The Lord’s Rule from Restored Zion
1In the last days # 4:1–3 Is 2:2–4; Dn 2:28; 10:14; Hs 3:5; Mc 5:10
the mountain of the Lord’s house # 4:1 Ezk 43:12; Mc 3:12; Zch 8:3
will be established
at the top of the mountains
and will be raised above the hills.
Peoples will stream to it, # 4:1 Ps 22:27; 86:9; Jr 3:17
2and many nations will come and say, # 4:2 Zch 2:11; 14:16
“Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the Lord, # 4:2 Is 56:6–7; Jr 31:6
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us about his ways # 4:2 Ps 25:8–9,12; Is 54:13
so we may walk in his paths.”
For instruction will go out of Zion # 4:2 Is 42:1–4; Zch 14:8–9
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
3He will settle disputes among many peoples # 4:3 Is 11:3–5
and provide arbitration for strong nations
that are far away.
They will beat their swords into plows
and their spears into pruning knives.
Nation will not take up the sword against nation,
and they will never again train for war.
4But each person will sit under his grapevine # 4:4 1Kg 4:25; Zch 3:10
and under his fig tree
with no one to frighten him. # 4:4 Lv 26:6; Jr 30:10
For the mouth of the Lord # 4:4 Is 1:20; 40:5 of Armies
has spoken.
5Though all the peoples walk
in the name of their own gods, # 4:5 2Kg 17:29
we will walk # 4:5 Zch 10:12 in the name of the Lord our God
forever and ever. # 4:5 Jos 24:15; Is 26:8,13
6On that day —
this is the Lord’s declaration —
I will assemble the lame
and gather the scattered, # 4:6 Is 35:6; Jr 31:8; Mc 2:12; Zph 3:19
those I have injured.
7I will make the lame into a remnant, # 4:7 Mc 5:7–8; 7:18; Mt 11:5; Lk 14:21
those far removed into a strong nation.
Then the Lord will reign over them # 4:7 Is 24:23 in Mount Zion
from this time on and forever.
8And you, watchtower for the flock, # 4:8 Ps 48:3,12; 61:3
fortified hill # 4:8 Or flock, Ophel of Daughter Zion,
the former rule # 4:8 Is 1:26; Zch 9:10 will come to you;
sovereignty will come to Daughter Jerusalem.
From Exile to Victory
9Now, why are you shouting loudly? # 4:9 Jr 8:19
Is there no king with you?
Has your counselor perished # 4:9 Is 3:1–3
so that anguish grips you like a woman in labor?
10Writhe and cry out, # 4:10 Hb obscure,# 4:10 Mc 5:3 Daughter Zion,
like a woman in labor,
for now you will leave the city # 4:10 2Kg 20:18; Hs 2:14
and camp in the open fields.
You will go to Babylon;
there you will be rescued; # 4:10 Is 43:14; 45:13; Mc 7:8–12
there the Lord will redeem you # 4:10 Is 48:20; 52:9–12
from the grasp of your enemies!
11Many nations have now assembled against you; # 4:11 Is 5:25–30; 17:12–14
they say, “Let her be defiled,
and let us feast our eyes on Zion.”
12But they do not know the Lord’s intentions # 4:12 Ps 147:19–20
or understand his plan,
that he has gathered them
like sheaves to the threshing floor.
13Rise and thresh, # 4:13 Is 41:15 Daughter Zion,
for I will make your horns iron
and your hooves bronze
so you can crush many peoples. # 4:13 Jr 51:20–23
Then you # 4:13 LXX, Syr, Tg; MT reads I will set apart their plunder # 4:13 Is 60:9
for the Lord,
their wealth for the Lord of the whole earth.

1But in the acharit hayamim (the last days) it shall come to pass,
that the Har Beis Hashem shall be established
as the rosh heharim (chief of mountains),
and it shall be exalted above the hills;
and amim (peoples) shall stream unto it.
2And Goyim rabbim shall come, and say:
Come, and let us go up to the Har Hashem,
and to the Beis Elohei Ya'akov;
and He (Hashem) will be moreinu of His drakhim (ways),
and we will walk in His orkhot (ways);
for torah shall go forth from Tziyon,
and the Devar Hashem from Yerushalayim.
3And He shall judge among amim rabbim,
and Hashem will be mochiach (arbitrator) for Goyim atzumim afar off;
and they shall beat their charavot (swords) into plow blades,
and their khanitot (spears) into pruning knives;
And Goy el Goy (nation against nation) will not take up cherev (sword),
neither shall they learn milchamah (war) any more.
4But they shall sit every man
under his gefen (vine) and under his te'enah (fig tree);
and none shall make them afraid;
for the mouth of Hashem Tzva'os hath spoken.
5For Kol HaAmmim will walk
every one b'shem Elohav,
and we will walk b'shem Hashem
Eloheinu l'olam va'ed.
6In Yom HaHu, saith Hashem,
will I gather that which is lame,
and I will gather those which have been thrust out,
and those that I have afflicted;
7And I will make that which is lame a She'erit (remnant),
v'hannahala'ah (and that which is far removed) a Goy atzum (mighty nation);
and Hashem shall reign over them in Har Tziyon
me'attah ve'ad olam (from henceforth, even for ever).
8And thou, O migdal eder (tower of the flock), hill of Bat Tziyon,
unto thee shall it come,
even the hammemshalah harishonah (former dominion);
the mamlachah (kingdom) shall come to Bat Yerushalayim.
9Now why dost thou cry out aloud?
Is there no melech in thee?
Is thy yo'eitz (counselor) perished?
For pangs have taken thee like a woman in labor.
10Be in pain, and labor to bring forth, O Bat Tziyon,
like a woman in labor;
for now shalt thou go forth out of the city,
and thou shalt dwell in the sadeh,
and thou shalt go even to Babylon;
there shalt thou be rescued;
there Hashem shall redeem thee
from the hand of thine oyvim (enemies).
11Now also Goyim rabbim are gathered against thee,
that say: Let her be profaned and desecrated,
and let our eye gloat over Tziyon.
12But they have no da'as of the machshevot Hashem (thoughts of Hashem),
neither have they binah (understanding) of His etzah (divine plan);
for He shall gather them like the sheaves into the threshing floor.
13Arise and thresh, O Bat Tziyon;
for I will make thine keren (horn) barzel (iron),
and I will make thy hooves bronze;
and thou shalt beat in pieces amim rabbim;
and I will devote unto Hashem as cherem their ill-gotten gains,
and their wealth unto Adon Kol HaAretz.#4:13 T.N. Moshiach is called this in Mal 3:1
14Now gather thyself in troops, O Bat Gedud (Daughter of Troops);#4:14a i.e., warlike Yerushalayim
a matzor (siege) hath been laid against us;
they shall strike the Shofet Yisroel
with a rod upon the cheek.#4:14b See The Besuras HaGeulah According to Mt 27:30
