A Case of Daughters’ Inheritance
1The daughters of Zelophehad approached; Zelophehad was the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh from the clans of Manasseh, the son of Joseph. These were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2They stood before Moses, the priest Eleazar, the leaders, and the entire community at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, 3“Our father died in the wilderness, but he was not among Korah’s followers, who gathered together against the Lord. # 27:3 Nm 16:1–3,11 Instead, he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons. 4Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan? Since he had no son, give us property among our father’s brothers.”
5Moses brought their case before the Lord, 6and the Lord answered him, 7“What Zelophehad’s daughters say is correct. You are to give them hereditary property among their father’s brothers and transfer their father’s inheritance to them. # 27:7 Jos 17:4 8Tell the Israelites: When a man dies without having a son, transfer his inheritance to his daughter. 9If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11If his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative of his clan, and he will take possession of it. This is to be a statutory ordinance for the Israelites as the Lord commanded Moses.”
Joshua Commissioned to Succeed Moses
12Then the Lord said to Moses, # 27:12–14 Dt 32:48–51 “Go up this mountain of the Abarim range # 27:12 = Mount Nebo; Nm 33:47–48; Dt 32:49; Jr 22:20 and see the land that I have given the Israelites. 13After you have seen it, you will also be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was. # 27:13 Nm 20:22–29 14When the community quarreled in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against my command to demonstrate my holiness in their sight at the waters.” Those were the Waters of Meribah-kadesh # 27:14 = Quarreling in the Wilderness of Zin. # 27:14 Nm 20:2–13
15So Moses appealed to the Lord, 16“May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all, # 27:16 Or God of the spirits of all flesh,# 27:16 Nm 16:22 appoint a man over the community 17who will go out before them and come back in before them, # 27:17 Jos 14:11; 1Sm 18:13–16; 2Sm 5:2; 11:1; 1Kg 3:7; 2Kg 11:9 and who will bring them out and bring them in, so that the Lord’s community won’t be like sheep without a shepherd.” # 27:17 1Kg 22:17; 2Ch 18:16; Ezk 34:5; Mt 9:36; Mk 6:34
18The Lord replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him. # 27:18 Dt 34:9 19Have him stand before the priest Eleazar and the whole community, and commission # 27:19 Dt 31:14,23; Ps 91:11; Is 10:6 him in their sight. 20Confer some of your authority on him so that the entire Israelite community will obey him. 21He will stand before the priest Eleazar who will consult the Lord for him with the decision of the Urim. # 27:21 Ex 28:30 He and all the Israelites with him, even the entire community, will go out and come back in at his command.”
22Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua, had him stand before the priest Eleazar and the entire community, 23laid his hands on him, and commissioned him, as the Lord had spoken through Moses.

The daughters of Zelophehad are given land
1Zelophehad#27.1 Zelophehad: Hebrew “Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh son of Joseph”. was from the Manasseh tribe, and he had five daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
2One day his daughters went to the sacred tent, where they met with Moses, Eleazar, and some other leaders of Israel, as well as a large crowd of Israelites. The young women said:
3You know that our father died in the desert. But it was for something he did wrong, not for joining with Korah in rebelling against the LORD.
Our father left no sons 4to carry on his family name. But why should his name die out for that reason? Give us some land like the rest of his relatives in our clan, so our father's name can live on.
5Moses asked the LORD what should be done, 6and the LORD answered:
7Zelophehad's daughters are right. They should each be given part of the land their father would have received.#Nu 36.2.
8Tell the Israelites that when a man dies without a son, his daughter will inherit his land. 9If he has no daughter, his brothers will inherit the land. 10But if he has no brothers, his father's brothers will inherit the land. 11And if his father has no brothers, the land must be given to his nearest relative in the clan. This is my law, and the Israelites must obey it.

Joshua is appointed Israel's leader
(Deuteronomy 31.1-8)
12The LORD said to Moses, “One day you will go up into the Abarim Mountains, and from there you will see the land I am giving the Israelites.#Dt 3.23-27; 32.48-52. 13After you have seen it, you will die,#27.12,13 One day…you will die: The story of Moses' death is in Deuteronomy 34.1-8. just like your brother Aaron, 14because both of you disobeyed me at Meribah near the town of Kadesh in the Zin Desert. When the Israelites insulted me there, you didn't believe in my holy power.”#27.14 both of you…my holy power: See 20.1-13.
15Moses replied, 16“You are the LORD God, and you know what is in everyone's heart. So I ask you to appoint a leader for Israel. 17Your people need someone to lead them into battle, or else they will be like sheep wandering around without a shepherd.”#1 K 22.17; Ez 34.5; Mt 9.36; Mk 6.34.
18The LORD answered, “Joshua son of Nun can do the job. Place your hands on him to show that he is the one to take your place.#Ex 24.13. 19Then go with him and make him stand in front of Eleazar the priest and the Israelites. Appoint Joshua as their new leader 20and tell them they must now obey him, just as they obey you. 21But Joshua must depend on Eleazar to find out from me#27.21 from me: The Hebrew text has “by the urim”, something used by the priests to get answers from the LORD. what I want him to do as he leads Israel into battle.”#Ex 28.30; 1 S 14.41; 28.6.
22Moses followed the LORD's instructions and took Joshua to Eleazar and the people, 23then he placed his hands on Joshua and appointed him Israel's leader.#Dt 31.23.
