Rejection at Nazareth
1He # 6:1–6 Mt 13:53–58 left there and came to his hometown, # 6:1 Mk 1:9 and his disciples # 6:1 Mt 9:10; Mk 10:10; Lk 6:1; Jn 6:3; Ac 6:1 followed him. 2When the Sabbath # 6:2 Mk 2:23; Lk 13:10 came, he began to teach # 6:2 Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 in the synagogue, # 6:2 Jms 2:2 and many who heard him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things? ” they said. “What is this wisdom # 6:2 Pr 3:19; Ac 7:22; 1Co 1:21 that has been given to him, and how are these miracles # 6:2 Ac 19:11 performed by his hands? 3Isn’t this the carpenter, # 6:3 Mt 13:55 the son of Mary, # 6:3 Mt 1:16 and the brother of James, # 6:3 Jms 1:1; Jd 1 Joses, Judas, # 6:3 Mt 13:55; Jd 1 and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us? ” So they were offended # 6:3 Jn 16:1 by him.
4Jesus said to them, “A prophet # 6:4 Mt 2:23 is not without honor # 6:4 Mt 13:57; 1Co 4:10; 12:23 except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.” 5He was not able to do a miracle # 6:5 Ac 19:11 there, except that he laid his hands on # 6:5 1Tm 5:22 a few sick # 6:5 1Co 11:30 people and healed # 6:5 Ac 8:7 them. 6And he was amazed # 6:6 Rv 17:6 at their unbelief. # 6:6 Heb 3:12,19 He was going around the villages teaching. # 6:6 Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11
Commissioning the Twelve
7He # 6:7–13 Mt 10:5–42; Lk 9:1–6 summoned # 6:7 Lk 18:16 the Twelve # 6:7 Mk 11:11 and began to send # 6:7 Mk 3:14 them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean # 6:7 2Co 6:17 spirits. # 6:7 Lk 11:24 8He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a staff — no bread, no traveling bag, # 6:8 Lk 10:4 no money in their belts, 9but to wear sandals and not put on an extra shirt. # 6:9 Jn 19:23 10He said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place. 11If any place does not welcome # 6:11 Ac 17:11 you or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet # 6:11 Mt 10:14; Lk 9:5; 10:11; Ac 13:51 as a testimony # 6:11 1Tm 2:6 against them.” # 6:11 Other mss add Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom or Gomorrah on judgment day than for that town. 12So they went out and preached # 6:12 Mk 1:4 that people should repent. # 6:12 Ac 3:19; 26:20 13They drove out many demons, # 6:13 Mk 3:15; Rv 9:20; 18:2 anointed # 6:13 Mk 16:1 many sick # 6:13 1Co 11:30 people with oil # 6:13 Jms 5:14 and healed them. # 6:13 Ac 8:7
John the Baptist Beheaded
14King # 6:14–16 Lk 9:7–9 Herod # 6:14 Mt 14:1 heard about it, because Jesus’s name # 6:14 Jn 10:25 had become well known. Some # 6:14 Other mss read He said, “John the Baptist # 6:14 Mk 1:4 has been raised from the dead, # 6:14 Mt 17:9; Jn 21:14 and that’s why miraculous powers # 6:14 Mk 5:30 are at work # 6:14 1Co 12:6 in him.” 15But others said, “He’s Elijah.” # 6:15 Mk 8:28 Still others said, “He’s a prophet, like one of the prophets from long ago.” # 6:15 Mt 2:23; Ac 7:52
16When Herod # 6:16 Mt 14:1 heard of it, he said, “John, # 6:16 Mk 1:4 the one I beheaded, has been raised! ” # 6:16 Mt 26:32
17For # 6:17–29 Mt 14:6–12 Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain # 6:17 Mk 15:1 him in prison on account of Herodias, # 6:17 Mt 14:3,6; Lk 3:19 his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her. # 6:17 1Tm 5:14 18John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful # 6:18 Mk 2:24; Jn 18:31 for you to have your brother’s wife.” # 6:18 Lv 18:16; 20:21 19So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill # 6:19 Lk 20:15 him. But she could not, 20because Herod feared # 6:20 Ps 147:11; Pr 1:7; Rv 14:7 John and protected him, knowing he was a righteous # 6:20 Mt 13:17 and holy # 6:20 Ps 20:6; 1Co 7:14 man. When Herod heard him he would be very perplexed, # 6:20 Other mss read When he heard him, he did many things,# 6:20 Lk 24:4; Jn 13:22; Ac 25:20; 2Co 4:8; Gl 4:20 and yet he liked to listen to him. # 6:20 2Co 11:19
