) and fellow chaiyal (soldier) of mine, but your shliach and keli kodesh (minister) of my need.#2:25 4:18 26I am sending him to you, because he was yearning after you all and was under zeiyar (extremely great) stress, because you heard that he was ill. 27For indeed he was ill, coming near to death, but Hashem had mercy on him not on him only but also on me, lest I should have agmat nefesh upon agmat nefesh. 28Therefore, I am all the more eager to dispatch him to you, in order that when you have seen him again, you may have simcha and I may have less agmat nefesh. 29Therefore, receive him in Adoneinu with all simcha and hold esteem for such klei kodesh (ministers),#2:29 1C 16:8,16; 1Ti 5:17 30Because he came near to death on account of the avodas kodesh of Moshiach, performing an act of Messianic mesirat nefesh (whole-hearted devotion)#2:30 to the cause of Moshiach, even at risk of life having risked his life, that he might make up for the ministry to me that you could not give.