21An opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet # 6:21 Jn 13:2 for his nobles, # 6:21 Rv 6:15 military commanders, # 6:21 Ac 21:31 and the leading men of Galilee. # 6:21 Mt 17:22 22When Herodias’s own daughter # 6:22 Other mss read When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, # 6:22 Mt 11:17 she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23He promised her with an # 6:23 Heb 6:16 oath: # 6:23 Mt 5:34 “Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom.” # 6:23 Lk 4:5
24She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for? ”
“John the Baptist’s # 6:24 Mk 1:4 head,” she said.
25At once she hurried to the king and said, “I want you to give me John the Baptist’s # 6:25 Lk 7:20 head on a platter # 6:25 Mt 14:8 immediately.” 26Although the king was deeply distressed, # 6:26 Mt 26:38; Mk 14:34 because of his oaths # 6:26 Mt 5:33 and the guests # 6:26 Lit and those reclining at the table he did not want to refuse # 6:26 1Th 4:8 her. 27The king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring John’s head. So he went and beheaded him in prison, 28brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. 29When John’s disciples # 6:29 Mk 10:10; Jn 3:25 heard about it, they came and removed his corpse and placed it in a tomb. # 6:29 Jn 5:28
Feeding of the Five Thousand
30The # 6:30–44 Mt 14:13–21; Lk 9:10–17; Jn 6:1–15 apostles # 6:30 Ac 1:2; Jd 17 gathered around Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught. 31He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
32So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place, 33but many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they ran on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. # 6:33 Other mss add and gathered around him
34When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd and had compassion # 6:34 Lk 15:20 on them, because they were like sheep # 6:34 Mt 7:15 without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things.
35When it grew late, his disciples # 6:35 Mk 10:10 approached him and said, “This place is deserted, # 6:35 Jn 1:23; Rv 12:6 and it is already late. 36Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages to buy themselves something to eat.”
37 “You give them something to eat,” he responded.
They said to him, “Should we go and buy two hundred denarii # 6:37 A denarius = one day’s wage worth of bread and give them something to eat? ”
38He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”
When they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39Then he instructed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves. He kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42Everyone ate and was satisfied. # 6:42 Mt 5:6 43They picked up twelve baskets full of pieces of bread and fish. 44Now those who had eaten the loaves were five thousand men.
Walking on the Water
45Immediately # 6:45–56 Mt 14:22–36; Jn 6:16–21 he made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, to Bethsaida, # 6:45 Jn 12:21 while he dismissed the crowd. 46After he said good-bye to them, he went away to the mountain # 6:46 Mt 4:8 to pray. # 6:46 Mt 5:44; Ac 12:12 47Well into the night, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48He saw them straining # 6:48 Rv 20:10 at the oars, # 6:48 Or them being battered as they rowed because the wind was against them. Very early in the morning # 6:48 Lit Around the fourth watch of the night = 3 to 6 a.m. he came toward them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them. 49When they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost # 6:49 Mt 14:26 and cried out, 50because they all saw him and were terrified. # 6:50 Jn 5:7 Immediately he spoke with them and said, “Have courage! # 6:50 Jn 16:33 It is I. # 6:50 Ex 3:14; Ps 45:8; Jn 8:24 Don’t be afraid.” # 6:50 Jn 6:20 51Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded, 52because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened. # 6:52 Mk 8:17; Heb 3:8
Miraculous Healings
53When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret # 6:53 Mt 14:34; Lk 5:1 and anchored there.
54As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized him. 55They hurried throughout that region and began to carry the sick # 6:55 Lk 5:31 on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56Wherever he went, into villages, towns, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch just the end # 6:56 Mt 23:5 of his robe. # 6:56 Mt 9:20; 14:36; Lk 8:44; 19:36 And everyone who touched it was healed.

Markos 6
6
1And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach came out from there and comes into his shtetl and his talmidim follow him. 2And Shabbos having come, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach began to say shiurim in the shul, and many, listening, were amazed, saying, From where [did] this one get lernen (Torah learning), and what [is] the chochmah (wisdom) that has been given to this one? And what gevurot (mighty deeds) are being done by his hands? 3Is not this one the Naggar (Carpenter), Ben Miryam? The brother of Ya'akov, Yosi, Yehuda and Shim'on? And, are not his achayot here with us? And they were taking offense at Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach. 4And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was saying to them, A navi is not without his kavod, except in his own shtetl and among his own mishpochah and in his own bais.#6:4 T.N. SeeMt 13:55 5And he was not able there to do many nissim (miracles), except on a few cholim (sick people) he laid (his) hands and administered refuah (healing) to them. 6And he wondered on account of their lack of emunah. And he was going around the shtetlach in a circuit, saying shiurim.
7And Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach summons the Shneym Asar, and he began to send them out two by two, and he was giving to them samchut [over] the ruchot hatumah.#6:7 Dt 17:6 8And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach gave directives to them that they should take nothing on [the] derech except a mere walking stick, not lechem, not a schnorrerʼs sack, nor a money belt; 9But instead, to wear sandals, and not to take an extra bekishe. 10And he was saying to them, Wherever you enter into a bais, stay there until you leave that area. 11And whatever place does not give you the kabbalat panim (welcome), and does not listen to you, then, as you are leaving there, let it be NIER CHATZNO, shake off the dust of your feet, for an edut to them. 12And having gone out, they preached that Bnei Adam should make teshuva. 13And many shedim they were casting out, and they were anointing with shemen many cholim, and they were administering refuah to them.
14And Herod the king heard of it, for the name of Yehoshua had become bavust (famous), and some were saying, Yochanan of the tevilah of teshuva has been made to stand up alive from [the] mesim, and for this reason the nissim (miracles) are at work in him. 15But others were saying, It is Eliyahu HaNavi. Still others were saying, He is a navi, like one of the neviim of old.#6:15 Mal 3:23 16But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, Yochanan whom I beheaded has stood up alive from the mesim! 17For Herod himself had sent and had Yochanan arrested and bound in the beis hasohar, on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother, Philippos, for he had married her. 18But Yochanan was saying to Herod, It is not mutar according to the Torah for you to have your brotherʼs wife.#6:18 Lv 18:16; 20:21 19And Herodias bore a grudge against Yochanan and desired to kill him. But she could not. 20For Herod feared Yochanan, knowing him [to be] a tzaddik and kadosh, and Herod was protecting Yochanan. And when Herod heard Yochanan, he was greatly disturbed, and [yet] gladly Herod was listening to Yochanan.
21And, an opportune day having come, when Herod, on his yom huledet (birthday), gave a mishteh for the court of his nobles, and the military commanders, and those of chashivut (prominence) of the Galil,#6:21 Esth 1:3; 2:18 22And when his daughter entered and danced, she pleased Herod and the ones reclining at the seudah with him. And the king said to the girl, Ask me whatever you wish and I will give [it] to you. 23And he made a shevuah (oath) to her solemnly, Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my Malchut.#6:23 Esth 5:3,6; 7:2 24And having gone out, she said to her mother, What should I ask [for]? And her mother said, The rosh Yochanan of the tevilah of teshuva. 25And having entered, ofen ort, with haste before the king, she made a request, saying, You may give to me upon a platter the rosh Yochanan of the tevilah of teshuva. 26And having become very sad, the king, on account of his shevuah and on account of the ones reclining at the seudah [with him], was unwilling to refuse her. 27And, ofen ort, the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring the rosh Yochanan. And having left, the executioner beheaded Yochanan of the tevilah of teshuva in the beit hasohar. 28And he brought the rosh Yochanan upon a platter and gave it to the young girl, and the young girl gave it to her mother. 29And, having heard this, Yochananʼs talmidim came and carried away his geviyah (body) and placed it in a kever (grave).
30And the Shlichim gathered together with Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach and reported to him everything which they did and the torah which they had taught. 31And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to them, Come away a while, you yourselves, for a yechidus in a quiet place for a Shabbaton (rest from work). For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time for okhel (food). 32And they departed in the sirah (boat) to a secluded place for a yechidus. 33And the people, recognizing them, saw them departing, and from all the shtetlach they ran there and arrived ahead of them. 34And having gotten out of the sirah (boat), Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach saw a large multitude and he had rachmei shomayim (heavenly mercy) on them, for they were KATSON ASHER AIN LAHEM ROEH (like sheep without a shepherd), and he began with his torah to teach them many things.#6:34 Num 27:17; 1Kgs 22:17; 2Chr 18:16; Ezek 34:8 35And when it was already a late hour, his talmidim came up to him and were saying, This place is desolate and already [it is] late. 36Send them away, that, having departed to the surrounding farms and shtetlach, they may buy for themselves okhel (food) they may eat. 37But in reply, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to them, You yourselves give them to eat. And they say to him, Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii for lechem and give to them to eat [something]?#6:37 2Kgs 4:42-44 38And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to them, How much lechem do you have? Go [and] see. And knowing, the talmidim of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach say, Chamesh (five), and dagim, shenayim (two). 39And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach commanded them to recline at tish, as it were, everyone group by group, on the green grass. 40And they reclined, group by group, in hundreds and in fifties. 41And, having taken the chamesh loaves and the shnei hadagim (two fish) and looking up to Shomayim, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said a bracha. And having offered the betziat halechem, Moshiach was giving to his talmidim in order that they might set them before the people. And Moshiach divided the shnei hadagim (two fish) among them all. 42And everyone ate, and they were satisfied. 43And they picked up shirayim (Rebbeʼs remainders), shneym asar (twelve) baskets full, and from the dagim. 44And those who had eaten the loaves numbered chamesh elafim (five thousand).
45And ofen ort Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach compelled his talmidim to embark into the sirah (boat) and to go before [him] to the other side to Beit-Tzaidah, while he dismisses the multitude. 46And with a Shalom farewell to them, Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach departed to the mountain to daven. 47And erev having come, the sirah (boat) was in [the] middle of the lake, and Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach was alone on shore. 48And having seen them laboring at the oars, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of halailah, he comes to them, walking on the lake. And he wanted to go by them. 49But having seen him on the lake, they thought that it is a ruach refaim (an apparition). And they cried out; 50For everyone saw him. And ofen ort he spoke with them, and they were filled with pachad (terror). Moshiach says to them, Chazak! (Be strong!) Ani hu. (I am He). Do not be afraid. 51And he got into the sirah (boat) with them. And the wind died down. And in themselves they were exceedingly amazed. 52For they did not have binah concerning the loaves,#6:52 See 6:43 but their levavot (hearts) had been hardened.
53And having crossed over onto the land, they came to Gennesaret and anchored. 54And when they disembark from the sirah (boat), the people ofen ort recognized Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach. 55And the people rushed everywhere in that region, and they began carrying about on their mats cholim where they heard he was. 56And wherever Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was entering into the shtetlach or into towns or into the countryside, thy laid the cholim in the marketplaces, entreating him that they might just touch Moshiachʼs tzitzit. And as many as touched it were receiving refuah (healing).#6:56 Num 15:38-41; Dt 22:12
